About The Owner

Building the Fernald Point Carriage House was a labor of love for me. Through out the home, I was able use milled cedar from most all trees that I cleared from the site. Having summered in Southwest Harbor while growning up, I am now so fortunate to be able to call this my year round home. Downeast Maine, and particularly Acadia National Park , is beautiful no matter what the season.

I also own and run the Mckinley Lane Cabin which is new to the market for the summer season of 2014. You can find it at www.homeaway.com #941918

The Owner purchased this apartment in 2009

Guestbook comments from the owner

Whether you are looking for a quiet getaway or want an outdoor active week or two with a friend, the Carriage House is where you want to be. It is ideally located smack dab in the middle of where the mountains meet the sea. The Carriage House was only built a few years ago so you can still smell the fresh wood while feeling like you are in a luxury loft cabin. There are even fresh linens in the cedar chest in the living room to enjoy a comfortable sleep on the futon if one bed isn’t enough for your group. I wouldn’t be surprised if it is the nicest place I will have ever lived. I was lucky enough to be there for a whole summer but would go back for a vacation in a heartbeat to get my fix of picturesque living.

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5
I recently spent 31/2 weeks at this wonderful carriage house on Mt. Desert Island right outside of S.W.Harbor. I could not have been happier in any other lodging. I was traveling alone for the purpose of doing a photography project and found the living quarters, people, and town itself to be so very hospitable and welcoming. The carriage house is as charming as it looks in the photos and the owner was very available and helpful in a nber of ways. S.W. Harbor is a good destination year round. Loved my stay.

Fernal Point Carriage House

  • 5 of 5
We had a delightful time at this well-kept, clean and tastefully appointed retreat. It was bigger than it appeared in photos. We are so glad that we chose to stay in Southwest Harbor rather than Bar Harbor. The property is set in the woods, away from any other houses. We loved the privacy. The owner was helpful from the begining in answering all our questions. We arrived right after most restaurants and activites were closed for the season. We had a nice dinner at Dry Dock, the only place open in the evening. The rest of the time we cooked as the kitchen was well-equipped. We loved our boating adventure on the mail boat out of Northeast Harbor to the Cranberry Islands. I hope we can visit again.

Quiet location, convenient to trails Bar Harbor

  • 5 of 5
We visited Maine to see Acadia National Park but our timing coincided with government shutdown, yet we still saw so much of Acadia. The carriage house has about everything you need; we loved being able to get groceries from the store literally down the road so we could cook our own dinners. Although Deborah's house shares the same driveway, she gave us our privacy, in fact we never saw her, but she even printed off our whale watching tour tickets and dropped them off in an envelope to our door. Southwest Harbor is a calm area with some restaurants and we found a sports bar close by to watch the Packer game (Joey's Place). Bar Harbor (20 min. drive) is where all the tourist action (shops, restaurants, bus tours, whale tours, sunset cruises...). Bar Harbor is definitely a place to check out but when you're on Mount Desert Island, being on the island is all about Acadia, and there are trails to pick up even a short walk from the house. We took a left out the driveway and walked about a quarter mile and picked up the Flying Mountain trail into the Valley Peak Trail and up to Saint Saveur Mountain. This trail takes you down by a calm water inlet but then high up to the peak, but allow 3+ hours for this trail. We started it at 2pm which was late considering sundown was around 6:30 in early October. The trails are back country so you're walking on boulders, stones, roots, etc. and the path is rarely flat, which makes it a really engaging trail for a moderate hiker. This trail even takes you onto some boulders to climb along which is a thrill! Another close by trail a short drive from the house is the Acadia Mountain trail, which again is back country but brings you to an incredible view of the surrounding mountains and the harbor. These two trails in particular allowed us to really experience Acadia despite the park closure. The location of the house is perfect...away from busy Bar Harbor and convenient to park trails. Just drive down the road and look for parked cars and you'll see park entrance signs to pick up a trail. The house has all the home amenities you could need/want, and although we ate out in Bar Harbor many times, we also saved a lot of money cooking many meals at the house. The house interior is gorgeous and the balcony is peaceful for morning coffee. Only things lacking would be a spice rack (there's only olive oil, salt/pepper) and a sharpener for the chef knife. Thicker TP would be nice too. Watch for DEER at night driving back from Bar Harbor!

Luxury Treehouse in Maine Woods

  • 5 of 5
This rental is exactly as described in every way. We have visited Acadia NP several times--always staying in SW Harbor--and this has been the most satisfactory accommodation yet. We would certainly return. We appreciated: uncluttered space in cabinets and closets, washer and dryer convenience, basic supplies included (paper towels, dishwasher liquid etc). The decor is tasteful and the post and beam construction is beautiful. The little balcony is just great--we really enjoyed this feature. Debbie's notebook of restaurant menus and area activities is excellent. Even though we are returnees we found new adventures. The area has many nice restaurants, but our personal favorite is Top of the Hill--reasonable cost, delicious food, friendly and efficient service.. A cruise we enjoyed was the Windjammer "Margaret Todd". A must see in Northeast Harbor are Asticou and Thuya Gardens. Finally, take advantage of the Island Explorer! What a convenience this is that makes an Acadia NP visit even more memorable

Fernald Point Carriage House

  • 5 of 5
We spent a wonderful week at the most beautiful and delightful Carriage House on Fernald Point Road. The Carriage House is a perfect spot for a peaceful and relaxing vacation. The listing description of the location is accurate but we found the setting and the property to be even better than the description. Nestled in the woods, the Carriage House is private and quiet. The gardens and the property are kept exquisitely.

The photos on the site accurately reflect the appearance and amenities but they don't reflect all of the care and thought that the owner has put into making this a comfortable and homey place to unwind and refresh. Each room has special touches that are aimed make the guest feel comfortable, welcome and at home.

The property and the Carriage House are clean and maintained to perfection. We would absolutely recommend this property to a friend or relative and in fact have already done so. We really look forward to returning!

Located in Southwest Harbor, the Carriage House is near spectacular forests, hiking trails in Acadia and breathtaking ocean views. There are restaurants and stores nearby and the location is just a short drive to Bar Harbor. Taken altogether...the Carriage House is an absolutely perfect vacation spot that we wholeheartedly recommend you consider.
