Photos and Description of the Salisbury vacation house rental
House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

A Sweet Haven of Tranquility! Nature Lovers, hear the flow of the River, peek at the Mountain through woodlands in our newly renovated "Vintage Style" Garden Cottage. Nearest neighbors are llamas, sheep, a goat, Organic vegetable farmers, Upscale riding stables, Eagles soaring over the Housatonic River. Close to Twin Lakes, Bartholemew's Cobble Hiking Trails, Private Schools, Lime Rock Park & Berkshires Arts Scene.

You will love "coming home" to your Peaceful Getaway! The comfortable family home is perched on a hill overlooking the Housatonic River and Canaan Mountain. The first thing you will notice is the musical sound of the River! A flight of steps from the driveway brings you to the entrance of the very convenient Mudroom / Pantry before entering the welcoming Open Floor Plan of the home, which makes it the perfect place for gathering and entertaining with Family and Friends.

The recently refreshed Kitchen was designed with several work stations for meal preparation, many pro chefs have worked in this kitchen - you'll enjoy it , too - with plenty of counter space, 2 sinks, dishwasher, new stainless appliances - refrigerator with ice maker, and gas range for those gourmet meals. The island counter seats four and is great for a quick lunch or for guests to sit and snack and keep the cook company. Anything you might need in the kitchen is provided, as well as loads of fun vintage dishes from the owner's collection. The Dining Area is cozy country chic and roomy enough for ten to gather at the Farmhouse style table and Banquette.

Adjacent to the dining area are the French Doors leading to the Screened Porch, which is the hub of activity in the warm summer months, especially evenings! A dining table for six is welcoming with a garden setting better than any restaurant

al fresco dining experience. Several comfy chairs and Grandma's old Porch Glider make this a great extension of the home itself...a restful place to relax with a book on a rainy afternoon! Decorated in a Rustic Style with and authentic hand carved Totem Pole and hanging Adirondack Canoe, you may not want to leave this space at all!!

Out the back door of the Screened Porch, and also accessible out the Kitchen / Mudroom door is a small but efficient porch with the Gas Grill, prep table, planters filled with herbs for your use for summer meal preparation and a garden bench for the chef's assistants!

The Living Room area faces the sunny South Deck, accessible through the 8' sliding doors. The lush and lovely planters and chaise lounge chairs for sun worshipers make this deck feel like an extension of the gardens. It connects with the screened Porch area, making the outside traffic flow work really well and entertaining a Summer Breeze!

Back inside, the family will surely gather around the large Living Room coffee table for fun and games or hors d' oeuvres and cocktails before dinner. If the kids need a place of thier own, the cozy adjoining Family / TV room is the space for them. French doors also connect to the South deck. A small office area in this room is a great bonus if needed, as well as the "catch all" closet.

The warm stucco and barn-sided walls, combined with original paintings by local, and not so local, artists, as well as the owner's extensive collection of vintage pottery, hand sewn pillows and unique decorator touches makes you feel at home, not just in any old rental house!!

The new Tile shower and Pedetal Sink with vintage lights and medicine cabinet in the first floor bath make it comfortable and convenient.

The second floor of the home has an open balcony area overlooking the downstairs, a vaulted ceiling with skylights and a ceiling fan giving a very airy feeling to the house, which is just under 2,000 sq.ft. The Library Wall in the balcony area is filled with good reads, both old and new, and loads of games and puzzles for you to enjoy during your stay.

The Master Bedroom is a haven with it's Queen size bed, luxurious linens, comfy chair and large south east facing picture window to watch the sun and moon rise. There is a TV in the room as well. Two medium sized closets connect to the tiled upstairs bathroom and convenient Laundry Area. The Vintage clawfoot / built-in tub with the European style handheld shower faucet is perfect for a rejuvenating fragrant herbal soak!

The "Kid's Room" is perfect for kids and adults alike, with a fun farmland mural painted on the wall, a good sized closet and two twin beds set up "head to head" for those nights of whispering stories and secrets together. A porta crib is also available if needed.

The Balcony Bedroom is warm and inviting with a super comfortable day bed, which can expand to sleep two, and there is another twin bed as well. A large closet is just across the hall from the bedroom. The French Door leads to the upper "hideaway" balcony with the best view in the house and some great chairs to enjoy it in. If you are a star gazer, this is the place to do it! Many shooting stars have been seen and wished upon from this porch!

Oh, and don't forget the ever present, soothing sound of the River...it will bring peace to your soul!

Hope to hear from you soon!

In addition to two 1st floor decks and the 2nd floor hide away balcony, there is a large screened porch for dining, sitting, even napping if you are lucky! There is also a vine covered cedar Gazebo with a fire pit available for use on the 8 acre property. You will undoubtedly see deer, wild turkeys, racoons and occasionally hear the distant call of coyotes from the 500+ acres of forested Mt Tom between our home and the beautiful Twin Lakes.

Absolutely perfect

Submitted: September 13, 2012 Stayed: July 2012
We stayed for 5 weeks in this house this summer, and loved it. The owners were extremely helpful, and yet not a bit intrusive. They were also completely unphased about my three young kids and large dinner parties. The house is both cozy and open, with a marvelous screened porch where we ate every night, and spent a great deal of our time during the day. The gardens all around the house are beautiful, and full of tufts of flowers and other attractions for the kids' games. A particularly nice detail, and typical of the thoughtfulness of our hosts, we're the fresh flowers placed in various rooms each week. There is also air conditioning in the two main bedrooms, an unusual luxury for the area. The main bedroom has a large window, and from the bed you feel as though you were looking out from a treehouse. The kitchen is fantastic, perfect for big dinners with everyone helping out and chatting, yet the porch, full of candles, is ideal for a romantic dinner. All these comforts, yet the house is completely informal and rural--one really feels one is out in the country, far from it all. And yet convenient: my son and daughter took riding lessons, and my husband and I played tennis at the nearby school's deserted courts, and went for trail runs at beautiful Bartholemew's Cobble, just down the road. (If you make it up the hill, you can look right over into Massachussetts and the edge of the Berkshires.) and let's not forget the farm stand, practically at the end of the driveway, surrounded by beautiful farms and forest. I cannot recommend this rental enough, either for a family or a cozy getaway.

A Charming Getaway in NW Connecticut

We had one major problem with our stay at Sweethaven Farm - we didn't want to leave!

The house was impeccably clean, well maintained, and beautifully decorated - it was clear that it was not a mere "rental house," but rather one that bore the personal imprint and love of its owners. There was plenty of room for entertaining, with an open floor plan that allowed friends to mingle easily... and a fully equipped kitchen complete with two sinks and a professional-caliber gas stove. The surroundings were easy on the eye as well, thanks to excellent landscaping and gardening.

Sweethaven Farm is off the beaten path, in that it's in a location that is restful and quiet - the only noise you'll hear at night is the quiet burbling of the Housatonic River - and yet the attractions of nearby Salisbury, Sharon, Canaan, Great Barrington (MA), and Millerton (NY) are mere minutes away.

I would recommend this property enthusiastically... as long as it doesn't attract so much business that we can't secure a rental next summer. Seriously, it's a delightful little gem, and we look forward to our next visit!

A welcoming house, beautifully linked to its garden site

My husband and I stayed here with our two daughters, their husbands, and our 15-month-old granddaughter as part of a family reunion. This delightful house served as a perfect gathering spot. The clean, well-stocked kitchen had two sinks and all the equipment we needed to host a big party. The open plan meant that cooks could still be part of the conversation. The screened porch, with its glider and cushioned chairs, was a particular favorite, and we made good use of the lounge chairs on the deck and balcony, too.

Noreen's gardens are gorgeous--not surprising, since landscaping is her business. We were invited to browse her extensive library of gardening books upstairs. We spent a lot of time outdoors, where peonies and iris bloomed among lush hostas and ferns. Our little one was especially enchanted by the small lily pond with its resident frogs. The house itself is full of charming details--shells, pottery collections, and art obviously gathered over many years. It has the feeling of a well-loved home, not a rental at all.

Our hosts, who live and work at the rear of the property, were graciously attentive to our needs, providing a high chair and portacrib for our toddler and offering to drive my father (who recently turned 88) across the lawn to an upper entry for the party, so he wouldn't have to climb the stairs from the driveway. The master bedroom and living room had air conditioners already, but when the weather turned unseasonably warm for Memorial Day, Noreen and Don purchased additional units for the smaller bedrooms as well. Having a full-size washer and dryer was a boon with a baby in the house.

Because it was early in the summer and we were busy with family, we didn't take advantage of the many cultural options in the surrounding Berkshires. But having spent many past summers near here, I can say that you won't lack for music, dance, theater, historic-site, or recreational opportunities if you visit. Tourism information was available in the cosy study/TV room that adjoins the living room. We can recommend the farmstand just down the road for eggs and organic produce.

A final note: If you are bringing small children or have physical limitations, be aware that there are two significant staircases to negotiate: a wide stone and wood one of about 25 steps up from the drive, and a winding, steeper stair to the bedrooms. We brought a baby gate with us to close off the latter.

In sum, we highly recommend this Sweet Haven of Tranquility!
