FABULOUS CONTEMPORARY RIAD NEAR THE BEACH. 20% OFF STAYS IN SEPT, OCT AND NOV!

Essaouira House Rental Photos and Description

Flexible accommodation - sleeps 2 from £50 per night or 8 from £150 per night.

Dar Lazuli is a 200 year old riad in Essaouira on Morocco's Atlantic Coast. The riad has been renovated to a high standard using contemporary designs, giving it a light, airy and tranquill feel.

This holiday accommodation in Essaouira consists of 4 boutique self-catering apartments which can be rented individually. The riad is also perfect for exclusive use by a family or group of friends, sleeping 8-10 in total.

The apartments have a huge double bed, open fireplace, bathroom with ‘Rainfall’ shower, sitting and dining areas with ipod docking stations and fully equipped kitchens.

The riad is cleaned on a daily basis by Latifa, who can also prepare traditional Moroccan meals for you.

Dar Lazuli takes its social responsibility seriously and we have designed the house in partnership with local artisans, craftsmen and women who have helped build and decorate the property. We’ve commissioned lamps, bed throws, upholstery and more from Souiri locals. We deliberately did not install baths due to the demand on the ancient plumbing system in the medina and the annual droughts in the country. We also subscribe to the Every Drop Counts Campaign and therefore urge guests to use water carefully. Furthermore, a percentage of our profit helps a family of seven in the neighbouring village of Ghazoua, so far focused on supporting the children’s education with six months French tuition and school & sports equipment. We will endeavour to continue and extend this support on behalf of Dar Lazuli’s guests.

Feel free to read the books and play the games that are in the riad, or just ask Rachid if you'd like help with booking a camel trek or other local activities.

Guestbook comments from the owner
Tucked away within the Medina, Dar Lazuli offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of the vibrant, yet relaxed city of Essaouira. A stone’s throw from several fine coffee establishments (café au lait tastes so much better than at home!), fresh seafood vendors, its historic port and the activity-packed beach, Dar Lazuli’s central location is just the start of its many high points!

Ideal for large groups or couples or individuals, the riad comprises three separate apartments accommodating up to 12 people (maybe more?!). So if you’re travelling in a large group, Dar Lazuli is perfect – it has three sun terraces (amazing sun traps in the peak afternoon sun), the middle terrace has a large dining table which is perfect for large feasts, and the very top terrace gives views that stretch to the ocean and over much of Essouira.

Inside the riad, the décor is simple, elegant and full of Moroccan character. Each apartment is equipped with a kitchenette and all the self catering essentials. The beds (ours in ALIZEE apartment) were HUGE – I slept like a baby every night. The bathrooms are a good size and well presented with a shower, and fresh towels are provided daily. The apartments are cleaned daily and very well maintained by housekeepers Latifa and Rashid (both so lovely), so each day we returned to what felt like a brand new apartment! Each apartment has a safe should you wish to lock up any possessions and each night the night guardian arrives so we always felt totally safe and secure at all times.

It was the small touches that made each days return to the blissful haven of Dar Lazuli and our week’s stay in Essouira extra special. So whether it’s the culture, activities (it’s a kite surfers paradise), great restaurants, bars, fresh food or beaches that bring you to Essaouira, Dar Lazuli provides the perfect setting for an enchanting Moroccan adventure! I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

Dar Lazuli was renovated and opened for business in 2007. For about 200 years previously, the property was inhabited by generations of fishing families and our neighbours are still at the heart of this important local industry. We, Rachel and Nicola, are both passionate about responsible and independent travel and wanted to create a cosy base from which guests could freely explore the labyrinthine medina and vast open beaches of Essaouira, safe in the knowledge that they could return to a quiet haven with comfort and relaxation at its core.

Rachel Krish purchased this house in 2006

Amazing, Tranquil Accommodation

  • 5 of 5
Upon arrival we were taken aback by the beautiful design, brightness and general cleanliness of the property. As soon as you enter the cool white-walled Dar you feel a sense of calm. We stayed in the Calima apartment, with a huge walk in shower, comfortable sitting area and second floor just to house the bed we may have never wanted to leave the apartment but as the weather was so amazing and the property is equidistant to the sea and souks we ventured out. The housekeepers were friendly and helpful and Latifa does not leave a spec of dirt or dust when she cleans and even neatly organises the apartment if you leave it in a mess!!! There is a book giving general info on what to do and where to eat in the apartment which we found very helpful and tried most of the restaurants serving a delicious variety of food. Villa Maroc which is next door to Dar Lazuli provides a lovely romantic setting with open fires and low seating and the tagine we ate was exquisite!

Dar Lazuli

My wife and I have just got back from a week in Essaouira and it was fantastic. The riad was amazing. Clean, colorful and welcoming. All the essentials for self catering yet superbly located in the market.

Rooms were cleaned daily with new bed sheets and towels. The pictures really don't do the riad justice.

If you are choosing between Marrakech and Essaouira - then we would have to recommend the later. Marrakech is pushy, crowdy and not as friendly. Essaouira is the complete opposite.

Back to the Riad - we were in Siroco on the first floor but managed to peek at the rest of the riad - the whole place is stunning. I could have spent the week in the riad and not step a foot outside.

Make sure you brush up on your fresh, Rachid - the housekeeper is very helpful but doesn't speak the best of English so you would need to get by in French.

We will definitely be going back.

Mr Mahmud, Surrey.

Dar Lazuli riad is perfectly located just inside Essaouira's medina walls, a couple of minutes walk to the beach, cafes, restaurants & souks.

Essaouira has a temperate climate, so makes a great year round destination, especially for those seeking winter sun.

Listed as one of the world’s best beaches, Essaouira is well-known for watersports including surfing, kite surfing and windsurfing. You can also rent a quad bike & explore the sand dunes, or take a camel or horse trek along the coast.

For the less adventurous, the broad sandy beaches are perfect for long walks & the sea is great for swimming.

Wander the narrow streets & souks in the medina, watch the fishermen bringing in the daily catch at the port, pay a visit to the wood workshops, or simply find a café in the main square – Place Moulay Hassan, & watch the world go by.

The annual Gnaoua or Gnawa World Music Festival in June features a great line up of musicians and artists from all over the world.

Other Activities: Kitesurfing, quad biking, camel riding.

Golf: The Essaouira Mogador Golf Club has recently opened and is a 10 minute drive from Essaouira. It is a 36-hole course stretching over 580 hectares designed by the renowned Gary Player.
