John and Barb Murphy are no strangers to the north. John was actually born in Racine, Wisconsin and grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan in Muskegon, Michigan. Barb was raised in northern Michigan on the east shore of Lake Charlevoix in the small town of Boyne City. Career opportunities led them both to Houston separately, where they eventually met, got married and raised a daughter. After 30 years in the big city, it was time to retire. Having spent the latter 10 years searching for the perfect place, and some 10 states later, they ended up in Bayfield on a whim in the summer of 2009. On the advice of a friend, they scouted an area south of Bayfield County. It was a beautiful place but something was missing. One of the locals there suggested visiting Bayfield; so, they packed for a day trip and headed north. Within the first few minutes of arriving they were definitely “Up North”; they knew this was the place: quaint shops; islands; friendly residents; and, of course, the big water - Lake Superior. It was like coming home. With sights set high, they headed back to Houston, sold their home and moved to Bayfield in August of 2010. Their new home and Carriage House Rental is situated on 10 beautifully wooded acres just one mile north of town.
We are located on 10 wooded acres with a 1/2 mile hike/jog trail that runs along the property with it's own creek. We have wildlife on our property including Black Bear, Bobcat, Deer, Coyote, Wolf, Raccoon, and Fox. Our Carriage house is equipped with all the comforts of home and if you need any special requests, we can have it for you in minutes. You will have a 600 sq ft heated garage where you can store your equipment instead of being one of the many unfortunate visitors that have to keep all their toys on or attached to the vehicles. We are next to the Apostle Islands which is controlled by the National Park Service. You will find Seacaves along the islands and mainland. Kayaking, canoeing and boating is a lifetime experience along the Islands. You can paddle to one of the 21 islands and hike or even camp in areas pristine with nature and solitude. Just keep bear wary!
After experiencing the thousands of acres of nature; walk, ride or drive one mile into town and shop at all the shops or eat at one of many restaurants while looking over Lake Superior and the islands. Want more culture?? Take in a show at the Big Top Chautauqua or at Stage North. You will see famous performers as well as our local artists. Don't forget the Bayfield Apple Festival or the Dog Sled Races or the Bayfield in Bloom or the Fall Harvest Celebration or the Blessing of the Fleet or 'whew!' Just too many things to see and do here in Bayfield. Check out our website for more info and pictures at superiorhorizons.
