Unique features of this house -
The view and open-air feel of this well appointed house is unparalleled. The architectural design of windows and sliding glass offers panoramic vistas of Pacific and mountainscapes wherever your eye is drawn. Close neighbors are Canadians, who live here year around and assist in property management to ensure your experience is first class.
This small oasis of Costa Rican geography, from Dominical to Palmar Norte, is unique in that the Fila Costena Mountains sweep down so close to the coastline that they virtually touch the ocean.
As a result, eco-activities are endless. Under the careful guardianship of the Costa Rican people, who are helpful, friendly and generous, the wild areas have been carefully protected from unrestrained development. The indigenous rainforest growth and wildlife of the Tres Rios Valley make this a peaceful Garden of Eden.
Casa Fila Costena: This jewel-box of a “Casa” is nestled between the majestic peaks of the Fila Costena, the coastal mountain range of Southwest Pacific Costa Rica, and the Pacific Ocean. Perched on a private ridge with an unobstructed view of the Pacific Ocean, the estuary of the Rio Terraba, and Isla Ballena; your front yard is the rainforest valley of Tres Rios complete with a 90 metre waterfall which tumbles into the cooling waters of the river. Hiking, rappelling and canyoneering await at your doorstep.Self guided trails have been cut through the primary rainforest, just minutes from the house.
Your morning wakeup includes the echoing call of the Howler Monkey troops, the chirp of the Toucan, and the chortle of the Laughing Falcon White faced monkeys crash through the trees in the valley below.
The seabreeze during the day and the fresh mountain air at night make air-conditioning unnecessary.
Your morning starts with a swim in the privacy of the infinity edge pool, only steps away from either of the two master bedroom suites.
Activity and Entertainment: The Ojochal/Uvita area of Costa Rica is perpetually green even in the “dry” season. Activities in this area are endless. In the valley, within walking distance of the house there are numerous trails and opportunities to hike in primary rainforest. It is never hard to find your own private stream or pool in the numerous rivers that cascade down from the mountain peaks. This area is well known for its numerous pristine beaches, and within a short drive there is surfing in Dominical, scuba diving or snorkeling at Isla Ballena or Cano Island, zip-lining or bird watching at Hacienda Baru, a Mangrove river trip on the Sierpe, river kayaking on the Rio Terraba. You are of course on the doorstep of Corcovado National Park - one of the most biodiverse park preserves in the world. A day trip to Boruca - home of the Boruca mask carvers, horse back riding, deep sea fishing, golfing, whitewater rafting if you are looking for more adrenalin packing, are just some of the activities you might try.
This is our second trip to Costa Rica and to this house- once just wasn't enough after experiencing the most relaxing vacation with unbeatable views, wildlife at your doorstep, an impeccably designed, built and furnished home. The pictures of the house are right on, if not even understating how amazing it is in person. The new palapa is great for morning coffee and bird watching, a great addition to an already ideal spot! The pool is unbeatable, it is hard to imagine a reason to leave the house, but if you do, you won't regret it. The beaches are great, ventanas and Leonora beach club, amazing restaurants (citrus & exotica) and plenty of activities if you want them (Corcovado rainforest tour, OSA zip lining, horse rides). Did I mention the daily toucans & howler monkeys at the house and the ocelot we saw tonight on our way home from dinner? Amazing! The year rounders here on the mountain, the Hamilton's, are great should you need anything, and the owners are also great! Renting a car locally is a must, a rugged manual preferably, and getting here from San Jose is a decent trek (hire a driver!) but it is all so worth it! Hopefully this won't be our last visit to this magical hidden gem in a still un-touristy part of CR!
Having briefly viewed this property a year ago, we could hardly wait to return. We stayed with good friends and found that with the two master bedrooms, there was no issue as to who had which room. The tap water made for excellent safe drinking water. The washer and drier within the unit were invaluable. The property is very well maintained, looks brand new. The layout and design were well thought out. The gardens are remarkable, flowers in bloom everywhere. We loved the infinity pool with the view. We enjoyed watching the humming birds in the morning while looking over the valley to the ocean in the morning with a fresh cup of Costa Rican coffee. A very "zen" environment was definitely achieved. There is tremendous privacy afforded by the gardens and architecture.
We were taken on hikes along the river and repelling by Tony Hamilton, another resident in the community. We enjoyed a dinner with the neighbor and his many stories and great dry sense of humor. Everyone is so helpful, from assisting with transportation to directing us to activities and attractions. There is a real sense of community. The maps, books, suggestions were all very useful. The WiFi was helpful, however stopped functioning part way through our visit which we understand happens in Costa Rica.
The 4 wheel drive vehicle we rented was very useful and necessary. We visited a few beaches and had meals at local restaurants. We did cook several meals ourselves in a well equipped kitchen, however. There were many other potential activities that we did not take advantage of, but will during future visits. We enjoyed the recently finished walking trail that had just been completed.
I left promising myself to return to this location in the future. Our biggest regret was not staying longer. Thank you Bruce and Val for sharing your beautiful casa!
We traveled down to Costa Rica as a couple with our 3 month old baby.
We were looking for a romantic getaway and an escape from the cold Canadian winter - what we found at Casa Fila Costina EXCEEDED our expectations in every way possible.
The property and house are incredible - so stunning. The photos, although striking, don't do this place justice - it's a gorgeous, modern, comfortable home nestled in a dense and luscious jungle. Every detail has been attended to, from the beautiful handcrafted furniture, to the very well equipped kitchen, to the to-die-for-infinity pool, to the exquisite landscaping. The creative design of the house allows you to feel as though you're living outside, steps from the jungle.
The road up the mountain is an adventure the first time you drive it, but we were old hats by the end!
We woke up each morning to the sounds of the birds and monkeys, and the mist rising over the trees, and ended each night watching the sun set over the ocean from the pool. The weather was spectacular every single day!
The mountain community provides the luxury of absolute privacy combined with the support and community of neighbors at the drop of a hat should you desire.
As we had a small baby, I spent days lounging in the pool, picking fresh lemons from nearby trees, taking easy but beautiful walks in the jungle on trails that the residents of the mountain maintain, and visiting with the incredibly friendly and helpful neighbors who were always ensuring we had everything we needed.
My husband was more adventurous, rappelling down the stunning waterfalls steps from the house, hiking through riverbeds, surfing at Dominical beach (25 minutes by car), even para-gliding, again all with the help and direction of the folks in the "neighborhood".
The grocery store, excellent hospital (not that we needed it!) as well as many delicious local and international restaurants were about a 20 minute drive from the house, along with a very well equipped grocery store carrying both North American and Costa Rican amenities. The mangoes at the local fresh fruit stands were to-die-for!
We felt like jungle kings and queens in a true paradise. We can't think of a more spectacular spot in all our travels. We definitely hope to have the privilege of returning to Casa Fila Costina many more times in the future!
We had the happy occasion of spending a week at beautiful Casa Fila Costena this March.
This lovely two bedroom home is spotless inside and out. Everything is new and well cared for. There was nothing that we missed from home!
The views of the surrounding jungle, the ocean 1200 FT below, the gorgeous daily sunsets and the sounds of a great variety of beautiful birds and the occasional howler monkey made us very aware that we were experiencing the best of Costa Rica.
The neighborhood provides places for walking and friendly faces along the way, although no one is right nearby. The road up is an adventure in itself, but our 4 wheel drive vehicle took us there with no trouble.
Thanks to Bruce and Val for an exceptional experience!

As a Costa Rican, I have stayed in a wide array of places all over the country. I must say that this is one of the best places I have spend a vacation on. My friends and I found the location of the house to be the perfect balance between being away from it all, but having quick access to nearby attractions such as beaches and National Parks. At the house, you are on top of a mountain with a superb ocean view and in direct contact with nature, but in less than 15 minutes you can drive down to the beaches and various top quality restaurants. Please do come in a 4 x 4 vehicle, it is a must! The house is actually even nicer than it looks in the listing photos. The property is clean, and the maintenance of the gardens is excellent. I would definitely recommend this property to a relative or friend, or anyone wanting to explore one Costa Rica's most beautiful regions. Also I would specially recommend this place for nature lovers and those fond of outdoor activities and adventure seekers. Here you can do hiking, rappelling, bird watching, or simply relax in the pool and enjoy the view. Check the restaurants in Ojochal and consider a visit to Corcovado National Park. If you enjoy Scuba Diving, Caño's Island is an excellent spot only a short boat ride away. Most year round, the Hamiltons will be living in their nearby home. They proved to be excellent people who will gladly help you with suggestions for activities nearby or assist you with any special requests you may have. We will definitely rent again!
We loved it so much the first time that this was our second vacation in Costa Rica at the beautiful Casa Fila Costena. It was as great this year as it was last year! We spent the month of February immersed in the atmosphere of the mountain and the wonderful people who live on it. Speaking from experience, you will find no warmer or more helpful community than the neighbours above and below you on this incredible little piece of paradise. As private and secluded as you are, if you wish, help, advice and good fun are never more than a radio call away. We ended up enjoying the neighbours so much that we entertained them and were in return entertained in their lovely homes a number of times.
However, if you never wanted to lay eyes on another soul during your stay in Shangri la that too would be easy to do!
Tony and Linda, who manage the rental property, were a wealth of knowledge and advice and even took us rapelling a number of times. Ask them about becoming a member of the Rap Cascada Sandalo group. Our introduction to rapelling was an experience beyond explanation-just incredibly exciting and beautiful, plus we were able to purchase t-shirts at the end of it to prove to our friends back home that we are now official members of the 100m. rapell club! Not bad for a couple floating around the "60"years young zone.
This is a wonderland for outdoor adventure as other reviewers have stated and this year Bruce and Val directed us to an extrordinary jungle and river walk immediately out their back door. You will want to do your exercise early as the day is pretty warm by 10:00 a.m. but lounging around the infinity pool after lunch and sipping on a frosty gin and tonic takes the edge off any heat. We never saw a cloud in the sky for the month of February!
The villa itself is so lovely you won't want to leave. It is beautifully appointed with custom cabinetry and furnishings and the beds and linens are excellent quality. The kitchen has been set up by someone who obviously loves to cook and the fridge's ice dispenser provides a steady supply. Everything is beautifully maintained by people who obviously treasure the property themselves. I can't even imagine the hours that must have gone into planting and maintaining the gardens and trees.
Some of our other faves: Citrus Restaurant in Ojochel, the french bakery in Ojochel, the Dome in Uvita for great burgers and smoothies, groceries at BM in Uvita, fresh ceviche at Los Mangalores, day trip to Corcovado.
More recently in 2013 the mountain top behind the house has been deemed a world class paragliding site!!!
