We totally fell in love with this cosy Vermont home that is full of charm and character. We were lucky to have good weather and could enjoy breakfasts on the porch or by the stream. Arlington is a short walk away and is surrounded by gorgeous areas, between beautiful, historic Bennington and Manchester. There walked and hiked all around the area, towards covered bridges and lakes, and loved it all. We visited many places in the fall, but no other place was quite like this house in Arlington. It really felt like home. It was quiet, intimate, furnished with taste and practical intentions, very comfortable and close to a town that had everything we needed.

Family getaway

This house was perfect for our family, with awesome skiing at Bromley only about 20 minutes away and great shopping and activities in nearby Manchester. Although situated on a main road, you would never know it with the beautiful view of the Battenkill River from most of the windows in the house. We curled up next to the vintage wood stove every night, which provided a nice atmosphere and lots of warmth for board games and movies in the family room. The kitchen is great for making meals and having a glass of wine after skiing. Overall, we had a really nice family getaway at this quaint little home.

Recommended for: Families with Teenagers, Families with Young Children

Great time on the Battenkill!

This home provided for a great vacation for our family! If you like kayaking, fishing and the scenery & sounds that the river provides, you can't beat the location. I caught my first wild Brook Trout and some Brown Trout too right out front fly fishing. My son also enjoyed the fishing. We kayaked from an access point 2 miles upstream back to the house. Nearby Emerald lake was also a beautiful place to spend a day. Manchester and other towns aren't far away for shopping, restaurants and entertainment. We spent one day exploring the many antique shops in the area. The house was comfortable and well laid out. Overall a great vacation!

Beautiful, scenic, serene

We had a lovely stay. The house is indeed right on the Battenkill river. We ate every meal at the outdoor table sitting right in front of the water. It was nice that the property was so private. Leaving the windows open at night gave us a pleasant, cool breeze and the calming sound of the water running down the river.
The only thing I would have wished for was a higher water level on the river so that we could kayak, but I'm pretty sure the property owner has no control over that. Instead, there were plenty of lakes in the area where we were able to enjoy our kayak.

Owner's Response: The water level of the BattenKill varies everyday. It can get low in July and August if it gets hot and there is no rain for a few days. But that combination is rare, and one rainfall brings the level back. In my 6 years of owning this house I have never seen it un-passable. I did have to walk on a few stones in the summer but just a few minutes. I love kayaking that is why I bought that house. I know that if you want to enjoy a ride down stream, this is a dream location. By the way, the River can be very fast in the spring or after a heavy rain.

Charming River House

This house has the best access to the Battenkill of any house I've seen in the area. Just walk out the back door and there it is in all its glory, sparkling like a million diamonds. The entire back of the house caters to the water view. There are tables for eating down by the water, and comfy chairs for relaxing.

There are many lovely drives and walks in this area. Drive up the toll road to the top of Equinox Mtn......walk around Lake Shaftsbury, or just walk out the door and cross the bridge into "town" or to the little park.

There's also some good antiquing in East Arlington.....the shop in the old train station is supposedly haunted.

We spent time there in the winter and enjoyed the accessibility to everything in the area. The house was warm and cozy....we loved building a fire, and cooking in. There were no scary unplowed hills to traverse if we decided to drive out in the snow. Easy in, easy out. And it's only 30 minutes to skiing if you desire.

In the spring we saw the perennials waking up....the lilacs, peonies, lilies and roses. And just down the road at The Sugar Shack the maple syrup was boiling. We stopped in and had free warm samples.

We just visited this summer and got to see everything in full bloom. So green and lush! From our access in the backyard we kayaked to the Red Covered Bridge by Norman Rockwell's house. Oh so Very Vermont!!!

Good location...15 minutes to Manchester (Outlets, of course. But best of all, there's a Great bookstore and cafe there.) 15 minutes to Bennington (Go up into the Obelisk...great views). Check out the authentic general store on 313W near Sandgate.....and in the summer make sure to shop at ClearBrook Farms just down the road in Shaftsbury....amazingly fresh local foods.

Three out of four seasons we have enjoyed all this place has to offer. We haven't seen it yet in the fall, but hey, it's Vermont. It will be gorgeous!

The house itself is sweet and comfortable....and very well outfitted.
The owner is great to deal with.
