This destination is for the adventurous traveler. Our farm and cottage (there are actually two cottages available) are located 12 miles south of Carmel, California off scenic Highway One, two and a half miles from the coast on a paved road and one mile on a good dirt, though bumpy road. Upon leaving the coastal highway the anticipation builds as you drive through a gorgeous old growth redwood canyon, then leave the pavement for the last short mile on a hard-packed dirt road, and suddenly arrive to experience the wonders of Country Flat Farm. We recommend an all wheel drive vehicle for your comfort. IF YOU HAVE ANY HESITATION ABOUT DRIVING 1 MILE ON A BUMPY COUNTRY ROAD, PLEASE DO NOT INQUIRE. All visitors are met by the owners on the paved road and guided to the cottage upon first arriving.
(This property is owned and operated by Rotarians.) Please visit us online at countryflatfarm.com..
What to Expect in the Cottage: Our cottage is furnished with 'country charm.' Lush towels and individual bathrobes are provided. The bed features a brand new queen mattress crafted by a local company. Allergy free comforters warm you as you snuggle under tastefully chosen sheets and quilts. We have the latest high-tech fireplace heater that looks like a wood-burning fireplace, without the hassle. We have recently added beautiful new bamboo floors which add to the charm and comfort of our guests. There is no tv, phone, or cell phone service so please plan accordingly . There is, however, internet access so that you may use your computer to communicate with the outside world if necessary. Some guests are finding they can use skype if they have that capability on their computers. If you want to watch movies we ask that you bring your own DVD's rather than download them from the internet. The kitchen has a stove, refrigerator, toaster, dishes, cutlery, glasses, dishtowels, pots and pans, coffee maker, and tea kettle. All you need to bring is your own food and drink. The owners are beekeepers, so fresh sage honey is available for our guests.
Things to Do in the Area: There are wonderful opportunities for outdoor activities near the property and to the north and south off of Highway One. Hiking trails abound in the Palo Colorado area where we are located. Access to the Ventana Wilderness is 7 miles away. The Monterey Peninsula is only 12 miles to the north and Big Sur 13 miles to the south. Both destinations offer amazing restaurants, shopping, sightseeing, golfing, biking, and surfing. Additionally, Monterey hosts the world renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium.
For me, there is now question that Country Flat Farm was the highlight of our stay in the US this trip. We did most of the two and half weeks through private apartment booking agencies and were stunned by the beauty of Janie and Peter idyllic retreat up in the hills of Big Sur.
We were met by the lovely Janie and took the exciting drive up into the hills, but when we opened out onto Country Flat Farm and saw the incredible apartment we were to live for the next four nights, we were blown away. Views from every window. Silence fluttering around the tranquil landscape. The place was breathtaking.
Peter and the dog came out to greet us and show us around, then we were alone for four wonderful days. I even bathed in the lovely cast iron bath whilst watching the sun go down over the pacific ocean. Blimey!
So, in short, if you're after a quiet, relaxing break with lovely guests in one of the most tranquil areas of the US, Country Flat Farm is for you. I, for sure, will be back to write. I can't imagine a better place to energise my creative juices. Thank you so much, Janie and Peter. You have created an idyll.
My girlfriend and I stayed in one of the two cottages on Janie's and Peter's Country Flat Farm for two nights in early January -- and in hindsight, we should have stayed a LOT longer!! The cottage was absolutely stunning with views of the wilderness and ocean along with it's privacy and cozy feel. We celebrated our one year anniversary and my girlfriend's birthday here -- sharing a bottle of wine while watching the beautiful sunset from our room. Even the bathtub had views that urged you to extend your trip and soak in the beauty of Big Sur on such a tranquil and wholesome farm. We couldn't have been more fortunate and delighted to have stayed here. A word about the hosts (Janie and Peter) -- terrific. Janie was so very accommodating and even met us at the driveway to show us in, and shared her thoughts on the best restaurants in the area that could possibly cater to us as vegetarians. They really left us to enjoy our time after showing us in, but invited us to wonder around the farm and pick fresh lemons and apples anytime, which we certainly did (they were so fresh and delicious!).
Out of all our previous experiences on VRBO and AirBnB (more than I can count) plus our 12 nights along the California Coast as part of this trip, our stay at the cottage on Country Flat Farm really topped it all. It was the most serene, wonderful place we have stayed together.
Looking forward to staying here again!!
Thanks Janie & Peter!
The farm is so beautiful and the cabins are very clean and comfortable with stunning views. We were really blown away.
We didn't see much of the hosts beyond our arrival but they were very kind and gracious with us! We failed to follow their arrival instructions, greatly inconveniencing them (Follow their instructions! PRINT the directions!) We were waiting to meet them at the wrong point along the road because we hadn't printed the directions as they suggested, but simply hoped we'd remember. Well, we didn't remember and Peter was waiting around for us for a long time till we finally connected via phone at the restaurant on the highway. But he was very kind and gracious even though we wasted his time. They are good people! But don't make the same mistake we did! Follow their instructions carefully as the lack of cell reception can prove truly crippling!
This was a great place to get away from everything! My husband and I celebrated our one year anniversary and this was a perfect place to relax. Janie and her husband are very kind and generous. Their home and farm is simply wonderful. They will let you roam around the farm and pick fruit and eggs as you please. Point Lobos State Park is nearby and it is a pleasure to go hike around! We definitely recommend it.
A few notes:
- Be sure to have a car that can get up a small, dirt, windy uphill road. The Rommel's live on a property that is at the top of a mountain road. Definitely worth it though!
- Be sure to get groceries beforehand as it takes about 30 minutes to get to the 1 from their house one way.
- The fire house is 2 miles up the road you turn off originally—don't wait at the bottom like we did. :/
- Cell service is available just up the 1 at the Rocky Nook (sp of name?) Restaurant should you need to call the Rommels.
We would definitely come back! It was a treat. Thank you Rommels!
My boyfriend and I stayed here in April and we had an amazing experience. The owners were incredibly reliable, helpful and accommodating. The road was, as described, definitely a little scary, especially going up the first time, but it was fine after we got more comfortable with it. The cottage is absolutely lovely and the view is spectacular. We had all of the cooking utensils that we needed and basic stuff like oil, vinegar, etc. The family also gave us a basket of eggs and fresh farm honey which was amazing. They were extremely helpful with providing advice on nearby hikes and activities. Overall, it was a wonderful experience at a very reasonable rate. I would highly recommend this rental.
We just returned home from Country Flat Farm and our wonderful vacation cottage. We were there for five nights and only left the property twice. We chose this location as a special treat for my husband's landmark birthday. Our college-age daughter accompanied us and we all had a great time relaxing in this beautiful, unique setting, among oaks and redwoods. Our cottage had everything we needed, including an iPod dock to listen to our favorite tunes while reading or star-gazing in the zero-gravity lounge chairs provided on our deck (we loved them so much, we ordered two of them and they were waiting for us when we returned home). Peter and Janie were great hosts and made sure we were comfortable and felt welcome to wander the grounds. The honey and eggs were so good, we bought extra and brought some home. The WWOOFers (look it up) who worked at the farm were the nicest, most interesting young people and also went out of their way to make us feel welcome. I also want to emphasize that the drive up the dirt road was FINE! We have a four cylinder, two wheel drive Acura and we had no problem. This should not discourage anyone from visiting Country Flat Farm. And, to dispel something said in an old review, the cottages are VERY private and there is no way anyone can see you from the road. We each took baths in the claw-foot tub every day and savored the time relaxing in the bath while enjoying the spectacular views through the window at the foot of the tub. As we pulled into our driveway this evening, the sun was setting in our Southern California town and our daughter commented wistfully that we were "very far away from the farm" and she added that our sunset was nice, but not as beautiful as the one at Country Flat.
The cabin is as beautiful as advertised and the views are even better. The valley where Janie and her family lives is sunnier than the rest of often-foggy Big Sur and we loved waking up to sunshine and stunning views of the redwood forest. The cottages are definitely not easy to get to (four wheel drive is a must!) but Janie warned us beforehand so we were prepared. They are great hosts and we had a lovely stay! Thanks.
Our cottage and organic family farm are located on 50 acres of gorgeous land 3 miles inland from spectacular coastal Highway One between Carmel and Big Sur. The magnificent Monterey Peninsula, 30 minutes north by auto, boasts beautiful beaches, world renowned wineries, top ranked golf courses, art galleries, music festivals (Monterey Blues in late June and Monterey Jazz in mid September) annually), hiking, biking, and surfing. The Big Sur community 30 minutes to the south offers hiking, restaurants, galleries, surfing, horseback riding, music and incredible vistas of the Pacific Ocean with mountains plunging right down to the coast. We are about 2 1/2 hours south of San Francisco by auto.
