Barb is a Certified Personal Trainer and ran her own women’s boot camp class from 2007-2010 in Houston during her spare time.
John is retired from the Houston Police Department where he served for 28 years. He joined the force in 1982 and after 4 years of working Patrol, he joined the SWAT Team and remained with that division until his retirement in 2010. John has worked with Secret Service and other dignitary protection groups serving four presidents and numerous high profile individuals. He has a thorough understanding of one’s privacy and security and strives to ensure it.
Barbara Murphy purchased this cottage in 2010
John and Barb Murphy are no strangers to the north. John was actually born in Racine, Wisconsin and grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan in Muskegon, Michigan. Barb was raised in northern Michigan on the east shore of Lake Charlevoix in the small town of Boyne City. Career opportunities led them both to Houston separately, where they eventually met, got married and raised a daughter. After 30 years in the big city, it was time to retire. Having spent the latter 10 years searching for the perfect place, and some 10 states later, they ended up in Bayfield on a whim in the summer of 2009. On the advice of a friend, they scouted an area south of Bayfield County. It was a beautiful place but something was missing. One of the locals there suggested visiting Bayfield; so, they packed for a day trip and headed north. Within the first few minutes of arriving they were definitely “Up North”; they knew this was the place: quaint shops; islands; friendly residents; and, of course, the big water - Lake Superior. It was like coming home. With sights set high, they headed back to Houston, sold their home and moved to Bayfield in August of 2010. Their new home and Carriage House Rental is situated on 10 beautifully wooded acres just one mile north of town.
We are located on 10 wooded acres with a 1/2 mile hike/jog trail that runs along the property with it's own creek. We have wildlife on our property including Black Bear, Bobcat, Deer, Coyote, Wolf, Raccoon, and Fox. Our Carriage house is equipped with all the comforts of home and if you need any special requests, we can have it for you in minutes. You will have a 600 sq ft heated garage where you can store your equipment instead of being one of the many unfortunate visitors that have to keep all their toys on or attached to the vehicles. We are next to the Apostle Islands which is controlled by the National Park Service. You will find Seacaves along the islands and mainland. Kayaking, canoeing and boating is a lifetime experience along the Islands. You can paddle to one of the 21 islands and hike or even camp in areas pristine with nature and solitude. Just keep bear wary!
After experiencing the thousands of acres of nature; walk, ride or drive one mile into town and shop at all the shops or eat at one of many restaurants while looking over Lake Superior and the islands. Want more culture?? Take in a show at the Big Top Chautauqua or at Stage North. You will see famous performers as well as our local artists. Don't forget the Bayfield Apple Festival or the Dog Sled Races or the Bayfield in Bloom or the Fall Harvest Celebration or the Blessing of the Fleet or 'whew!' Just too many things to see and do here in Bayfield. Check out our website for more info and pictures at superiorhorizons.
The Carriage house is perfect winter get away. Having been to the Apostle islands in the summer i was excited to see the area in the winter. we had a blast Sightseeing, driving the ice road, and Cross country skiing. The house was is very well equipped a with anything you would need. Barbara was very nice and accommodating for a last minute trip. Highly recommended
The Carriage House is even better than the pictures. Clean, well furnished, comfortable with so many added touches. Great video, book selection, excellent information on the area and two hosts that go out of their way to make your stay perfect!! Perfect location, close to so many activities but private and tucked away for quiet & relaxation! We throughly enjoyed everything about our stay and hope to be back!! Thank you!!
Thank you for the excellent accommodations. You both were very helpful with attractions in the area. Everything was so clean. We enjoyed the quiet and beautiful tree colors. We will keep you in mind for our future girls getaway.
The cabin was everything that the web sight claimed it to be. The cabin was fully furnished and very clean. Barbara and John were the perfect hosts. They gave us the space we liked but when we had questions they were more than willing to answer them. We will definitely be back during a warmer time of the year to take John up on the kayaking he described to us. We have a lot more hiking to do and sights to see. The four of us have been celebrating our anniversary's together for many years and have paid a lot more for a lot less! We will be back. Thanks again for a wonderful weekend.
What an amazing experience! Bayfield certainly is a beautiful location. The Carriage House is the perfect spot for a getaway. Barb and John took us on several excursions, including kayaking, biking, and hiking. We are planning on making this an annual trip :)
I don't think I could have found any other accommodations that included a free kayak trip with our personal guide, who made the trip so much fun. He took us right into the sea caves, it was awesome. We also had use of four nice mountain bikes which we drove to the fish hatchery and around Bayfield. The cabin was very clean, well equipped, and had comfortable beds. We had a great time in Bayfield and plan to come back again, but next time we'll bring our boat so we can see all the islands. This trip we only saw Madeline Island by taking the car over by ferry. We recommend having the fish chowder and mussels in cream sauce at the Pub on Madeline Island. Wow, was it good. A lot of good restaurants in Bayfield, as well. Before we left town we picked fresh, organic raspberries. did wine tasting at the Bayfield Winery (and bought several bottles because it was so good), bought fresh white fish and a couple of freshly made pies. A really terrific family vacation.
