About the immediate neighbourhood of the apartment: In 1658 Cardinal Mazarin ordered to construct a connection between Porte Saint-Antoine and Château de Vincennes. Cours de Vincennes was born. It is the pompous avenue of eastern Paris, 84 m broad. Place de la Nation, formerly Place du Trône, planned as counterpart to Place de l’Etoile has a diameter of 250 m. In 1660 here was constructed a huge throne where Louis XIV received the homage of the people of Paris. In 1794 the guillotine worked very hard on this place with about 1300 executions. Behind the nearby monastery 35, rue de Picpus (today memorial place) the victims were hastily buried. Today it is a place of memory. The 2 columns, the monumental guard-houses and the accompanying historical buildings are rests of the big customs wall around Paris. Before the French revolution the king leased for a fixed sum the custom revenues to leaseholders. Place de la Nation is today decorated with monumental sculptures of the artist Dalou representing the French Republic.
