I am Susan Hand. I live in Houston, TX. I love to travel the world and have explored many beautiful places but this area is still my favorite. I come here as often as possible.

Susan Hand purchased this cottage in 2007

I loved this cottage the minute I saw it. The energy in and around the cottage is amazing--very peaceful and nourishing. I bought in as a second home, loved furnishing it and taking care of it. I have wonderful neighbors across the street and next door who also look after it. I love this area. I always go to Westport for the beautiful beach, the winery, lighthouse. I also love Ruby Beach, Lake Quinault, the beautiful Hoh Rain Forest with the Hall of Mosses. I enjoy day trips to Seattle, Olympia, Astoria, Oregon on some trips. An overnight trip to Vancouver Island and Victoria, BC is also a wonderful excursion.

I love spending time relaxing, reading, doing puzzles at the cottage. I also love to explore the many wonderful places nearby.

PERFECT "BASE CAMP"

Perfect "Base Camp"
  • 5 of 5
My husband and I, plus our two little dogs, have stayed at many a VRBO home. This trip we wanted a light, bright, private place to stay in a quiet area for a reasonable price. The plan was to make breakfasts in the mornings, then go on day trips to the coast or Olympic National Forest and Lake Quinault, returning in the evenings to cuddle up for a movie and tea. This home was absolutely perfect for that. Located on a hill in a lovely part of town, every window has tree views. The home has a cheery feel to it, a HUGE bathroom, and a kitchen stocked with everything we needed. We often have issues with heating or a "damp" feeling in this area, but not in this house! Heating system was wonderful and worked quickly and quietly.
We would gladly stay here again.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME

  • 5 of 5
What a wonderful place to stay! In the absence of any decent hotels in Aberdeen, we tried looking on VRBO and so glad we did. This home is open and light with lots of thoughtful amenities, and perched on top of a hill with woods all around. There are premium lines and comforters, as well as high end towels. The kitchen is well stocked with all the things you need, although an outdoor grill would be nice. Susan was wonderful in addressing the small issue that arose after the storm, we even stayed an extra night. Can't wait to return for some fishing this spring and maybe take another trip out to Westport.
Oh, and the Lab was welcome too!

WELL EQUIPED COTTAGE

  • 4 of 5
A very cute home that was well equiped for all our needs.. flashlights, a DVD player, some DVDs, matches, cooking oil, A washer and dryer, beach towels, and anything else a hotel would not able to offer. It would great to be able to stay in a private place, away from the big city and busyness of a hotel. Plus, we could get to Ocean Shores in about 20 minutes.

COTTAGE IN ABERDEEN

  • 5 of 5
This was a wonderful rental. We were four adults and it was perfect for us. Nice quite area, easy to find and travel from. Lots of great information at the house, my husband and I had been in the area before but my cousins were new to that area of the States (From Scotland)
Home was warm and cosy, with everything you could need. washing machine and tumble dryer was great. Kitchen was totally out fitted, slow cooker was really wonderful.
Great places to visit, Lake Quinault Lodge, Hoh national forest, great beaches, Westport Winery great place for lunch or bakery snack. amazing wine to taste. Day trip to Astoria to visit The Columbia Maritime Museum great opportunity to see the history of the Columbia River.

I would recommend leaving info regarding where the grocery stores are as it took us a couple of days to find Safeway. All in all a great place to stay and we would come back.

OUR STAY

  • 5 of 5
The cottage we rented in Aberdeen through VRBO was wonderful! The house was roomy, lovely and homey. Everything we could have wanted was there-laundry facilities, large well stocked kitchen, huge bathroom, very comfortable bedrooms, flat screen tv to watch the Olympics. We watched deer from the kitchen window. The yard was pretty and well kept. We could not have asked for more. The owner was very responsive to any questions we had. We can't wait to stay there next time we are in the area. We recommend Ann Maries in Aberdeen for lunch and the quesadilla (sp?) at Billys Tavern for dinner.

NO CURTAINS WAS DEAL BREAKER FOR US

  • 4 of 5
The only thing that stopped me from giving 5 stars is the lack of curtains in the bedrooms. In the pink bedroom there is one window and it has lace across the top and down the sides, but most of the window is exposed. The other bedroom has two windows. One goes from my knees almost to the ceiling and it has a gauzy curtain that does little during the day and nothing at night with the light on in the bedroom. The second window in that bedroom has nothing. To be fair, the house is mostly surrounded by trees, but I can see the house behind us from the pink bedroom window, including their front porch and living room windows. Unfortunately, we don't live in a perfect world. We live in a world with nosy neighbors, criminals and everything in between and I need privacy in my bedroom. It is not a question I ever thought to ask before renting a vacation house, but I definitely will in the future because this is not acceptable to me.
Other than that, the house has been completely redone on the inside with new flooring, drywall, etc. and is much bigger than the pictures let on. The bathroom and living room are both significantly bigger than I expected from the pictures and I was happily surprised. The kitchen is well stocked with everything from vinegar and garlic to saran wrap. The house is a little quirky with the flooring tilting towards the back of the house, but I found it gave the house personality. Two things I would change (besides curtains in the bedrooms) is to add scissors to the kitchen and give two house keys instead of one.

Owner's Response: Since all bedroom windows are on 2nd story with surrounding areas heavily wooded ravines, we did not anticipate any problems with the window coverage and/or privacy. We did listen to the concerns expressed and replaced the sheer curtains on the larger side window. The small window in this same room is located in the top corner, is shoulder height and after consideration, still does not present any privacy issue. The curtains in the pink bedroom were also replaced to provide more coverage. We also took suggestions about adding scissors to the kitchen and provided two house keys.
