We are David and Sylvia Fike. We raised our three children in this home and have enjoyed the diverse beauty and activities of the Bay Area for the last 20 years. Now, David is the president of a liberal arts college in the Midwest and Sylvia is on sabbatical after a successful 30-year professional career as a leader and executive director of non-profit community-based organizations engaged in local, national, and international work.
We have extensive family and friends in this community and return to our home for short stays several times during the year. However, during these years of living and working in a different part of the country, we carefully nurture this family home and relish making it available for others to enjoy. Having both lived abroad and traveled frequently as a family and as a couple, we are able to anticipate many needs of vacation travelers and have tried to equip our home accordingly. Having lived in this area for much of our lives, we take pleasure in giving visitors guidance to many of the fabulous sites and activities of this exciting region, including those 'off the beaten track.
Sylvia Fike purchased this house in 1991
Kensington--in the Berkeley Hills area-- is a gem in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our house is two blocks from the Blake State and Gardens--the official home of the UC President. We love our neighborhood because it is full of interesting professionals, academics and artists. Kensington is a well kept secret as one of the best family-friendly neighborhoods and it is a central location to access any point of interest when you visit the area. Great public transportation, bike-friendly and its proximity to the major highways make it a great location for short or long stays, either for work or tourism related trip, and for relaxation.
Our house is perfect for a family or two families traveling together because it is very spacious. One of our favorite rooms is the kitchen because it is spacious for 2 cooks and the views are stunning. The three level design also allows you to have your children or youth playing in the family room while the adults enjoy their conversation and cocktails in the social area of the second level. Relaxing in the large deck at any time of the day and breath in the breeze from the Bay and gorgeous trees surrounding the house is a special treat. And overall, you will experience a peaceful state of mind in this house, perfect for relaxation. But if you have to do some work, the office/library is fully equipped and there is wireless internet. Kensington Park (almost our backyard) at the end of our block, offers tennis, basketball, running track, and children's activities and stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge. The location of the house is also central to access any point of interest in the Bay Area. Close to main freeways and subway stations. You can also walk, bike, bus or drive to shops at the Kensington Village, Kensington Circle, Berkeley Gourmet Ghetto, Solano shops, downtown Berkeley, Walk (3minutes) or drive to Tilden Regional Park (which offers many family and children's activities like the Mary-Go-Round, Pony Rides, Nature's Museum, The Little Farm and Lake Anza and more), and waterfront parks like Berkeley Marina and others, including the one-of-a-kind Point Isabel Dog Park.
A charming studio with private bath and kitchenette, for 1-2 person max, is also available at separate rate--inquire for rates and availability.
My family spent a week here while visiting our cousins in February and welcomed the wonderful weather after a winter that would not end back home. The house is clean and neat with a unique layout on multiple floors. The surrounding deck affords long views across the Bay and is a nice place to relax in the sun. Sylvia is always able to be contacted and is quick to resolve any situation that might come up. The location is perfect to San Francisco, Berkely or Oakland. The home is situated in a very upscale neighborhood on a quiet cul-de-sac with a public park at the end with tennis courts. Hiking trails are easily accessed into Wildcat Canyon Regional Park. Would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it. A+
My children and I had a very comfortable stay at Sylvia's property. She was very professional and a very clear communicator, and if we needed any support it was available, although we didn't, it was all set up so nicely. The kitchen was very usable and everything worked fine. The house has a wonderful Berkeley, Kensington genuine feel and it is set in a quiet neighborhood (no dogs barking, etc). It is close to the bus line for easy access to downtown Berkeley or to BART into the city. It is close to some robust walks into Tilden Park and so we were able to enjoy a few walks and runs and saw a gorgeous sunset over the Golden Gate bridge and Marin headlands, and a view of the city by the bay; remarkable. Berkeley is famous for its food, and we enjoyed the many nearby markets for organic and vegan options, as well as indulging in a few treats at some of the many tasty nearby restaurants. My son enjoyed shooting hoops at the nearby park below Kensington elementary at the end of the cul-de-sac, which also results in low street traffic. The house is multi-level so there are pockets for privacy and yet it is not too large to feel too separated. Comfortable, charming, safe, convenient.
10 of us, age 8 months to 70 years, travelled to Berkleley for a Family wedding. All of us were from South Africa and Australia. The beautiful house and studio were just so perfect for the whole family. The house was very well equipped and Sylvia was a perfect correspondent, who saw to all our needs and wants. We all just loved it and had such a memorable time that we will treasure forever. Beautiful walks close by. Couldn't have been better. Highly recommended
We were in Berkeley for a family event and were looking for a place where nine of us could gather. The group was ages 4 - 91 years and there was space for everyone. It was so much better than being in a hotel and then trying to find time/space to meet and gather informally. We shared breakfast as people got up and sat in the living room reviewing the day in the evening. We even had a family dinner night before everyone let. The large deck was an outdoor room that was wonderful for those of us from the East Coast who were just coming from snow and cold.
Sylvia was delightful to work with, always available to respond to any question before arriving and while there. The house was very clean, the kitchen was well equipped and the house was very comfortable. The location is great with the park down the street and the little village center close by. I was concerned about parking as we had 3 cars in our group. It seemed miraculous but there was always a space on the street without much inconvenience. We would highly recommend staying here and felt it was a privilege to have the house made available to us to enhance the family event.
This Kensington house was roomy, pretty, and comfortable. The quiet street and park just a half block away came in handy. highly recommended!
Windsore home was a perfect place for our family (2 adults and 2 kids) and our guests. We stayed there two and half months. House was well equipped (I personally loved the kitchen oven!) and well maintained, comfortable and very spacious. We love beautiful views, playgrounds and parks very near. Location was perfect for us for visiting e.g. San Francisco and wine valleys.
Owner was very helpful and caring! Thanks again Sylvia!
