Overview

Claremont House Rental Photos and Description

House, 4 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 3 Baths, (Sleeps 8-10)

Welcome to North Star House and the Connecticut River Scenic Byway. Located on 700 acres in Cornish and Claremont New Hampshire, North Star House is the result of our year-long top-to-bottom restoration of this 1855 historic home. We’ve retained all of the historic features – slate roof, antique hardware, wavy glass windows, hand-carved millwork – while providing modern comforts, including a gourmet kitchen, two new full baths and a Jotul glass-fronted woodstove.

The house includes the traditional farmhouse first-floor front and rear parlors, with the rear parlor featuring a large south-facing bay window and wood stove. The front parlor includes a pull-out couch that can sleep two. Also on the first floor are the dining room with French door access to a south-facing patio, the large, sunny, eat-in kitchen, a screened porch with views of the Connecticut River and Mount Ascutney, a full bath, an indoor storage area for skis and kayaks and a two-car garage. Upstairs, North Star House features a master bedroom with views of the fields and the Connecticut River, three smaller bedrooms and two additional full baths. The house complies with modern energy codes, being fully insulated to keep the place warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

North Star House’s kitchen features fine custom cabinetry made in Vermont with counters of soapstone. There’s plenty of space for preparing exquisite meals, including a large central island with custom-made soapstone prep sink. Appliances include a “French door” stainless steel refrigerator, 36” gas stove with griddle and extra large oven, dishwasher, microwave, Cuisinart food processor, coffee maker and toaster oven. The kitchen is well stocked with copper, stainless and cast-iron cookware, dishes, glassware (including an extensive collection of wine and cocktail glasses), flatware and kitchen tools. Radiant floor heat warms the custom oak-strip floor. An oak kitchen table that seats 4 to 6 is perfect for eat-in meals or when the kids need a break from the dining room guests.

The front and rear parlors at North Star House include restored birch flooring, historic mouldings and restored wavy glass windows from the 1800s. A large woodstove keeps the two rooms cozy on a cold winter’s day or a chilly morning in the spring or fall. The front parlor includes an entertainment center with 32” Sony flat-screen TV with cable, DVD player (with our eclectic library of DVDs), 300 CD changer, turntable, audio unit (with iPod connection) and speakers. With our line of sight to Mount Ascutney, there’s great cell phone coverage, including 3G broadband modem service. Hgh-speed internet via cable is included with wireless access throughout the house.

North Star House is located on NH Route 12A (the Connecticut River Scenic Byway) in the historic Cornish Colony area. Nestled among working farms, the river and hundreds of acres of forest, the property offers almost unlimited recreational opportunities. With more than a quarter mile of private river frontage, North Star House provides direct access to fishing, swimming, kayaking and canoeing. Our neighbors at North Star Canoe Rentals can outfit you with canoes, kayaks and tubes for half- and full-day river excursions.

The home is furnished with everything you need for an enjoyable stay in our area, including towels, linens, a collection of movies and a well-equipped kitchen. During the spring, summer and fall, enjoy our many acres of landscaped gardens, lawn and fields. A delicious crop of blueberries awaits you during late July and early August, as do early fall apples and pears. Neighboring farmstands and farmers’ markets provide locally grown corn, tomatoes as well as countless other fruit and vegetables, locally made cheeses, chickens, and more!

North Star House’s 700 acres include a vast network of trails for casual strolls, cross-country skiing, serious hikes and mountain biking – both single track and double track. Connecting trails to the Cornish Town Forest are available for seriously technical biking, as well as hiking access to some great views of Mount Ascutney and the Vermont countryside. For a daytime (or nighttime) get-away, check out our restored sugar house with its woodstove and rustic collection of maple sugaring gear.

For weddings, North Star House offers a large flat lawn that is perfect for a large reception tent with views of the mountains, forests and river. Fields across the way provide virtually unlimited parking for your major event. We can provide contacts for local caterers, tent suppliers, musicians and even officiators! The restored 1820s Trinity Church, located just up Route 12A in Cornish, is a beautiful location for a traditional wedding ceremony.

Outstanding !

  • 5 of 5
We just returned from a 4 night stay at the North Star house and the house is wonderful. Bright, cheery, well stocked and a very nice location to visit many attractions as well as hiking in their woods. Having breakfast waiting for us in the refrigerator for our first morning was such a nice touch. Bill and Jenny have certainly put a lot of effort into making this house rental a special moment in all that visit it. The place is immaculately clean and the owners responded quickly to all emails. I would certainly recommend the North Star house as a rental. The Fall foliage was at its peak and there were many festivals in the area we enjoyed.

A beautiful renovated home

  • 5 of 5
A beautiful renovated home. Bill and Jenny did an excellent job at renovating this home. We were there for almost 2 weeks for our daughter's wedding and we held the rehearsal dinner and also all the bridesmaids hair the day of the wedding. Everyone felt comfortable and was not crowded. We will definitely return. Thanks again Bill and Jenny!

WOWZA!

  • 5 of 5
My BFF (of 50 years) and I reveled in the perfection of the North Star House! We were charmed by our hosts' thoughtfulness with breakfast fixings (pancake mix, maple syrup, oj, and the farm-fresh egg) waiting on arrival. The house, itself, was beautifully appointed with lovely bedrooms, splendid bathrooms and a kitchen to die for! The grounds were expansive and had frontage on the Connecticut River with views that just would not quit. We were in close proximity to train tracks, but obligingly the train rarely passed by. We were well situated to reach the breath-taking Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site and the quirky yet delightful Path of Life Sculpture Garden. Both Cornish, New Hampshire and Windsor, Vermont are but a stone's throw from the North Star's front door and with the brilliant festival of fall foliage, one might even be a tad sad that your ride from place to place wasn't much, much longer! We had an exceptional time, were in the lap of comfort and luxury and will long remember our our girls getaway to the North Star House! Thank you, Bill and Jen!

Great Two Week Vacation Spot

  • 5 of 5
We vacationed with our two children at the North Star House and had a wonderful time. The house is lovely and yard great for outdoor play. The kitchen is well stocked for gourmet cooking and meals. We hiked, fished, kayaked and biked all from the house. Loved the local farmer's markets and the bushes full of blueberries. Super clean - very easy to work with Bill and Jenny.

My Dream Wedding

  • 5 of 5
We just got back from our having our outdoor wedding ceremony and reception at the Northstar House. Bill and Jenny went above and beyond, doing a lot of extra work, helping us to prepare the property for the ceremony and reception, and they were so sweet about it. They were very laid back while at the same time being right there when I needed them, which helped this bride-to-be keep her head. The property is natural and beautiful with lots to explore. The house itself is stunning - it looks just like their pictures, if not better. The kitchen was just what I needed to pull off the reception (yes, I catered my own wedding!). They even had an entire Le Creuset set! I would have rented it just for the screened in porch! I really cannot say enough good things. This was the wedding of our dreams and I would not have had it anywhere else. We are now trying to find a reason to invite a few couples and go back. Bill and Jenny are such lovely people and the property is amazing - such a find!

Wonderful Home

  • 5 of 5
We came to the area to attend the graduation of my daughter from Dartmouth (25 minutes away). I am so glad we found this property. We needed 4 bedrooms to accommodate our family and found all we were looking for and more in this house. It is thoughtfully appointed, beautifully maintained and made us feel very comfortable during our stay. I would recommend this property to anyone!
