Quiet location, convenient to trails Bar Harbor
We visited Maine to see Acadia National Park but our timing coincided with government shutdown, yet we still saw so much of Acadia. The carriage house has about everything you need; we loved being able to get groceries from the store literally down the road so we could cook our own dinners. Although Deborah's house shares the same driveway, she gave us our privacy, in fact we never saw her, but she even printed off our whale watching tour tickets and dropped them off in an envelope to our door. Southwest Harbor is a calm area with some restaurants and we found a sports bar close by to watch the Packer game (Joey's Place). Bar Harbor (20 min. drive) is where all the tourist action (shops, restaurants, bus tours, whale tours, sunset cruises...). Bar Harbor is definitely a place to check out but when you're on Mount Desert Island, being on the island is all about Acadia, and there are trails to pick up even a short walk from the house. We took a left out the driveway and walked about a quarter mile and picked up the Flying Mountain trail into the Valley Peak Trail and up to Saint Saveur Mountain. This trail takes you down by a calm water inlet but then high up to the peak, but allow 3+ hours for this trail. We started it at 2pm which was late considering sundown was around 6:30 in early October. The trails are back country so you're walking on boulders, stones, roots, etc. and the path is rarely flat, which makes it a really engaging trail for a moderate hiker. This trail even takes you onto some boulders to climb along which is a thrill! Another close by trail a short drive from the house is the Acadia Mountain trail, which again is back country but brings you to an incredible view of the surrounding mountains and the harbor. These two trails in particular allowed us to really experience Acadia despite the park closure. The location of the house is perfect...away from busy Bar Harbor and convenient to park trails. Just drive down the road and look for parked cars and you'll see park entrance signs to pick up a trail. The house has all the home amenities you could need/want, and although we ate out in Bar Harbor many times, we also saved a lot of money cooking many meals at the house. The house interior is gorgeous and the balcony is peaceful for morning coffee. Only things lacking would be a spice rack (there's only olive oil, salt/pepper) and a sharpener for the chef knife. Thicker TP would be nice too. Watch for DEER at night driving back from Bar Harbor!
