County Clare House Rental Photos and Description

House, 5 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 3 Baths, (Sleeps 8-10)

Luxurious house, situated two hours from Kerry, one hour from Galway, 40 mins from The Burren, 45 minutes from Shannon Airport and 500m from the beautiful, award winning village of Mountshannon, this property is truly a special find - ideal for touring the southwest of Ireland as well as being just 2.5 hours from Dublin.

The local area is well known for golfing, fishing, hiking and water-sports, and hosts one of the most successful Arts festivals in Ireland. Music is available in local pubs in season, and there are several good restaurants nearby.

The house is an architect designed high quality detached home - set on 1.5 acres , with 180 degree views over Lough Derg and the Tipperary Hills. It is designed to take full advantage of the views, and is a warm home - timber framed with zoned central heating and wood burning stoves . The ceilings are higher than standard, giving a bright airy feel to the home. Accommodation comprises the following:

A large kitchen/living-room/dining-room is at the centre of this home, with southerly aspect, and magnificent views of the lake. This space has a sound system with built in speakers . A three metre square roof window makes this a particularly bright space. The room is adjoined by a living-room with TV - which also has a wood-burning stove. The two bedrooms at the west of the property are en-suite with patios, whilst the two to the east share a Diner-style living-room, with a bathroom. There is also a double bedroom with magnificent views over the lake and mountains.

Outside, there are extensive patio and decked areas - ideal for lounging or dining al fresco. The home is set on 1.5 acres , and has several vegetable plots and a greenhouse which guests are welcome to use in season. Many guests have cancelled touring plans, preferring to use the space for a stay-cation - especially those who are enjoying family reunion visits.

The East Clare way walking route ( easy to moderate) passes by, and the area is a particularly restful place, with forests, bog-land walks and beautiful unspoiled views over the mountains and lake. Attractions include Holy Island - accessible by a short boat trip available from the harbor - it is one of the earliest Monastic settlements in Ireland (500AD).

There are several restaurants and local pubs full of atmosphere and charm.

Access to garden herbs and vegetables (in season) is provided for guests. The calendar is updated regularly, but the property is sometimes provisionally booked by friends/family, so always contact us for cancellations.

Keywords: Large luxurious residence, ideally located for touring West and Southwest. Less than one hour day -trip to southwest destinations, like Galway, The Burren, The Cliffs of Moher

About Mary O'Keeffe

Hiking, cooking, gardening, history, literature, art, music, sailing, cycling and travel are some of our interests.

Mary O'Keeffe purchased this house in 2005

Why Mary O'Keeffe chose County Clare

Mountshannon is one of the prettiest villages in Ireland, once won the coveted overall Tidy Towns prize, and always features at the top end of this National competition for beautiful places. Overlooking the harbour, and enjoying a wonderful vista of Lough Derg lake and the Tipperary Hills, the setting is spectacular. Great walking, cycling, sailing, fishing, golf and other leisure activities are available locally. One of the oldest monastic settlements in Ireland is on our doorstep, and the village also has excellent cafes, pubs and restaurants. The white-tailed eagles nest in Bushy Island which is visible from the property, so bring your binoculars to spot this rare bird nesting in Ireland for the first time in 150 years.

What makes this house unique

Enjoy the spectacular views while enjoying fresh salads from the garden on the patio. Watch the boats come and go in the harbour below the dining area. Walk the East Clare Way in the hills on your doorstep. Take a boat trip to Holy Island and experience 1,500 years of history. Take several day trips to The Cliffs of Moher, The Burren, The Alwee Caves, Galway, Bunratty Castle.

What a find!

  • 5 of 5

For the past 15 years we (a group of 4 couples) rent a home to spend a week together. We have not before experienced somewhere like this place. To look at the photos it seems good, but in real life it is much better. The living space is large and open, and more a hotel than house! The hosts are helpful but not intrusive. The maintenance of the place is spotless, and it's very functional.

The location was great. We got to play golf at Adare, made a trip Galway and to the Cliffs of Moher, to Killarney, and explored local walks too. We bought fresh food at the Saturday morning market in the village, and ate super pizza nearby too. There is a beautiful park in the village, with adult gym equipment that kept some of us feeling fit! We ate out in some nice places- and too much Guinness, and a friendly bar owner in Mc Namara’s in Scarriff was memorable! We also cooked in using the well-equipped kitchen, herbs from the garden and the big wood stove was great for evening. Definitely we will be back!

House with soul for human souls

  • 5 of 5

The house: Generous in the place, fantastic with the sea view, unusual with the visit of rabbits and deer, charming with salad and vegetables from the garden, best functionality of fireplace & heating, kitchen & hi-fi Equipments

The lessor: Making feeling good, correctly, uncomplicatedly, transparently, unobtrusively, helpfully, concernedly about your smooth and well feeling

The surroundings: Cosy quiet without neighbours, embellished Pubs with fine food, good purchase possibilities of food, fresh vegetables & fruit, wine & biological cheese, woods walks without people-but with twitters of birds, boat driving possibilities

The excursion locations: Movement seduction by trekking and riding embellishes, charming towns for shopping and strolling with flair like Limerick & Galway, interesting

nose ideas in the perfumery in the Burren, wonderful nature view at the west coast

All over all:

For what you hope in the front - you prove as totally right afterwards

Exceeded All Of Our Expectations (and we had a lot of them)

  • 5 of 5

There were, give or take, around 10 vacationers in our group, including 4 children. Each one was blown away by this holiday home and the little town of Mountshannon. For starters, the home could not be cleaner or more comfortably furnished. It provided some much appreciated separation of gathering rooms so that we were not forced to be together at all times. The views of Lough Derg from the windows and the back decks were sensational. The lush, grassy backyard, which comes with a huge boulder just right for daring jumps, was used for soccer, races, tag, wrestling and, of course, boulder leaps. The walk to town was very pleasant and took about 25 minutes, but that was with youngsters meandering along the way. By the way, there were two routes to take for a little variation. The surprise hit of the stay was the magnificent downtown park (about 3.5 acres) which ran from the main street to the shores of Lough Derg. It was difficult to drag our kids out of the place. They even joined a cricket match one evening. Also, we made friends with two donkeys who were on the very outskirts of the town. On the one occasion when we foolishly tried to walk past them on the opposite side of the road, we were loudly called over by one of the donkeys who, apparently, needed a few more pets. We enjoyed a number of day trips to nearby towns and festivals. Scariff and Killaloe saw our smiling faces more than once. The cruise of the lake from Killaloe-Ballina was a real treat. As was the dinner at Bunratty Castle. The restaurants and pubs in Mountshannon and nearby were delightful. A small deli was also one of our favorites as was a charming Italian restaurant. We could not have designed a better home base in the eastern half of County Clare. Thank you, Mary, for working so diligently to make our Irish holiday possible.

Owner's Response: Thanks for sharing this wonderful experience Bob - we always forget the small things ( big things actually to guests) like the wonderful park. They have just installed adult gym equipment there - fantastic idea, with views over the lakes as you work out! Hope to see you all again soon.

Great for large families

  • 5 of 5

The Mount Shannon house met all our needs for a family of ten. The house was very large so that everyone had his own space. The view is spectacular and we spent a lot of time outside on the deck. The kitchen is very well equipped and was big enough for several people to work at a time. It was wonderful to have a separate laundry room complete with drying racks and sink. I highly recommend this house.

Amazing stay!

  • 5 of 5

Our party (4 children and 7 adults) stayed 12-19 July, 2014 and couldn't have been happier. The location was convenient for many day trips, the town was a short drive (5 min) or walk (10 min down a steep, one-lane unpaved road- not suitable for small children to walk IMO), and parks, trails and a small marina were all very close. The house layout is perfect and provides privacy and communal living all in one, and all of the pictures accurately depict the house. Our children loved the huge yard and the many toys and books provided by the owners. In fact, our children always wanted to "go home" during every day trip just to play and run at the house!

Everything was clean and well-kept, and the owners were very informative and hospitable both during the booking process and our time in Ireland.

We had somewhat of a difficult time learning how to operate all of the European appliances, but we made do. However, I would recommend requesting a quick overview on how to operate everything.

Our stay was perfect and we wholeheartedly recommend this property to everyone- we would definitely stay again!

fabulous 50th

  • 5 of 5

We celebrated our 50th anniversary in style here with our family of 10. The house was perfect. Exactly as billed - roomy and easy to be in with beautiful views. The yard was a great place for our toddlers to burn off some energy. The owner even brought over a lovely fruit tart one day which we all enjoyed.

The town itself was terrific as well. We enjoyed the sweet little swimming beach, the maze and the labyrinth.Local businesses were wonderful. The Snug provided delicious takeaway pizza and salad for our party of 20 people. Our friends stayed at the Mountshannon Hotel where they were well taken care of. The manager even found a local bakery to make a special event cake for us.

We enjoyed several good day trips from here - Craggaunowen, Doolin cave, a boat trip to the cliffs of Moher, Gort, Galway, Knappogue Castle and Killaloe.

The property is ideally located for touring the south-west of Ireland. Day trips to The Cliffs of Moher, Bunratty Castle, The Burren, golf and surfing at Laninch, Galway and Connemara are all within easy reach. Locally, there are boats for hire to explore the lake, and boat trips to the earliest monastic settlement at Holy Island. There are several parks and walking routes, and a children's playground. There is also horse-riding, music and great pubs and restaurants. There is a great fishing service with fully equipped boats - and the area is renowned for pike fishing (Sept- March).
