My husband of 25 years, and I purchased this home so we could enjoy occasional city living, and to be closer to our Seattle friends. Our home has been recently remodeled, and is very comfortable. When we spend our time in the city, we enjoy a daily walk at Lincoln Beach, a walk to Starbucks in the morning for a latte, and although I love to cook, we do enjoy an occasional walk to California S reet ( just blocks away) for a pizza at Zeeks, a cocktail at Feedback Lounge, or some pasta at Abbondanza Italian restaurant.
We love our location, and the convenience of having a great grocery store and pharmacy, just 3 blocks away. I do make frequent trips to the Pike street market, as well as our weekly farmers market, for fresh, organic food, and I'm always energized by the tourist clicking pictures, and enjoying a favorite Seattle destination.
We are dog lovers. When in West Seattle, my dogs love our walks together at Lincoln Beach. When not in the city, we spend our time on Key Peninsula.
Scott VandeZande or Jan Place purchased this bungalow in 2010
We chose West Seattle, because we love all that it has to offer. Many wonderful specialty shops, farmers markets, restaurants, beaches, views of the water, mountains, and sunsets.
Relaxing in the jetted air rated tub. Cooking in the gourmet kitchen. Enjoying a glass of wine on the deck, while watching the sunset. a daily walk at Lincoln Beach, reading in the easy chair, a latte in the morning at
This large and comfortable house was perfect for an extended family of 7 adults including a 90 year old lady, and a toddler! While forewarned the house was not set up to be baby-proof, it was relatively easy to make it tolerably so. A safety gate and crib were specially provided. A room on the main entrance floor with its own bathroom was perfect for great-grandma. (This bathroom also had the jacuzzi, but great-grandma kindly let others use it as well). Kitchen was very well-equipped and table sat 10 so brother and fiance could join us for dinners. Nice grocery store within walking distance. We mostly played board games and did jigsaw puzzles (some we brought, some were there), but there is an entertainment center with Roku in the downstairs family room. We spread all our Christmas stockings on the coffee table in front of the cozy gas fireplace and Santa did arrive! Given it was December the patio and lounge chairs didn't get too much use, but we hope to visit again in the summer-- the view is great! We were very pleased to be allowed to have our little poodle with us (extra charge but reasonable). We met owner only briefly but all our dealings with her were pleasant.
We could not be happier with the home or Jan's level and quality of customer service provided. Please allow me to list all the ways this home made our stay in Seattle more enjoyable:
-She was an excellent communicator before, during, and after our stay at the home.
-She was flexible with us based on our personal needs and schedules (within reason).
-The house was MORE than adequately stocked with toiletry needs, cleaning supplies, as well as even the pantry!
-The home is beautiful. The upstairs area is perfect for dining and lounging, and the downstairs has plenty of room to crash in after a long day in the city!
-The view of the mountains from the deck on a clear day is simply spectacular.
-We utilized our own mode of transportation during our stay, but the home is within walking distance to the bus stop for public transit.
-The location in West Seattle is fantastic. We were about 5 minutes from the California/Alaska junction (TONS of local bakeries and fun shops), 12 minutes from Alki Beach, 15 (depending on traffic) from downtown and just a bit further from Pike Place, etc. It was far enough out of the city to avoid heavy traffic but close enough where a trip into the city wasn't at all inconvenient!
I'm sure if I sat to think I could come up with many more wonderful things to say, but all in all I could not recommend this home or Jan more highly. We lacked NOTHING during our stay. Thanks so much Jan for a wonderful experience, and we hope you'll have us again at our next venture in Seattle!
We stayed at this home for a long weekend to accommodate multiple couples coming in from different parts of the country for a wedding. We couldn't have spent better money. The owner of the house was extremely easy to work with and very hospitable towards us, and the house itself accommodated our needs beautifully. The front deck is perhaps my favorite part - even though it was the first weekend in November, it was still plenty nice outside - and we enjoyed the views, deck furniture, and big tree as we talked into the night. The kitchen and upstairs common area were perfect for making big breakfasts and socializing, and downstairs provided plenty of room to sleep and get ready for the wedding we all attended. The final morning we were there, a couple folks and I drove down to the famous bakery Nouveau in West Seattle and loaded up with a bunch of treats to bring back to the house. It's really nice how accessible the main stretch of West Seattle is. All the beds are also quite comfortable, including pull out futon upstairs. I really don't have anything negative to say about the house or the experience - and Jan, the owner, is an absolute pleasure to work with. I will be coming back to use this place again should we ever need a common landing site for all of our friends from out of town!
We came to Seattle with our 3 adult children and our 92-year-old father. The house was great for him, as the main floor held all his needs. I was disappointed that the "bedroom" on the main level was actually a sitting room with a hideaway bed. It would not have been comfortable to me at all, but Dad said he was comfortable, so I guess that's what counts. The beds in the two main bedrooms downstairs were VERY comfortable, and there were plenty of pillows and extra blankets.
The kitchen was very well stocked with pots/pans, utensils and dishes, and we appreciated that we were welcome to use condiments if needed. We enjoyed being able to prepare all our meals in the house, and people could eat when they wanted, allowing flexibility for all the various wake/sleep cycles and arrival/departure times.
The small grocery store 3 blocks away was great, and allowed for a nice bit of exercise and fresh air for us.
The view of Puget Sound from the deck, when not covered by fog or clouds, was AMAZING! We got some great family pictures on the deck, and would have loved to have a BBQ out there if the weather had permitted-it was October, after all.
Overall, what a great find - all agreed that staying at this house made our stay in Seattle like staying at home. And Jan, thank you for your flexibility on the day we left - we appreciated being able to stay a couple of extra hours before leaving for the airport.
My father-in-law was turning 60 and we wanted a place for the whole family to stay together. There were 5 of us total, all adults. I think this would be a better location for no more than 4 adults and up to 5 or 6 younger children, unless you have some teens or 20-somethings that don't mind sleeping on couches/futons. This would also be a nice location for a romantic getaway. We didn't utilize the fireplace or jet tub, but could see those being appealing to a couple. That being said, this was still a nice location for our family to all to be able to spread out and read and relax. The views from the deck were magnificent and we enjoyed the sunset every evening.
The location is within driving distance from downtown Seattle, and you can drive or take a bus to the water taxi that will take you across to one of the piers, or you can grab a ferry that will take you to Vashon Island. The house is also a short walk away from a grocery store and restaurants. We chose to walk to the water taxi one day and enjoy a delicious lunch on the dock at Marination Ma Kai before we left. It was voted America's best food truck in 2009 and everything we had was delicious! In the interest of full disclosure the walk from the house to there is a hike - around 2+ miles up and down hills. We are used to walking a couple miles a day, so to us it was a fun adventure.
We would also recommend eating at Matt's in the Market and Boat Street Cafe in downtown Seattle.
Jan was great! She was very welcoming and immediately responsive regarding a couple minor issues we had. All in all it was a lovely trip.
We stayed at this property for one week this summer, while traveling to Seattle for a wedding. With an age range of 3-89 in our family group, this comfortable and clean house answered all of our needs. There was plenty of seating in the kitchen and living room, a very nice soaking tub for baths, and our children even found a box of classic Lincoln Logs to play with - that was priceless! The wide open spaces and large windows on the first floor made it feel quite spacious, and we were able to enjoy the mountain views at every turn. Of course, our favorite spot was the huge deck! We took to retreating there whenever we could (and always at sunset) to visit, eat, read and relax. When we weren't at the house, we could easily access everything we needed in West Seattle, downtown and beyond. All in all, a very quiet and pretty spot - both inside and out. Thanks for a wonderful home base on our special trip, Jan!
