BONNE TERRE COTTAGE: LOUISIANA CAJUN COUNTRY ARTISTS' RETREAT

Breaux Bridge Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath (Sleeps 2)

Get away from it all & connect to Louisiana's Cajun and Creole countryside right outside Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. Our peaceful cottage is a great artists' retreat excellent for the fine art of relaxing - with lots of natural light & many amenities. Our setting is pastoral and we're within easy reach of so much of south Louisiana's great food, music, culture & nature. Come stay for a weekend, week, or more. Last minute inquires are welcome!

One recent guest said,'The hosts, an exceptionally wonderful couple, offer the right mix of southern hospitality and respectful privacy. For breakfast I ate eggs fresh from the owners' hens, and dinners became feasts enhanced with herbs and veggies picked from the garden that day....I made some wonderful meals in the kitchen, got some of my best rest in the cozy nest-like bedroom, and practiced my zydeco dance moves in the living room.'

We're in the heart of Cajun and Creole Country.: We're in the heart of Cajun & Creole country in Poché Bridge, 10 minutes from Breaux Bridge. Some of the many great places to visit in or near Breaux Bridge are: Poché's Market & Restaurant; Café des Amis, with their world famous Zydeco Breakfast on Saturday mornings; Buck & Johnny's Pizzeria; Luis Perez Art Gallery; Charlie T's Specialty Meat Market; Mulate’s Cajun Restaurant w/live music daily; La Poussiere Dancehall; Kelly Guidry Art Studio; several local antiques shops all within walking distance in Breaux Bridge and in May, the annual Crawfish Festival.

Just 20 minutes away is the city of Lafayette. Stop at the Lafayette Visitors Center to find out what's happening. Some of our favorite places in Lafayette are: Borden's Ice Cream Parlor; Judice Inn; Cedar Grocery; Deano's Pizza; The French Press; Sans Souci Fine Craft Gallery, where local artists sell their artwork; Charley G's Restaurant; & for great live music, Blue Moon Saloon & Guesthouse.

So much to see, so little time to see it all!: New Iberia is about 40 minutes away and there's so much to see: Shadows-on-the-Teche, an Antebellum home; Konriko Rice Mill, America's oldest working rice mill; Avery Island's Jungle Gardens which offers a self-guided driving or walking tour and is home to a 1000-year-old Buddha, a bird observatory & the Tabasco Pepper Sauce Factory; and Rip Van Winkle Gardens, twenty-five acres of semi-tropical paradise on beautiful Jefferson Island with an excellent restaurant there.

Head north toward Opelousas and stop off in Historic Grand Coteau. 'Hear the story & visit the shrine of the Miracle of Grand Coteau at Academy of the Sacred Heart, then stop to browse the antique/gift shops and sample the local cuisine.' On your way back to Bonne Terre Cottage, stop at Myran's Maison De Manger in Arnaudville for the best chocolate shake ever.

For a nice day trip, visit the South's largest remaining antebellum mansion, Nottoway Plantation, right outside the town of White Castle near Baton Rouge, La

More Natural Wonders ....: See alligators. Take a Swamp Tour of the Atchafalaya Basin (25 minutes from Cottage) or Lake Martin, (20 minutes from Cottage) the largest nesting area of wading birds in the United States. 'It's been listed as one of the top 10 bird watching spots in the United States. Avian activity at the lake is phenomenal! Each spring birdwatchers spy: blue, green & black crowned night herons; great, snowy & cattle egrets; white ibis; roseate spoonbills; American anhingas; barn swallows and wood ducks.' 'The fishing's great there and in the Atchafalaya Basin too!'

Also, check out Lake Fausse Point State Park, a 6,000-acre site which was once part of the Atchafalaya Basin.

Drive down & spend some time in historic St. Martinville, (approx. 30 minutes from our cottage). View the mother church of the Acadians, St. Martin de Tours Church, the fourth-oldest Roman Catholic church in Louisiana. Bonne Terre Cottage is located down a gravel road in Poché Bridge, a few miles north of Breaux Bridge and just outside Lafayette. We're organic gardeners, naturalists and music lovers.

We built our passive-solar home here in Acadiana and lived in this lovely cottage for many years before we outgrew it, and now it's our retreat too.

Bonne Terre Cottage contributes to a healthier planet by utilizing green household products such as energy efficient light bulbs, a programmable thermostat, an Energy Star-rated air conditioner, ceiling fans, energy-efficient windows and eco-friendly cleaning products and laundry detergent. We cultivate an organic garden, tend a small orchard and a flock of free range chickens. Our 10-acre homestead, which includes a two-acre woodlot, is a National Wildlife Federation certified wildlife habitat. We provide our guests with, recycling bins, a kitchen compost pail for organic waste, 100% cotton linens, natural soaps and sprays created by local artisans, Organic and Fair Trade Certified food products, cloth napkins and non-disposable dishes, access to books, music and DVDs by Louisiana artists and a non-smoking environment.

Peaceful spot in Bayou Country

  • 5 of 5
We really enjoyed our stay at Bonne Terre, even though the weather did not cooperate (record low temps). Jen & Todd were gracious hosts and we enjoyed life on their farm with the horses, goat and chickens. The cottage was quite comfortable and had everything we needed. The location was in the country, but easy driving distance to Lafayette and smaller towns in the area. Easy day-trip to the Baton Rouge area for plantation visits. Lots of great food and music in the area. We hope to return when the weather is warmer! Thanks, Jen!

Peaceful cottage

  • 5 of 5
This cottage is a peaceful retreat and it's perfect for anyone who needs some quality time relaxing. The cottage is fully equiped and we even had gratefruit, yogourt and granola for breakfast. Jen is very warm and welcoming. We had a nice time and I wish we could have stayed longer. I would definitely stay there again.

A Perfect Nature Place

  • 5 of 5
Bonne Terre Cottage is the spot for people who love natural surroundings, a rural environment, birds, and a beautiful cottage not far from a big woods. From every window you can keep an eye on 17 birdfeeders in the lovely yard and horses and chickens nearby. On warm December days we ate all 3 meals on the fabulous porch with its comfortable furniture and dining table! The friendly and generous owner has coffee and treats in the frig for your arrival and local herbal soaps and lotions by that great clawfoot tub. She could not be more helpful and accommodating. For morning walks, the countryside beckons from the cottage carport. It was hard for us to head back North after our 3-week stay.

Absolutely Fabulous!

  • 5 of 5
Trying to find the words to describe our stay at Bonne Terre Cottage is easy. Idylic, peaceful, restful are all appropriate but staying here is the only way to experience and appreciate this lovely cottage in rural southwest Louisiana. Everything needed for self catering is present in the cottage and our kind and caring hosts went out of their way to make us feel at home. For us, this is the only way to experience Cajun Country and will be coming back again. In one word, faultless!

Brining in a New Decade of My Life!

  • 5 of 5
Life is grand and no better way to bring in a new decade of life but at Bonne Terre Cottage! My youngest daughter decided to give me a beautiful gift of serenity for my 60th Birthday. We arrived very early the day before my birthday and was welcomed with not only a beautiful fall day, but also the peace and serenity that Bonne Terre Cottage fills your heart with. It amazes me at the incredible details owners Jen and Todd lay out to make sure your stay is not just welcoming but makes you feel like you've been there for years. I love the feeling of "stepping back in time". Hummingbirds were so plentiful, the squirrels frolicked in freedom, horses and goats so adorable to watch. It was like one big SIGH in my heart and a wonderful anticipation of waking up the following morning to a beautiful sunrise. As the sun rose the next morning I walked out on the porch and enjoyed morning coffee with my daughter. Sitting on the porch is like time standing still. When you walk away from the busy schedules that we all seem to get wrapped up in, it's so nice to be able to have uninterrupted time to reflect on what "was" and what "is" and what "is to come" For me, visions were renewed, ideas confirmed, excitement rekindled for what's to come. I am so grateful for the beautiful gift I received of my stay at the cottage, and grateful for people like Jen who pour heart and soul into the comforts and peace of the cottage. Going to the cottage is not your typical vacation where you return home NEEDING a vacation. No, instead when you go the Cottage, you return home ready to take on more dreams and move forward in life's journey! So very grateful for Bonne Terre Cottage! I have adopted it as my favorite place to go.

Bonne Terre Cottage, our charming cypress guest house, is located in the countryside right outside Breaux Bridge, and 25 minutes from Lafayette.

A recent guest describes our cottage as: 'The Perfect Home Base for Exploring Creole/Cajun Country's Mysteries and Delights. While in Louisiana researching a novel-in-progress, I was lucky enough to enjoy the peace, comfort, and charm of Bonne Terre Cottage for three weeks. The soulful wood cottage, with its soaring ceiling, wide porches, and sleeping loft, perfectly fit my desire for a peaceful retreat in nature balanced with a vibrant nearby social scene that included Cafe Des Amis and its Zydeco breakfasts Saturday mornings. (Can you say Fun?) Folks, the place is magical: fireflies sparkling in tree tops, cicadas signaling evening, and in the morning, the red streak of cardinals' flight across a pond to a wall of roses, just to give a hint of what you can expect.'

We hope you will come to stay with us at Bonne Terre Cottage.
