OPERA HOUSE Andrássy út; 'The House of Terror':
OPERA HOUSE (Opera) Andrássy út (The Opera is immediately beside the apartment building)
The Hungarian National Opera was built in 1884 in an Italian Renaissance style and is located next to the building in which our apartment is situated. Guided tours take visitors around this remarkable building with its gilt and marble decoration and the lavish and intricate frescos.
House of Terror: At 60 Andrássy Ut is a controversial but very popular museum called the House of Terror. The museum is the former headquarters of the secret police of the former Nazi and Communist governments and illustrates the grim decades of Nazi and Communist rule. The House of Terror is open (we think!) Tuesday-Friday, 10:00 to 18:00, Sat-Sun 10:00-19:30, closed Monday.
Museum of Fine Arts (XIV)., Heroes Square:
Museum of Fine Arts (XIV., Heroes Square)
The building borders the square from the left. It was finished in 1906 and displays a foreign art collection — including a modern section. The Spanish collection is quite significant and strong, especially El Greco’s paintings are often referred to in this context. The Flemish and Dutch material and the print collection are also significant. The museum is open until 10 p.m. on Thursdays. Its renovation has been constantly ongoing since the second world war. There is an interesting art books shop also. The area is also an enjoyable place for walking and also contains an area used for pop festivals, ice skating in winter as well as a place for festivals and exhibitions. Many of the city bus tours start on Andrássy Avenue and give a useful insight into the many large houses along the route.
