CHARMING GARDEN SUITE STEPS FROM HISTORIC OLD CHARLOTTETOWN

Charlottetown Apartment Rental Photos and Description

Apartment, 3 Bedrooms, 1.5 Bath, (Sleeps 6)

Located centrally, just steps from the heart of old Charlottetown, our legal luxury triplex is a former traditional centre-hall shingled house (originally built circa 1880) nestled on a professionally designed recently landscaped lot gently shaded by a stately century-old white ash tree.

Lovingly renovated in 2012, our main-floor 'Garden Suite' has a secluded 'get-away-from-it-all' feel that's rare to find in proximity to downtown. Inside, our freshly re-imagined airy and open-concept space features it's own private marble-tiled entrance, private cedar decked garden, three comfortable bedrooms (our comfy and efficient home office easily converts to accommodate 1 or 2 additional persons) with one queen and two full beds, featuring fresh, quality linens) each with it's own access to full bath or water closet. The suite features an L-shaped Great Room with a handsomely furnished dining and living area featuring hand-hewn beams, wide-plank flooring, art work by noted island artists, and a light-filled vaulted ceiling with operable skylight. The fully-fitted and equipped contemporary kitchen has 4 quality stainless steel appliances and a butcher block island. There is a separate laundry/storage room, a two-piece and an indulgent four-piece washroom with rain shower and deep soaking tub.

The property is situated on Upper Hillsborough Street, and is a brief ten-minute walk to Charlottetown Harbour, and the shops and restaurants of Water Street, Peakes Quay, Queen Street and Victoria Row. It's a few blocks to historic Great George Street and Province House, and an easy stroll to the waterfront boardwalk of 100+ acre Victoria Park with it's walking trails, sport fields, tennis courts and outdoor swimming pool. And we can't resist recommending our favorite independent coffee location, Young Folk and the Kettle Black, on Water Street!

Care to read more about the transformation of our century-old island triplex? It's been an adventure! We'll be happy to send you the link to our engaging blog on the matter - send us a quick email!

Guestbook comments from the owner
Having the comforts of home here in PEI were greatly appreciated... from the fluffy comforters to the coffee mugs to the washer and dryer! The location is spectacular, being so central to everything. I'm sure we'll be finding sand in our shoes + suits for months! :-)

We loved the beaches here and thanks for making our welcome so hospitable! We're sad to leave but go with happy hearts and a toddler that will forever be a beach bum! Thanks!

I own Upper Hillsborough with my long-time friend and business associate, Steven. We're both Realtors with Bosley Real Estate Brokerage in Toronto, Ontario. Steven, who operates his urbaneer division, has been with Bosley for many years, and myself, many fewer! We've been fast and fabulous friends since meeting while attending the University of Victoria.

I'm originally from Summerland, British Columbia, having moved to Toronto in 1988 to pursue my education and my career as an orchestral musician. In the time since, I've performed with many of Canada's finest ensembles including the Toronto Symphony, the National Ballet of Canada and the Canadian Opera Company, and played music in places as far flung and varied as Charlottetown, Hong Kong, and Edinburgh.

Since 1999, I've been lucky enough to call Charlottetown home during the summer months thanks to my long involvement as a musician at the Charlottetown Festival.

James Ormston purchased this apartment in 2008

12 Upper Hillsborough at time of purchase in 2008 was a true diamond-in-the-rough: solid, tons of character, and well-situated to Old Charlottetown on a wonderful street shared with many fellow artists and artisans! We fell in love with it's quirkiness, it's history, and it's outstanding potential. The Black House boasts close proximity to all the things nearby that make Charlottetown a truly wonderful place to visit. It's our hope your stay with us will be one of your most memorable!

this is really a great place to stay for my family. awesome design with sweet offerings from owner, my kids even asked not to go out as they love to stay at home instead! we enjoyed very much to have sun bathing at the pretty little garden. 1 of my friends who lived at charottletown coming to visit us at the black house, she said it is definitely a good place to stay for vacation on pei comparing with those hotels. actually we plan to go next year in summer again. wish owner can consider to offer us the discount if possible! haha!
highly recommend!!!!

Owner's Response: James and I are so grateful you and your family enjoyed your stay, especially as you traveled such a great distance from Hong Kong!

One of the consistent - and delightful - comments we receive is how comfortable The Black House is, and how once a family is ensconced in their suite they (including their kids!) are quite delighted to stay in.

Although the suites are different in layout and character, they each have their own personality and patina which invite respite and repose. We consciously designed the property so there are 'zones for living', meaning there are spaces to gather collectively and bond + there are places to curl up alone with your favourite book for a little solitude. I guess it's because - as best friends who share The Black House as our own get-away - James and I are constantly navigating our introverted and extroverted sides. We like having our private spaces yet appreciate gathering with our friends and family.

We're thrilled you enjoyed your stay at The Black House in Charlottetown, PEI!

Sincerely
Steve and James

ENJOYING SUMMER HOLIDAY IN CHARLOTTETOWN

  • 5 of 5
If you stay in Black House, you will feel like back to home. I stayed in Black House for 2 weeks with my family; it's such a wonderful experience. You got everything you need in the house with very good facilities. The house is very nice and my kids enjoyed very much to play outdoor in the private garden. If you want to enjoy a wonderful holiday in Charlottetown, "Black House" is your first and only choice.

Owner's Response: How fantastic that you came from Hong Kong for 2 weeks to explore PEI and your family felt at home in The Black House!

One of our most memorable moments to date at The Black House was hearing your children playing in the garden. Very little compares to the joy in children's laughter. It breathed some new life into our newly renovated house, making it one step closer to embodying the charm of a well-loved Home.

It was a pleasure knowing your family were enjoying themselves leading an everyday life on a summer's day. Thank you for staying at The Black House!

THE BLACK HOUSE WILL NOT DISAPPOINT

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at the Black House for our recent family summer holiday in PEI. The house is absolutely charming and equipped with top of the line appliances and fixtures. The location was perfect and within close walking distance of many of the great restaurants and attractions in Charlottetown. The owners were wonderful to rent from and were available whenever needed and responded to requests promptly. They even had lovely welcome items ready for use upon our arrival specific to our family. Would highly recommend staying here.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words!

James and I take great pride in offering a standard of excellence - plus thoughtful attention to detail - in each of our accommodations.

With The Black House serving as our own 'Home away from Home' throughout the year (we're just a two hour flight from Toronto though James lives in residence during the Summer while playing in the Charlottetown Festival), the property is maintained and presented to a level commiserate to our own levels of comfort and cleanliness. It's also our commitment to our guests.

We're pleased you enjoyed your stay!
Sincerely
Steve and James
