About Tori and Wade

Tori has extensive backgrounds in the travel industry, education, home design, and Humane Society management that has helped prepare for providing our guests, and their beloved pets with memorable experiences that we hope will warm your heart. We want our guests to feel as if they are staying in a well-appointed historic holiday home of a good friend. Wade is a database administrator who's life is officially over from his view, without reliable/hi-speed wifi ;-) . He also has a handy talent for historic restoration.

Tori and Wade purchased this house in 2007

Why Tori and Wade chose Brinnon

We chose this property after nearly a decade long search for a historic waterfront home, with placement near old growth forest where considerable wildlife abounds, preferably on Hood Canal. Good restaurants and top notch shellfish were a must. Our long wait was well rewarded. We hope you'll adore this photographer's playground as much as we do.

What makes this house unique

The only authenticated, historic, waterfront holiday rental on Puget Sound fronting the crystal clear waters of Hood Canal on the widest expanse of the longest fjord in North America. Some of the most hypnotic and romantic moonlit views you may ever encounter. Constantly evolving views that include Mt Rainier + periodic Trident subs to observe, with shellfish and shell laden beach. A unique and romantic piece of history in nature's paradise.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My husband found this wonderful historic home on the internet and we knew immediately we had to give it a try. It was wonderful! Terrific views from every room, cozy beds, well stocked kitchen, phenomenal panoramic spa tub in the master, and lots of hot cocoa. My husband, mother-in-law, children and I enjoyed drinking hot cocoa watching amazing, WARM sunrises in Feb! Wonderful memories were made and will never be forgotten!

Unplug and relax!

  • 5 of 5

Looking for your “typical” vacation rental on the Hood Canal, the Historic Balch Retreat is not it.

If you want to feel as though your best friends have lent you their personal water front residence, complete with warm furnishings, antiques, a well-equipped kitchen, and comfortable beds, then you have come to the right place.

From the moment you step through the front door you feel as though you have stepped back in time to the days when life on the Hood Canal was simpler and more relaxed. The charm of this 1920’s waterfront home is carried throughout in even the smallest of details.

This home is all about relaxation and detaching yourself from the stress of everyday life. Unplug and curl up with a good book. Marvel at the abundance of wildlife right outside your back door. Seals, sea lions, Eagles, and varieties of sea birds too numerous to list. Even the occasional raccoon family scampering through the yard.

To get more up close & personal with nature, hop in the canoe and take a leisurely trip along the banks. If you're lucky you will have plenty of curious seals to escort you. After canoeing, take a walk along the banks and look for shells. Don’t forget your camera!

After sunset, light a fire in the fire pit and make s’mores. Your kids will remember this far longer than what was on the TV that night.

A few recommendations to make your stay a memorable experience.

• Take your groceries. The local store is not well stocked. It is okay if you run out of milk, but beyond that, the nearest store is 23 miles away.

• This is the Pacific Northwest. If you want sandy beaches, go to California.

• Despite what yo may think, the owners cannot arrange for elk or deer, or other wild animals to parade past your door as you eat your breakfast. They are wild and come and go as they please.

• While the house does sleep 9, 6 might be more comfortable. The dining table seats 6. The living room also seats 6, comfortably, with possibly room for two more for short periods. Don't overcrowd the place, especially in the winter months, too many people could impact your relaxation time.

We actually had the pleasure of meeting Tori & Wade and we can tell you that you won't meet two nicer people who truly care about their guests.

In nearly every way the Historic Balch Retreat exceeded our expectations.

Do not pass up the Historic Balch Retreat. Just please save us a long weekend here and there. We will return.

Just lovely...

  • 5 of 5

Took my parents and brother (from Alaska) and son and husband to Hood Canal for an extended weekend in the area I suddenly love so much. We saw tons of otters (sooo cute) as well as sea lions and eagles and tons of hummingbirds and even a submarine, all from our balconies or walking on the beach. The house is just beautiful, and amazingly well stocked (we have rented houses all over the country and Caribbean through VRBO, and this was the most thoughtfully accommodated of all of them). Owner was amazingly responsive and thorough and helpful. We had a lovely, long weekend there, and it was perfect.

Amazingly cozy and peaceful home

  • 5 of 5

This home and location is no joke. Comfortable, everything you'll need, and 2 decks + a fire pit. View bald eagles, elk, seals. Hummingbird feeder amazing. Sunsets and sunrises with changing colors over Rainier. Located nearby excellent hikes, good kayak rentals at nearby marina. If you haven't yet stayed at the Hood Canal, go. Now.

Away from the city

  • 5 of 5

My mom and I stayed together for Mother's Day weekend, and loved it. We had fun cooking, reading, sight seeing (from our balcony), walking nature trails, and RELAXING! Tori with the retreat has been wonderful, she was caring and polite and professional, and we are planning to vacation here again. My only gripe (and this may say a lot about why I need vacations) was about the variety of TV channels. The cable didn't seem to come in too strong so we were limited. We probably wouldn't have watched any TV, however, we stayed on a rainy weekend. Soaking in the tub overlooking the canal made up for it!!! Just be prepared and bring DVDs that you like. They have a ton of magazines at the house that we had so much fun browsing through.

Owner's Response: Balcony time for "sightseeing" from the covered balcony rain or shine is a guest favorite (ours too!). This historic paradise is most definitely about the views, and wildlife observation (our own little Animal Planet). When you first enter the driveway to discover sweeping views of the Hood Canal we hope you can fully "relax", and let your cares drift away with the tide. So glad to hear you discovered an even better alternative experiencing the panoramic view jetted spa that some guests call a destination within itself, after searching the over 40 TV channels. We hope you will think of us when in need of a getaway, and am so pleased you made a cherished Mother's Day memory. Warmly, Tori and Wade

Magical winter getaway

  • 5 of 5

We spent two wonderful nights here and can't wait to come back. Awakening in the master suite to the winter sunrise across the canal was splendid. The home is well appointed and I felt like an invited guest. Everything was top quality and we never felt like we were getting the "rental equipment" while the good stuff was packed away. Sharp kitchen knives, a whole array of spices for cooking, comfy linens and abundant cookware, dishes and glassware. We were able to collect fresh oysters at low tide and enjoyed the many books and games on site. It was a very peaceful setting for us (2 parents and 3 teenagers and our dog). I especially appreciated the check-ins from Tori (by email) during our stay and the free wifi was a plus. Highly recommend this magical spot.

Owner's Response: It's nice to see guests noticing the quality touches that can be hard to find with every day vacation rentals, such as a yesteryear feather stuffed sofa, original leaded glass windows, hardware, and fixtures, plus many other quality and historic touches that add charm and ambiance. We definitely want those that stay to feel like a guest using a friends vacation home. Thanks for sharing! Sincerely, Tori and Wade

A gorgeous getaway on Hood Canal!

  • 5 of 5

This house is beautiful, comfortable and perfect for a group getaway. It's right on the water, with a balcony and deck that are ideal for sipping coffee in the sun and listening to the sea birds. The entire place was immaculate, and the kitchen had everything we needed to make a delicious dinner. The dining table was also great for after-dinner games! We stayed in the master suite, and the bed was really comfy. Waking up to the sun rising over the Hood Canal was amazing - we'll definitely be back!

Owner's Response: Always a definite pleasure to see our guests discover the many wonders of The Historic Balch Retreat in nature's paradise, as we have. Morning tea/coffee while basking in the sun on the covered balcony, and taking in the wonder of the wildlife is certainly our version of heaven. Very sweet of you to let others know the treasured memories you have experienced, and the care taken to achieve this. Most Warmly, Tori
