The Key West Golden Heron is a Gold Star Landmark home, walking distance to the beaches, shopping and famous Duval Street, yet quietly situated in Old Town.
One of the most spacious and charming high-end homes on the island, the Golden Heron has been a Key West landmark for many years. Originally the neighborhood grocery store (circa 1906), this home affords an ideal corporate/executive retreat. The large custom painted front room provides a beautiful place for a romantic wedding reception. It is larger and more unique than many other 5 bedroom private homes on the island, and virtually the entire interior of the house has been painted by a noted German artist.
Many famous personalities have come to the property over the last 100 years, and many historical events have transpired here. For example, in 1955, the house served as one of the locations for Tennessee William's Oscar-winning film 'The Rose Tattoo'. Architecturally, this building exemplifies the unique style of Dade County Pine 'Post and Beam' construction found in historic Key West homes. The house interior blends wicker, mahogany and teak furnishings to provide an historic Key West 'feel.'
In 1999, the Golden Heron was awarded a Gold Star by the Old Island Restoration Foundation. It was one of 5 homes selected on the island, and over 1100 people toured the property. It was also selected as a showcase Key West home in the 2007 House and Garden Tour.
With its 11 foot high ceilings, Dade County Pine, beautiful mahogany doors and shutters, a multitude of glass doors and windows designed to admit maximum light while minimizing heat, and wrap around overhang for the sidewalks, the property allows you to experience what Key West living must have been like in bygone eras (only now with the help of central air-conditioning and roughly 20 ceiling fans). The brand new, in-ground pool and spa heats to 104 degrees and boasts a 14' wide waterfall with grotto. The lanai features beautiful Brazilian teak decking and the gourmet kitchen features a subzero refrigerator, Wolf stove, Bosch dishwasher and Dacor microwave with Uba Tuba granite and solid cherry cabinetry.
The main house consists of 4 bedrooms (3 with king size beds, one with a queen size bed) plus a full size new sofa sleeper. 2 full baths and two half baths, plus a large 1 bedroom 1 bath guest apartment (with king size bed and kitchenette) which can be joined into the main house (offering 6 total beds).
Note: Under current local law, we are limited to one rental per 30 days (30 night lease).
I stayed at the Golden Heron and thoroughly enjoyed every aspect! I've been a real estate broker/investor for over 20 years...I am not easily impressed and indeed I was impressed! The unique design, high quality renovation and sanctuary feel made me want to live there permanently! Great location as you can walk to Duval Street, the swimming pool in the backyard had jets and a water fall, right outside the gorgeous kitchen....you won't find anything like this at a hotel!! And finally, the owner was a very nice to work with!
I stayed at the Golden Heron for the first time and let me tell you this house is AMAZING!!!! It has everything you could possibly want and much, much more!!!! This house is so unique (even has an open living room space) and has been remodeled with many nice upgrades. It has the true Key West charm and for a handful of days, I actually felt like a local. Aside from never wanting to leave the house, the walk to Duval street is less than a mile and if you are looking for local restaurants, you don't have to stray too far. Local cuisines are about a block away. I would most definitely stay at the golden heron again. Do not pass up this opportunity to get a true Key West feel!
i stayed at the golden heron for the 4th or 5th time now, each time i hate to leave……the house is over 100 years old and shows all of its dade county post and beam construction, but has been nicely remodeled in so many ways…..hand painted walls and ceilings, mahogany doors with etched glass, high ceilings….beautiful partially covered lanai, beautiful back yard and pool….love the grotto and the jets….beautiful vegetation and bougainvillea…..a great historical house in a great location, close to everything in Old Town…..
We found management easy to work with, and the property even better than the photos show. It's hard to realize how huge this place is, but you won't be disappointed. The location is great, after we arrived, we parked the car, and rode bikes the rest of the time. Eaton bikes is a great place to rent, and they pick up and deliver! The patio area is like a little paradise, and we spent a lot of time there and never got tired of it. Enjoy!
