My wife and I LOVE the location! We originally purchased this property as a downtown location for our college age children. We were looking for a property directly on Forsyth Park, a large city park that occupies 30 acres.
Forsyth is Savannah's own Central Park and the site of numerous year-round festivites and events. The convenience of the property to Forsyth Park cannot be overstated. This is an ideal location for weddings in the park. Its wonderful to see the joggers, soccer games, ultimate frisbee and other outdoor activities associated to a large green space. It is within eash walking distance to local restuarants and attractions.
Come create or view chalk art masterpieces on the sidewalks of Forsyth Park during SCAD's annual Sidewalk Arts Festival. The popular event, free and open to the public, features a chalk art competition, children's drawing areas for young artists, and food, drinks and music. Next event 4/27/2013.
Forsyth Park is a 30 acre green space located in downtown Savannah. It was originally created in the 1840s on 10 acres of land donated by William Hodgson. In 1851, the park was expanded and named for Georgia Governor John Forsyth. By 1853, all original planned wards of Savannah were occupied and a large public park was added to the extreme south end of the city plan. This park was anticipated by General James Oglethorpe's plan and was made possible by a donation of 20 acres of land owned by Forsyth.
The fountain at the north end of Forsyth Park was added in 1858 and is reminiscent of fountains in the Place de la Concorde in Paris and in Cuzco, Peru. At this time, Parisian urban planning was centered on the development of residential neighborhoods radiating out from a central green space. The Parisian model of developing large city parks was emulated by large cities in the United States, with even smaller cities, such as Savannah, asserting their own cosmopolitan image.
Every St.Patricks Day the fountain is ceremoniously turned green in celebration of the Savannah's deep Irish heritage.
