ECO-GETAWAY IN SPECTACULAR BIG SUR COASTAL MOUNTAINS

Big Sur Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Redwood cottage which sleeps two and has full bathroom+kitchen

THIS A VERY UNIQUE PROPERTY. 1 MILE ON A DIRT RURAL ROAD OFF PAVED ROAD. PLEASE READ FULL DESCRIPTION BEFORE INQUIRING. WE WORK DILIGENTLY TO NOT DISTURB OUR NEIGHBORS.OWNER DOES NOT USE CALENDAR UNLESS FULLY BOOKED. PLEASE EMAIL FOR AVAILABILITY. THREE NIGHT MINIMUM IN SUMMER MONTHS.

This captivating one bedroom cottage is built of local materials and nestled in the oaks above our farm. Expect a retreat spot with spectacular views of Pacific sunsets, coastal oaks and redwoods, and the surrounding Santa Lucia mountain range. For those of you “ecologically minded” folk, our guests' stay is fully sustained by solar power and a spring-fed stream. The cottage sleeps two persons, has internet access and a fully equipped kitchen and bathroom. A queen futon couch is available for extra guests or children.

Beauty, peace, and serenity are the themes of your stay. Nature abounds not only in the special setting of the cottage and its views, but also on our fifty acres of property. Organic Meyer lemons, fruit trees, and berries in season delight the senses and tempt the palate. Most guests are drawn to our property as a place to renew.

For the Adventurous Traveler: Owner does not use calendar unless fully booked. Please email for availability.

This destination is for the adventurous traveler. Our farm and cottage (there are actually two cottages available) are located 12 miles south of Carmel, California off scenic Highway One, two and a half miles from the coast on a paved road and one mile on a good dirt, though bumpy road. Upon leaving the coastal highway the anticipation builds as you drive through a gorgeous old growth redwood canyon, then leave the pavement for the last short mile on a hard-packed dirt road, and suddenly arrive to experience the wonders of Country Flat Farm. We recommend an all wheel drive vehicle for your comfort. IF YOU HAVE ANY HESITATION ABOUT DRIVING 1 MILE ON A BUMPY COUNTRY ROAD, PLEASE DO NOT INQUIRE. All visitors are met by the owners on the paved road and guided to the cottage upon first arriving.

(This property is owned and operated by Rotarians.) Please visit us online at countryflatfarm.com..

What to Expect in the Cottage: Our cottage is furnished with 'country charm.' Lush towels and individual bathrobes are provided. The bed features a brand new queen mattress crafted by a local company. Allergy free comforters warm you as you snuggle under tastefully chosen sheets and quilts. We have the latest high-tech fireplace heater that looks like a wood-burning fireplace, without the hassle. We have recently added beautiful new bamboo floors which add to the charm and comfort of our guests. There is no tv, phone, or cell phone service so please plan accordingly . There is, however, internet access so that you may use your computer to communicate with the outside world if necessary. Some guests are finding they can use skype if they have that capability on their computers. If you want to watch movies we ask that you bring your own DVD's rather than download them from the internet. The kitchen has a stove, refrigerator, toaster, dishes, cutlery, glasses, dishtowels, pots and pans, coffee maker, and tea kettle. All you need to bring is your own food and drink. The owners are beekeepers, so fresh sage honey is available for our guests.

Things to Do in the Area: There are wonderful opportunities for outdoor activities near the property and to the north and south off of Highway One. Hiking trails abound in the Palo Colorado area where we are located. Access to the Ventana Wilderness is 7 miles away. The Monterey Peninsula is only 12 miles to the north and Big Sur 13 miles to the south. Both destinations offer amazing restaurants, shopping, sightseeing, golfing, biking, and surfing. Additionally, Monterey hosts the world renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Guestbook comments from the owner
For me, there is now question that Country Flat Farm was the highlight of our stay in the US this trip. We did most of the two and half weeks through private apartment booking agencies and were stunned by the beauty of Janie and Peter idyllic retreat up in the hills of Big Sur.

We were met by the lovely Janie and took the exciting drive up into the hills, but when we opened out onto Country Flat Farm and saw the incredible apartment we were to live for the next four nights, we were blown away. Views from every window. Silence fluttering around the tranquil landscape. The place was breathtaking.

Peter and the dog came out to greet us and show us around, then we were alone for four wonderful days. I even bathed in the lovely cast iron bath whilst watching the sun go down over the pacific ocean. Blimey!

So, in short, if you're after a quiet, relaxing break with lovely guests in one of the most tranquil areas of the US, Country Flat Farm is for you. I, for sure, will be back to write. I can't imagine a better place to energise my creative juices. Thank you so much, Janie and Peter. You have created an idyll.

Absolutely wonderful

  • 5 of 5
My boyfriend and I stayed here in April and we had an amazing experience. The owners were incredibly reliable, helpful and accommodating. The road was, as described, definitely a little scary, especially going up the first time, but it was fine after we got more comfortable with it. The cottage is absolutely lovely and the view is spectacular. We had all of the cooking utensils that we needed and basic stuff like oil, vinegar, etc. The family also gave us a basket of eggs and fresh farm honey which was amazing. They were extremely helpful with providing advice on nearby hikes and activities. Overall, it was a wonderful experience at a very reasonable rate. I would highly recommend this rental.

Even Better Than We Expected

  • 5 of 5
We just returned home from Country Flat Farm and our wonderful vacation cottage. We were there for five nights and only left the property twice. We chose this location as a special treat for my husband's landmark birthday. Our college-age daughter accompanied us and we all had a great time relaxing in this beautiful, unique setting, among oaks and redwoods. Our cottage had everything we needed, including an iPod dock to listen to our favorite tunes while reading or star-gazing in the zero-gravity lounge chairs provided on our deck (we loved them so much, we ordered two of them and they were waiting for us when we returned home). Peter and Janie were great hosts and made sure we were comfortable and felt welcome to wander the grounds. The honey and eggs were so good, we bought extra and brought some home. The WWOOFers (look it up) who worked at the farm were the nicest, most interesting young people and also went out of their way to make us feel welcome. I also want to emphasize that the drive up the dirt road was FINE! We have a four cylinder, two wheel drive Acura and we had no problem. This should not discourage anyone from visiting Country Flat Farm. And, to dispel something said in an old review, the cottages are VERY private and there is no way anyone can see you from the road. We each took baths in the claw-foot tub every day and savored the time relaxing in the bath while enjoying the spectacular views through the window at the foot of the tub. As we pulled into our driveway this evening, the sun was setting in our Southern California town and our daughter commented wistfully that we were "very far away from the farm" and she added that our sunset was nice, but not as beautiful as the one at Country Flat.

Great stay

  • 5 of 5
The cabin is as beautiful as advertised and the views are even better. The valley where Janie and her family lives is sunnier than the rest of often-foggy Big Sur and we loved waking up to sunshine and stunning views of the redwood forest. The cottages are definitely not easy to get to (four wheel drive is a must!) but Janie warned us beforehand so we were prepared. They are great hosts and we had a lovely stay! Thanks.

Off the Grid Breathtaking Beauty

  • 5 of 5
Like a hobbit world, Country Flat Farm is perched in a verdant landscape and nestled into the top of a terraced hilltop. A beautiful orchard of lemon trees welcomes you at the end of a wonderful drive up the hill. The driveway is very manageable, just go slow and enjoy the view. You will see the fog roll in the canyon below but rarely close out the sun where the cabins sit. Our cabin, East of Eden, provided us with everything we needed for a wonderful relaxing seven day stay. We happily drove up and down the road daily to go to one of the wonderful trails that extend into the Ventana wilderness off the main canyon road. We enjoyed fresh eggs and wonderful honey complements of the owners. They have put their hearts and soul into transforming this little slice of heaven into an organic farm but by no means have they taken away the beauty of the rugged Big Sur area. We loved soaking in the tub and looking out unfettered into the sun setting over the ocean. The beautiful expanse of glass on three sides of the cabin gave the sense of staying in a treehouse. The owners met our every need and more. Thank you and can't wait to return soon.

Felt trapped and on display

  • 2 of 5
Unfortunately our experience was not very pleasant. My husband and I read all the rental agreements and information they sent us beforehand. The main thing they mentioned is that you need a 4-wheel drive vehicle and should not be afraid of dirt roads. We drive dirt roads all the time, so not an issue. What they don't tell you is that the dirt road is a long, steep, one-lane dirt road that winds up the mountain. In some spots, there are shear drop offs on one side. The road is so narrow that if another car comes, one of you has to back up until someone can get around. If, like me, you have been run off the road and into a tree by a possibly drunk driver who then fled the scene and you had to be pulled out of the car while it was on fire, this road might make you extremely nervous.
We get to the cottage and the owner goes overs all the features. He never once says you are not allowed to walk on the dirt road. Nor does it say this in the rental agreement. Apparently it is mentioned in one of the info sheets in the kitchen, but since I figured the owner told us everything we needed to know, I did not read those right away.
We decided to go for a hike the next day. The road made me nervous, so we decided to walk it. Everyone we passed was very nice and waved at us. On the way back, after hours of hiking, a man had his dog charge us on the road. The dog was growling and baring teeth. We both froze. The guy questioned who we were and where we were staying. We told him, and he said fine. He did not call off his dog until the end. And he was a total jerk in his demeanor. All we were doing was walking back to the cottage. Later, we got a passive aggressive note from the owner saying a neighbor had called to report people walking and to remind us we are not allowed to walk anywhere. We were in the cottage at the time. The owners could have talked to us in person, but I guess they don't like having to talk to their guests.
Also, no curtains on any window. The shower? A bath tub with a shower head, no curtain. It would be fine, except you face a full length window that faces the road. So when you shower your privates are on display. The windows might be treated so people cannot see in, but it made us feel as though we were on display. We were not comfortable being intimate either for the same reason.
That said, the cottage is very nice, and the views are spectacular. Love the chickens. If not for the walking/privacy issue, it would have been fantastic!!

Owner's Response: We are shocked and saddened to learn that Monica had such a disappointing experience. We make every effort to explain the road conditions and caution guests not to come if they are uncomfortable with country roads. Our family and friends have been coming to our property for 30 years to visit. Had Monica told us of their discomfort we would have been happy to drive them out to the paved road and pick them up as needed. We are very responsive to our guests' needs as they arise.
There are no curtains on the main living area so as not to block the views. No one can see into the cottages. The bedroom alcove is quite private with a shade at the end of the bed.
As for the neighbors, we have promised them our guests will not walk beyond our property out of respect for their privacy. We advise our guests with a written notice in the cottage and in the guidelines to visiting our area. Evidently we were remiss in reiterating that information in person upon arrival to Monica and her husband. We are truly sorry for this oversight. We have no idea what the "passive aggressive" note is about. Perhaps it was left in an effort to not disturb their privacy, something we are very conscious about.

Great Find

  • 5 of 5
I was looking for lodging options for our Big Sur trip, and found rather limited options for those who didn't want to camp. Inns and B&B's are very expensive, many starting around $350/night despite very mediocre ratings. You can find some cheaper, but they are generally rated poorly. And then there are some nicer, higher-end options, but many didn't allow children (we are family of four).

We were very fortunate to be able to book a cottage at Country Flat Farm due to a last minute cancellation. It is not right on the coast, but in return, you are rewarded with a beautiful drive through the redwoods to reach a remote farm that sits above the coastal fog (we have 4-wheel drive and didn't have any problems with the dirt road). We enjoyed exploring the orchard of lemon, peach and grapefruit trees, while my girls loved playing on a nearby rope swing and stream. We visited most of the popular destinations in Big Sur, but some of our favorites were nearby (and less crowded) at Garrapata Beach, Garrapata Point and Soberanes Point.

Callie, Mike, Ben, Janie and Peter were all very friendly and helpful and made us feel at home during our 4 night stay. To top off an awesome trip, our visit coincided with the height of the Perseid Meteor showers, which my daughter and I watched from the porch a couple of nights. It was quite a show to remember!
