House, 7 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 4 Baths, (Sleeps 14)

Accommodations: estate, 7 bedroom, 4 bath, sleeps 14 There is an additional $100 charge per night for any additional guests.

Step back in history, and live like the Heffelfingers did back in the heyday- however it no longer comes with a staff of 10 like in the 20’s! . F. Scott Fitzgerald- born in Minneapolis.. Might have been right at home as well in this park like setting.

If you don't see the dates you are looking for on the calendar I do have another large home 8,000 sq ft- on a golf course in MSP area. Feel free to contact me for more information.

The house has had a recent upgrade in electrical/plumbing systems 3/14.

Situated on one of the most desireable locations/lots on this large 15,000 square acre lake. This historic estate boasts an incredible sweeping view of the lake, 6,000 square feet of living space-above ground, with a market value of $2,000,000. 7 bedrooms, 4 baths, 3 large separate entertaining spaces which can accommodate a good size gathering. Event parties of no more than 30 people are welcome (this is our maximum and only one event during the rental is allowed) We do not accommodate Weddings or other parties that are over this number. During your stay, during the daytime a few additional people are welcome to visit you.

Lake Minnetonka is an incredible fishing lake known for both large and smallmouth bass, northern pike, walleye, Muskie, and pan fish. You can catch your limit right off the dock! Boat rentals in the area are also available.. Pontoons, fishing boats, kayaks, jet skis on up, or bring your own! Public boat launch is right down the street. Our boat dock will accommodate up to a 25” boat, or simply sit on the dock and watch the beautiful classic antique wood boats and sailboats go by. This is an amazing recreational lake as well, swimming and water sports are very popular. Lake Minnetonka also has many, many excellent restaurants available by boat/ or car.

This home boasts 1920's charm with restored interior spaces and a newly remodeled cooks kitchen. Period details abound -original hardwood flooring, original moldings and bones of a well built home. Separate dining room, laundry, 2 car garage, 2 large wood burning fireplaces (initial wood provided), fire pit by the lakeshore with Adirondack chairs, screened gazebo, and private gardens on this 2 acre property all in a beautiful quiet multi million dollar private neighborhood situated on a cul-de-sac… Ahh peace and tranquility, and….. You can bring your favorite furry friend!

We do have a well stocked kitchen for cooking, pots/pans/utensils/flatware/barware, gas grill, charcoal grill, etc. Initial supply of paper towels, trash bags, and bathroom products. Hair dryers and fresh linens provided.

Local attractions within 30-40 minutes:

Mall of America, MSP airport, downtown MSP/ St Paul, Twins, Vikings, and Minnesota Wild hockey venues, Excel Energy Center, Minneapolis Convention Center, cultural events, renown museums and theaters, zoos, etc..

Local attractions: local beautiful towns on the water with excellent shopping for high end designer fashion, or antiques. (Wayzata and Excelsior also have wonderful historical societies-museums that you can visit). University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, Carver Park Reserve! Amazing see website. The Old Log Theater in Excelsior is a ‘must attend” ! 'recognized as one of the most popular theaters in the U.S., the Old Log offers contemporary plays and comedies year-round'

Although it might not be the local attraction you want to see, there is a local wonderful hospital 10-15 minutes away in Waconia if needed.

In the neighborhood: a destination for local Minneapolis residents: the Dakota bike trail, and inline skating trail, the Three Rivers Park -nautical themed play area and a chlorinated sandy bottom swimming pond, boat launch, shopping and groceries a few minutes drive, and a glorious lake to dip your toe in or do a cannonball! You might never want to leave!

It is also easy to book a boat excursion on the lake by vintage steamboat, paddleboat, or upper scale private cruiser or houseboat.

Looking for something to do in the winter? Carver Park Reserve rents x-country ski equipment and has miles and miles of groomed trails, ice fishing, and snowmobiling are some other options.

Information and history of Lake Minnetonka:

The years before the turn of the 20th century were boom years for the lake area. Rail lines reached Wayzata in 1867 bringing visitors from many parts of the country. To accommodate the sightseers, grand Victorian hotels sprung up in every corner of the lake. The Lake Park Hotel on the shores of Tonka Bay, erected in 1879, was one of the finest. A travel guide boasted 'the long luxurious porches with their easy chairs and entrancing views cast a spell over time.' other attractions included tennis, billiards, amateur theatricals, and a first-class orchestra which gave concerts morning and evening.

In a span of twenty five years, lake Minnetonka was transformed from a remote outpost into a fashionable tourist destination. 150 years later, Lake Minnetonka remains a favorite playground for thousands of visitors annually. A number of cruise lines still offer tours of the lake, some even operate restored antique boats. There are dozens of beautifully maintained parks and beaches. Special events, exhibits and festivities of all kinds are held throughout the year.

Highly recommended! 6 adults, 8 kids for family reunion

This home is a unique property with a gorgeous view of a secluded bay on Lake Minnetonka. Older home, well maintained, ample space, private, conveniently located. We rented a boat, kayaks, and paddle boards. Great kitchen, huge living room with beautiful windows. Close to town of Excelsior, easy to get to from airport. Loved it.

Great retreat for groups/families

  • 5 of 5
We used the house as a home base for a wedding in the area and it was fantastic for us. Lots of room, great views and plenty of outdoor space to relax and catch up with family.

We didn't have any unpleasant surprises and the owner and manager were very responsive throughout our process. We would not hesitate recommending the house to any large group looking for a quiet and roomy place to spend a week or weekend.

Fantastic! Heavenly stay for the holidays.

  • 5 of 5
My family had a fabulous time staying at this absolutely wonderful property. It is beautifully positioned with incredible views of the Lake Minnetonka. The house is even more beautiful than the pictures. Even with all the glistening pictures online it was still better than we expected! The entire property is beautifully decorated and had everything we needed to be comfortable. The owner was always very helpful and polite. We couldn't have asked for a better or more professional host. We give Chip and his house our highest of recommendations and wouldn't hesitate at all to rent from him in the future!

Not what we expected

  • 1 of 5
Our stay was disappointing. The place was run down more than what we anticipated and there were things not working correctly or broken. A lot of the furniture was very dirty and the landscaping was mostly weeds. I would not recommend. But the thought of this 1920's estate back in the day must have been something wonderful.

Owner's Response: Oh My Gosh, I am very surprised in a sense to receive this review. The Wedding couple came to the house on two occasions before deciding to rent for a week. The one in particular that I was there for they stayed for over an hour, using their iPad they video recorded every room in the home extensively- including bathrooms and closets “to use as reference”, also taking measurements. I did receive from them before their check-in over eighty (80) emails, not to mention numerous phone calls- this obviously was a red flag! In addition they requested to meet with me two more times. Their reception party of 20-30 (at the time of contract signing) very slowly became 100- information I received from their caterer. The bride continued to tell me there would be closer to 50 and one week before rental still would not give me a total headcount. I called the caterer again and she told me that she was instructed by the renters/her client that she was not to give me any information about amount of guests. We should have canceled the contract immediately at this point. This caused tension and we encouraged them to rent a port a potty, they refused. We rented one, and they refused to use it. This is where the “things not working correctly” comes in. We told them the sewer system could not handle that amount of guests using indoor bathrooms. Fortunately it did! We offered to give them a complete refund to cancel the contract, and they wouldn't accept our offer. In hind site there is no question we should have cancelled the rental, but honestly didn't want to leave them without a place for their wedding.

Great idea...some pitfalls

  • 3 of 5
Stayed here in mid-July with large family. I will start with the good: 1) large, stately home - fit several families with numerous kids easily. Very rare for that attribute. 2) View and location the lake are great. Nearby to boat launch and public park. 3) Updated kitchen with nice appliances, etc. For the opportunities: 1) Air Conditioning is not centralized, which is OK - but could not turn all units on or would blow electrical system....several times had electricians in the house while we were there. This ended up being not a big deal, but could be if weather is unbearably hot. 2) Be aware many of the fixtures outside of the kitchen still are old - which in a way is charming, but in some cases not good. 3) If you plan to be walking up and down to the lake with supplies, you will need to rent a golf cart - we did not fully appreciate the climb - for those that have any sort of trouble walking will not be able to take this hill. On the flip side, it's a great workout. 4) For the amount of money spent on this house, I expected it to be fully updated, where this one seems to be patchworked together over time and does not quite have the WOW factor I would've expected, either with the house itself or with the service before hand.

Overall, we had a good time, and if there were things improved, we would come back, but it was not a consensus to do again next year, which is what we were really looking for (somewhere we could go back)

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. We did have the electrician to the home who did fix the problem while the renter was there. One small section of the house was not working. We were able to work around by bringing in electrical cords until the electrician found the problem the next day. There are air condition units for bedrooms in all but one. If all are running during the day and meanwhile lights, T.V.’s, radios etc, are on- the fuse will blow. When the rooms are not being used we suggest turning off the air, especially during the day. Most of renters do rent a golf cart, or it is a bit of a work out. Thanks for your input.
