About Carmela Blackman

We live in the UK with our two daughters. We fell in love with Le Cottage from the moment we walked up the gated drive. After purchasing in 2003 it then took us a further 5 years to renovate including the addition of a pool which overlooks a magnificent view down a conservation valley of pine trees. We wanted to create somewhere really special to go, full of beautiful things. Each time we arrive we all still feel excited and have had some wonderful times with family and friends. We now have regular guests who revisit each year and they also feel like its their home from home.

Carmela Blackman purchased this villa in 2003

Why Carmela Blackman chose St-Paul-de-Vence

We love the area with its diversity from historic towns, beautiful walled villages, mountains and having the sea close by. Also the way of life, food, wine and of course the sunshine. It has great access to the airport 15 mins, trains 10 mins, motorway 7 mins. Its close to Nice, Cannes, Antibes and only 40 mins to Monaco. It has great links to pretty much anywhere along the coast or inland. The area is so diverse being close to beaches, mountains, river walks and all amenities whether you want to play golf, tennis or visit one of the beautiful hill top villages like St Paul only a 5 minute drive away. There is so much to do and never enough time. Although it is close for accessibility it is tucked away for when you want to enjoy some relaxing time out with magnificent views.

What makes this villa unique

Le Cottage du Loup is on the edge of the beautiful historic village of La Colle Sur Loup. You have all you need in the village Bakery, butchers, Grocers, Cafes, restaurants, banks, chemist and an open market on Saturday mornings. Many of our guests intend on visiting so many places but say once they arrive they stock up on food and wine and spend most of their days by the pool, cooling alfresco on the range BBQ. Or go for a stroll down to the River Loup which is a lovely tree lined walk where you can also rock climb.

La Colle Sur Loup is a short 10 minute drive from St Paul de Vence which is one of the most visited and oldest medieval towns on the French Riviera and the second most visited in France, it is well known for its modern and contemporary art museums and galleries such as Fondation Maeght which is located nearby.

Saint-Paul de Vence has long been a haven of the famous. During the 1960s, it was frequented by French actors Yves Montand, Simone Signoret and Lino Ventura, and poet Jacques Prévert.

We have a wonderful team who look after our guests. Our House manager who speaks several languages including English is on hand should you need advice for restaurants or information on the local area. Our gardener, pool guy and house keeper keep everything ship shape. When you rent our property you will know that if anything unexpected goes wrong, our support team will be there to fix it as soon as possible. Please read some of our previous guest reviews.

Just perfect.

We had a fantastic week, the location was perfect. The Cottage Du Loup within its own grounds provided the ideal place for unwinding. The villa has excellent facilities and  a high standard of decor and furnishings in a French provencal style. The owners have thought of everything providing reading material, games, TV, iPod doc, and CD player but if relaxing around the pool is your guilty pleasure it was a joy as there are ample sun loungers and parasols on the sun kissed south facing terrace with amazing un interrupted views. The pool stretches out giving the illusion of infinity into the surrounding mountains.

The Cottage is ideally situated close to St Paul de Vence, Nice, Antibes and many beaches. It provided the perfect venue for our varied interests.

It is worth making the 5 minute walk down to the river Loup. La Colle sur Loup is a pretty village with good restaurants and amenities just 10 mins walk. Don't neglect the old town of Vence, which has numerous restaurants, is charming, calm and cool (in temperature). It has a good art museum. Art lovers should also definitely not miss the Fondation Maeght gallery on the edge of St Paul. The beaches at Cagnes are better than those at Nice (and closer).

Carmela, Michelle our welcome lady, and Maria the house maid all made us feel very welcome. We would certainly recommend Le Cottage to anyone looking for a quality property in this fascinating area.

Overall we had a fantastic time made even better by staying in this gem of a property and would highly recommend it to our friends and relatives.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review. We strive behind the scenes to make Le Cottage a special place to make your stay as pleasurable as possible so that you leave with wonderful memories. We are adding and improving things all the time. We have a great team who are on hand at the villa if needed. Its good to know they do a really good job. Le Cottage is a great touring base there just never seems to be enough time in one visit. There is also the facility close by for those who love to play tennis and golf with endless beaches easily reached. Visitors come from all over the world especially to visit the art gallery Fondation Maeght just on the edge of the walled village of St Paul close by. For Foodies there are lots of restaurants Or for many of our guests they just want to relax and sit by the pool overlooking the views. We look forward to seeing you again soon

A beautiful, spacious villa in the foothills

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Carmella's lovely villa in the stunning foothills midway between Nice and Antibes. After a lot of research we chose this house to celebrate Mike's 60th birthday with four friends. We were delighted on arrival to find it exactly as displayed on the website and a warm greeting by two lovely ladies, Michelle and Maria. Each of the three couples had plenty of privacy with their own bedroom and bathroom. The outside terrace and pool was perfect for relaxing and dining after a long day touring and was a joy to return to each day. We loved St Paul de Vence, Vence and the local village La Colle Sur Loup with its friendly and interesting people. We visited Nice, Antibes, Cannes, St Tropez and Monaco. We sometimes found our car too large for some multi-storey car parks and small bridges so took the train from Cagnes Sur Mer or bus from the village on some trips. A drive into the Alps to Enrevaux was only one hour and well worth it, especially getting caught in a thunderstorm while there! We saw so much in just one week. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this villa to others who wish to see the French Riviera. We wish we were right back there now! Thanks again Carmella, your home is beautiful and it was a holiday we will always remember! Denise and Mike Jones, Adelaide, South Australia.

This was one of the most beautiful villas we had ever stayed in - so homely and comfortable in a beautiful area. A very warm welcome, very clean and the kids loved the pool and all local the Amenities. Location and views were fantastic. We hired a car and were within short driving distance of Monaco, Cannes etc . The local village of colle sur loup was so quaint, restaurants and deli very accommodating and welcoming - cobbled steets - lovely walking areas - a definite recommendation. Thank you Carmela!! Thank you Carmela! What a fantastic holiday in a fantastic villa. We would not hesitate from booking with you again. Conveniently located, just a short distance from Nice, Cagnes Sur Mer, Antibes and St Paul de Vence, yet in a very quiet, secluded location. It's really does offer the best of both worlds. The luxury fit and finish of the villa, the wonderful pool and terrace meant somedays we were reluctant to leave and just popped into La Colle Sur Loup for essential supplies! Wine, cheese, bread.......... We shall continue to recommend Le Cottage du Loup to everyone!

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your review. Its great to have feedback and also to know that the team who look after our guests and Le Cottage du Loup are doing a good job. Its also a pleasure to have lovely guests stay. We add things and update the villa every year. We know from our own experiences as a family how important holidays are so we try to make Le Cottage a home from home. Its that excitement you feel as you arrive and the feeling that you made the right choice that's important to us, its the little things that count. The villa is in a great location, whether you just want to chill by the pool, have long lazy lunches on the terrace over looking the conservation area which we always find hard to leave, or visiting the many beautiful places nearby, there is never enough time. We very much look forward to welcoming you on your next holiday.

Fantastic Holiday

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for two weeks with two different couples. The villa couldn't be more perfect. The fact that everything you could want in a vacation let is here and more. Surprisingly, the two things that we found most helpful was the great wifi and the 2 washing machines. It is beautifully outfitted with all you could ask for. The outside eating area and the pool made eating outside mandatory! The doors and windows open out to bring all of that beauty inside as well. The location is another bright spot. 30 minutes from Nice, 10 minutes from St Paul de Vance and easy access to wonderful mountain towns. You must have a car but it's easily done to and from the Nice airport. Shopping is close and convenient. The cleaning staff was great and she has a little grocery in the basement for quick needs of all things Italian. The check in and out was very easy and efficient. All in all, a place we would return again and again

A dream come true

  • 5 of 5

I have always wanted to immerse myself into French lifestyle and spent many hours researching villas. I had wanted to rent in Villefrance sur Ner or Beaulieu but the prices for a two month rental were much more than I wanted to spend. I decided to look west of Nice and after talking with the owners of several villas we decided on Le Cottage. It was exactly as described and the pictures were very accurate. The only picture not as represented was the dining room which is actually much better tan shown as it now has a lovely antique round table with beautiful Provençal chairs for 6.

We loved being away from the traffic of Nice and enjoyed the small villages and hilltop towns in the area. Our favorite was Gourdon. Having spent many vacations in Villefranche, it was wonderful to explore the villages that are off the tourist route. We loved the La Colle sur Loup and the small family restaurants there. We enjoyed shopping at the small grocery stores, the boulangerie, Poulet a GoGo in Cagnes. We loved cooking at home and eating by the pool..

The only thing we missed was not having a local phone line as using our cell phones from the US even with our international service was expensive. I would recommend you buy a local phone if you are here for several weeks.

We had a few maintenance issues like no AC in the downstairs apt., but they did get a portable unit that helped. The only problem was you had to leave the window open to vent it and the mosquitoes were a problem. Luckily after the first two weeks we didn't need air at night. The outside motion light for the barbecue did not work and they were not able to get it to work so this was a problem when we wanted to use the grill as the days got shorter. All other problems were addressed in a timely manner. These were very minor, lights that were burned out etc.

Overall, the house is very comfortable, lots of private spaces, housekeeping is very good and location is great. With the gates you feel very secure.

We loved our stay and really hated to leave early due to a death in the family. Carmela's advice to take trip insurance is spot on ad you never know what could happen. We always do this and for the first time we needed it. Luckily we only missed a week of our stay. We look forward to returning in the near future.

Thank you again Carmela for all your assistance and Michele for coming so early to check us out so we could make an early flight home. We are happy to recommend your home.

Owner's Response: It is a pleasure to have such lovely guests and we are so sorry for your loss. Its good to hear you had an enjoyable stay and we look forward to welcoming you again in the future. It seems no matter how many times we visit there is always so much to see and do. So many beautiful places to visit. We are always looking for new additions and updating items in the villa to make our guests stay more enjoyable and I will get some new pictures of the dining furniture. We had been awaiting and chasing parts for the air conditioning unit from the maintenance company for some weeks as the parts had to come from Italy so it was out of our hands. However the unit has been repaired and is in good working order now. The light is being replaced over the BBQ area, Thank you again for your recommendation. Our Best Wishes to the family Carmela
