STEP BACK IN TIME to many original 1920 features while observing wildlife the way they were meant to be viewed...in the wild. Old growth forest with numerous, impressive cascading waterfalls are close by.

BALCONY TIME - a guest favorite that offers a panoramic, built in covered balcony with day and night (moonlight on the water), rain or shine views. Relax and observe the wildlife and gorgeous views on the old fashioned rocking glider, or zero gravity recliners while staying toasty warm by the patio heater in cooler months or late evenings. When hummingbirds compete for the balcony feeder it can be quite a show!

NEAR WORLD RENOWNED OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK and Forest (closest side to Seattle/Tacoma 1.5 hrs). Old growth forest with beautiful, cascading waterfalls that are tremendous fun to climb in and around, in addition to amazing picturesque hiking trails. Panoramic, forever views of downtown Seattle, Mt Rainier, Mt. Baker, the Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges + most of Puget Sound, all in close proximity. Fun and pet friendly Dosewallips State Park, with historic logging train trail is a mere 3 min walk.

THIS QUAINT NANTUCKET WATERFRONT CHARMER was constructed by T.B. Balch in 1920, one of the original founders of Brinnon. Located on the Dosewallips Wildlife Estuary, a MAJOR WILDLIFE DRAW and feeding ground. It is the best way to observe nature including the prized Roosevelt 'Brinnon Elk' herd that sometimes visit the yard, or beach. Bald and huge golden eagles with amazing wing spans sometimes fly within 30 ft at eye level is truly something to behold, along with numerous bird varieties that are both beautiful and interesting to observe. Seal lions are sometimes quite playful, and you may even see some adorable seal lion pups. Cute river otters and beavers frequent our beach in addition to orcas on occasion.

SUBMARINES AND MORE...Also unique to The Historic Balch Retreat is the interesting Trident Navy sub's that practice next to the Estuary ''shelf'' in the middle of Hood Canal. One of few places to view this unusual and interesting sight right from the interior or exterior of the home!

CANOEING, SWIMMING, SCUBA, BOATING, AND SIGHTSEEING...Provided canoe takes you even closer to wildlife, and fun exploration. If additional watercraft are required kayak rentals, diving charters, and boat launch available at Pleasant Harbor Marina, less than 2 minutes away. Cool off in the waters and play (yes, play!) in the crystal clear waters of Hood Canal. The Retreat is the perfect place to begin any of the Olympic Birding, Culinary, or Scenic Loops, or combine all 3! Indulge in wine tasting, casino's, exceptional Olympic Mtn Ice Cream, and sampling at unique distilleries. Visit quaint, historic seaports, some with gorgeous Victorians. Great day trips for Twilight fans, Hurricane Ridge, Whale charters (in season), or ferry over to Victoria B.C. Pure relaxation is also a desirable option allowing you to revel in the soothing effects of your historic Hood Canal paradise. There is something for everyone. The list is virtually endless....

ROMANCE ABOUNDS...Intimate and popular with couples and honeymooners. Indulge with a romantic toasty fire (cooler months), a relaxing indoor PANORAMIC view jetted spa (the moonlight on the water is truly inspiring), with candlelit ambiance. Expansive master suite, with luxury pillow top king bed. Reconnect on the unique cushioned leather double rocking chair indoors, or yesteryear rocking glider on the view balcony. Celebrate each other with so many appealing things to do together, or revel in total relaxation.

THE LITTLE EXTRAS... Natural and luxury soaps, body wash, shampoos, and lotions, accompanied by high powered zoom binoculars that bring wildlife and Trident sub activity up close are also supplied. Clam rake, buckets, oyster knives, rubber boots/waders, and oyster gloves are ready to help you prepare your fresh from the water feast. So many amenities from beautiful stemware numerous spices to built in magnifying mirrors in bathrooms, and romantic atmosphere by candlelight. There is even a picnic table for guest use on the beach. We have attempted to provide items that will delightfully enhance your step back in time including provided canoe, and large bonfire ring with built in seating near the moonlit waters edge. Pick fabulous, plump, sweet blackberries on site mid to late summer for pie and cobbler perfection, or enticing snack.

PREFER NOT TO COOK? Esquire magazine's #2 choice for 'Best Bar in America' is just a three minute walk at the Geoduck Restaurant. Additionally, The Half Way House Restaurant/Bakery a couple of minutes away with legendary pies/desserts, and 2 for 1 steak night on Friday's! Pizza anyone?? Pleasant Harbor Marina makes a mouth watering pizza, along with hot sandwiches, salads, and homemade apple crisp with fresh Grannie Smith apples ala mode. Restaurants in Brinnon are reasonably priced, convenient, highly rated on TripAdvisor, and absolutely delicious!!

RAIN SHADOW positioning outside of the many convergence zones on Hood Canal can provide more favorable weather in many cases.

SENIORS AND THOSE WITH LIMITED MOBILITY. Our retreat is user friendly. A mere 3 steps down from the parking area, and 1 step up to the country covered front porch when staying on the well equipped main level. The charming ''blue room'' bedroom with covered view balcony entrance provides functioning with ease. Unplug and relax!

  • 5 of 5
Looking for your “typical” vacation rental on the Hood Canal, the Historic Balch Retreat is not it.

If you want to feel as though your best friends have lent you their personal water front residence, complete with warm furnishings, antiques, a well-equipped kitchen, and comfortable beds, then you have come to the right place.

From the moment you step through the front door you feel as though you have stepped back in time to the days when life on the Hood Canal was simpler and more relaxed. The charm of this 1920’s waterfront home is carried throughout in even the smallest of details.

This home is all about relaxation and detaching yourself from the stress of everyday life. Unplug and curl up with a good book. Marvel at the abundance of wildlife right outside your back door. Seals, sea lions, Eagles, and varieties of sea birds too numerous to list. Even the occasional raccoon family scampering through the yard.

To get more up close & personal with nature, hop in the canoe and take a leisurely trip along the banks. If you're lucky you will have plenty of curious seals to escort you. After canoeing, take a walk along the banks and look for shells. Don’t forget your camera!

After sunset, light a fire in the fire pit and make s’mores. Your kids will remember this far longer than what was on the TV that night.

A few recommendations to make your stay a memorable experience.
• Take your groceries. The local store is not well stocked. It is okay if you run out of milk, but beyond that, the nearest store is 23 miles away.
• This is the Pacific Northwest. If you want sandy beaches, go to California.
• Despite what yo may think, the owners cannot arrange for elk or deer, or other wild animals to parade past your door as you eat your breakfast. They are wild and come and go as they please.
• While the house does sleep 9, 6 might be more comfortable. The dining table seats 6. The living room also seats 6, comfortably, with possibly room for two more for short periods. Don't overcrowd the place, especially in the winter months, too many people could impact your relaxation time.

We actually had the pleasure of meeting Tori & Wade and we can tell you that you won't meet two nicer people who truly care about their guests.

In nearly every way the Historic Balch Retreat exceeded our expectations.

Do not pass up the Historic Balch Retreat. Just please save us a long weekend here and there. We will return.

Amazingly cozy and peaceful home

  • 5 of 5
This home and location is no joke. Comfortable, everything you'll need, and 2 decks + a fire pit. View bald eagles, elk, seals. Hummingbird feeder amazing. Sunsets and sunrises with changing colors over Rainier. Located nearby excellent hikes, good kayak rentals at nearby marina. If you haven't yet stayed at the Hood Canal, go. Now.

Away from the city

  • 5 of 5
My mom and I stayed together for Mother's Day weekend, and loved it. We had fun cooking, reading, sight seeing (from our balcony), walking nature trails, and RELAXING! Tori with the retreat has been wonderful, she was caring and polite and professional, and we are planning to vacation here again. My only gripe (and this may say a lot about why I need vacations) was about the variety of TV channels. The cable didn't seem to come in too strong so we were limited. We probably wouldn't have watched any TV, however, we stayed on a rainy weekend. Soaking in the tub overlooking the canal made up for it!!! Just be prepared and bring DVDs that you like. They have a ton of magazines at the house that we had so much fun browsing through.

Owner's Response: Balcony time for "sightseeing" from the covered balcony rain or shine is a guest favorite (ours too!). This historic paradise is most definitely about the views, and wildlife observation (our own little Animal Planet). When you first enter the driveway to discover sweeping views of the Hood Canal we hope you can fully "relax", and let your cares drift away with the tide. So glad to hear you discovered an even better alternative experiencing the panoramic view jetted spa that some guests call a destination within itself, after searching the over 40 TV channels. We hope you will think of us when in need of a getaway, and am so pleased you made a cherished Mother's Day memory. Warmly, Tori and Wade

Magical winter getaway

  • 5 of 5
We spent two wonderful nights here and can't wait to come back. Awakening in the master suite to the winter sunrise across the canal was splendid. The home is well appointed and I felt like an invited guest. Everything was top quality and we never felt like we were getting the "rental equipment" while the good stuff was packed away. Sharp kitchen knives, a whole array of spices for cooking, comfy linens and abundant cookware, dishes and glassware. We were able to collect fresh oysters at low tide and enjoyed the many books and games on site. It was a very peaceful setting for us (2 parents and 3 teenagers and our dog). I especially appreciated the check-ins from Tori (by email) during our stay and the free wifi was a plus. Highly recommend this magical spot.

Owner's Response: It's nice to see guests noticing the quality touches that can be hard to find with every day vacation rentals, such as a yesteryear feather stuffed sofa, original leaded glass windows, hardware, and fixtures, plus many other quality and historic touches that add charm and ambiance. We definitely want those that stay to feel like a guest using a friends vacation home. Thanks for sharing! Sincerely, Tori and Wade

A gorgeous getaway on Hood Canal!

  • 5 of 5
This house is beautiful, comfortable and perfect for a group getaway. It's right on the water, with a balcony and deck that are ideal for sipping coffee in the sun and listening to the sea birds. The entire place was immaculate, and the kitchen had everything we needed to make a delicious dinner. The dining table was also great for after-dinner games! We stayed in the master suite, and the bed was really comfy. Waking up to the sun rising over the Hood Canal was amazing - we'll definitely be back!

Owner's Response: Always a definite pleasure to see our guests discover the many wonders of The Historic Balch Retreat in nature's paradise, as we have. Morning tea/coffee while basking in the sun on the covered balcony, and taking in the wonder of the wildlife is certainly our version of heaven. Very sweet of you to let others know the treasured memories you have experienced, and the care taken to achieve this. Most Warmly, Tori

Dreams realized

  • 5 of 5
Having been in the hospitality business, it can be a curse or a blessing when putting on the 'tourist' cap. As with any experience, we look (without meaning to) for the finer things to be wrong (dust missed, toilets not totally cleaned, etc). I can tell you without hesitation that this was a stellar wkend from start to finish. All that is described in the houses description was spot on. The house was wonderful, and fully appointed to the extent where much of what I packed was unnecessary. The house was pristine, and our wkend was one that will remain in my memory as the gold standard. Tori (the owner) was a dream to work with-it was obvious that her highest priority was fulfilling our every needs. The best compliment I can make (and I was hard put to narrow it to one highlight), is that we didn't want to leave, and are already looking at our calendars for a return visit. So please, do yourselves a favor and visit this lovely home. You won't be disappointed. We loved not only the house, but the kindness and caring that Tori put into assuring that ours was an unforgettable experience."

Owner's Response: Thank you for pointing out aspects that travelers hold dear to their hearts, such as the low allergen environment/cleanliness factor, and providing the little extra's that you don't normally find in most vacation rentals. When guests are so terrific, one can't help but want to do everything possible to ensure a treasured experience. Your review was too kind. We hope to see you again soon! Tori and Wade Cole
