About Russell Alway

My wife and I have been vacationing at Priest Lake for nearly 15 years. For several year's we rented a cabin at Hill's Resort and enjoyed it, but really wanted to have more space and privacy, so a few years ago we began to rent homes on the lake. As we got to know more about the lake we fell in love with Cavanaugh Bay. When our cabin became available to purchase in 2010 we jumped on it and will never look back. Since it is impossible for us to be here all summer, however, we want to share our beautiful cabin with others. We are confident that you will enjoy the comfort and beauty of our lakeside retreat as much as we do.

Russell Alway purchased this cabin in 2010

Why Russell Alway chose Priest Lake

Priest Lake is rightfully known as Idaho's Crown Jewel. The water is crystal clear and the lake is enormous, so there are lots of places to go and coves and islands to explore. The fishing is good, the boating is outstanding and the skiing and boarding is awesome. Cavanaugh Bay is a special place. The waters here are the quietest on the lake. Our neighbors are fantastic and the majority of them do not rent so we want to make sure that our renters respect them and the 11 pm rule. For the most part you can hear a pin drop after 11pm. You can sit outside and be amazed at the night sky full of zillions of bright stars, listen to the swish of the water on the beach, the hooting of the owls and the beating of each others hearts as you snuggle under the moonlight. You can't beat it!

What makes this cabin unique

We love this cabin because it gives us the ideal spot to relax, soak up the sun, swim, and totally forget the workaday world. We are avid hikers and their are hundreds of nearby trails surrounding the lake. These include many with little or slight elevation gains and some that are strenuous and challenging. If you like waterfalls and photography like we do, this is a heavenly place to be. In the winter there are hundreds of miles of snowshoeing, snowmobile and cross country skiing trails which offer incredible views of mountains and lakes. When we want to get out we have only a ten minute walk to Cavanaugh Bay Resort or a fifteen minute boat ride to several other resorts who also have fine dining and live entertainment in the summer months.

Priest Lake Family reunion

  • 2 of 5

The house was attractive and the location was as described. The fotos of the amenities such as furniture did not reflect the condition we found. The beds were made but the property was not clean or neat. There were dirty dishes in the dishwasher which we discovered after preparing our own dinner. There was trash on the porch, the deck furniture was covered in debris and out of place, the living room rug was rolled up and standing against the TV Cabinet. There was dust on the platform where the wood stove stood. The kitchen counters were clean but the drawers were not. The only updated appliance was a washer dryer the rest worked except the refrigerator which was not cooling when we arrived. The owner was responsive in our prior dealings including making an effort to send a repair man for the refrigerator. We unplugged it to reset it and it starting working. We arrived with 10 guests, the maximum permitted but there were linens for 9 persons and 9 towels, one each for the week. I brought extra towels and left them at the property clean and folded. We called the owner to ask for bed linens and he promptly sent one of the cleaning ladies. She provided the linens but no pillows or pillowcases. She apparently told the owner that we had violated the permitted number of guests. We signed up 10 guests and we had 10 guest for 3 days and then we had 9 for the rest of the week. The house can sleep 10 but with only 2 bathrooms it is not advisable. The best mattress was in the master bedroom.

Unfortunately one of our children forced the screen door shut and broke the hydraulic support. I asked the cleaning ladies who arrived before we vacated the premise to report the damage and to let the owner know we took full responsibility for the damage. We gave them a $40.00 tip and apologized for our tardiness in leaving. The beds were stripped, the towels washed and dried and back in the closet, the dish washer was washing the dishes and the refrigerator was clean and the trash gathered up and in the car ready to be taken to the dump. I quickly took a shower before departing. I had been working since 6:30am and was still in my nightgown with a long sleeved blouse over the top. The owner told me that the cleaning lady said I was running around naked all morning. The owner charged us $67.00 for the screen door, and $50.00 for late departure. He refunded the difference on Sept. 9. We enjoyed our Blue Diamond Ski Boat and being on Cavanaugh Bay. We love the lake!

Owner's Response: After years of wonderful experiences with guests at our cabin, I was shocked and disappointed with this review. When I received the call that the refrigerator was not working, I immediately called for service. It was determined that the refrigerator door had been left open. I sent the cleaning lady with more towels and sheets. She told me afterwards that she had counted three adult females and nine teenagers for a total of twelve people. When the cleaning lady arrived at 10am on the day of departure she said she found all of the guests still at the cabin. They did not leave until 12:30pm. I did charge the lady for the repair to the front door and a late departure fee of $50, since she admitted to these. Damage to the furniture, our missing row boat, and removal of trash from the deck were not charged to the guest because she denied responsibility. The renter told me she has been coming to Priest Lake for years, but has yet to find suitable accommodations. I wish her well in her quest.

Amazing Lake Home!

  • 5 of 5

My husband I just returned from a bliss filled 2 weeks at this amazing home on Priest Lake. the location of this cabin can't be beat ~ minutes from Cavenaugh's you can have a fantastic meal and listen to live music. We have both traveled to Priest Lake any time we had the opportunity since we were children and would place this home, location and experience at the top of our list of best vacations.

The cabin is very well appointed with an updated kitchen, comfortable living room and spacious bedrooms. The deck surrounding the cabin is a welcome break from sitting in the direct sun and a great place to relax & read a book. We spent most of our time enjoying the large dock and beach area in front of the house. There are a number of chairs and lounge chairs available.

The only recommendation I have for future travelers is to bring a few extra fans. We were there when it was over 90 degrees every single day. While there are a couple of fans available in the cabin, if you are like us, you will want to have a couple extras to help cool things down in the evening.

Thank you for our wonderful vacation Russ and Patty! We loved it!

P.S. to future travelers ~ no need to bring any extra movies for the evenings, there is a massive movie library with something to please everyone from kids to adults!

Owner's Response: Anna and Jeff, Thanks so much for your kind words. Patty and I want every guest to enjoy being at the lake as much as we and you do. We appreciate your suggesting more fans. I will buy them and take them over next week as we will be there for our annual get together with our adult children and their families. The memories we are building at the lake are priceless gifts for us all. Russ and Patty

The house was wonderful. Our family totally enjoyed our experience. My only suggestion

Is to upgrade beds in two bedrooms on second floor(the master bedroom bed was great)

Wonderful Week at Cavanaugh Bay

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a fantastic time at the Alway's lakefront home. It was everything claimed to be and would definitely recommend to anyone wanting a clean, spacious place to stay while visiting this exquisite lake. Views of the lake from the large windows upstairs and down were amazing. The large deck was a great place to hang after barbequing some dinner and watch the sunset. Our three kids spent most of the their time swimming off the dock when they weren't tubing in the bay. Cavanaugh's is always a treat as we boated over there a couple times. Thank you Russ and Patty for sharing your wonderful space with us and we look forward to coming back again !! and again...

Great Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We traveled to Priest Lake from the mountains of Colorado with our 5 children ages 10-23. It is sometimes difficult to find a place which appeals to the various ages and interests of our large family. The Alway's cabin on Priest Lake was the perfect destination. There was plenty of personal space for everyone in the four bedrooms and the roomy living area was great for congregating in the evenings. I could spend hours gazing out the floor to ceiling windows at the gorgeous view. The best part, though, was the chance to spend many hours outdoors in this "jewel" of a place. The hiking and exploring possibilities were endless. The beautiful Priest Lake Golf Course was 20 minutes away, watching the sunset from the deck at Cavanaugh's was spectacular and dinner at Hill's Resort was a special treat at the end of our stay. Unlike Colorado, the water in Priest Lake was warm and pleasant. We swam off the dock and enjoyed roasting s'mores in the fire pit on the beach until late in the evening. One caution: good knees for stair climbing are a must. All in all, I would definitely recommend this cabin.

Owner's Response: Patty and myself love our cabin, the lake, and the numerous outdoor activities in the Priest Lake area. Nothing could be more rewarding than hearing that wonderful families like this have experienced the joy that we share with our own children while playing together at the lake.

Cavanaugh Bay Memories

  • 5 of 5

Our family has spent 20+ years vacationing at Cavanaugh Bay on Priest Lake, Idaho. Unfortunately our favorite place to stay has become too small with our growing family. How lucky were we to find this wonderful bayside home.

The pictures do not do justice to this immaculate, tastefully decorated home. The kitchen was well stocked with top of the line cookware and utensils. The refrigerator was large and the ice trays full All the needs for large group were here, with lots of room to dine inside with it's a large dining table and bar or outside on the large deck with it's own large umbrella table and chairs and stainless steel BBQ.

The four bedrooms were roomy and tastefully decorated, two with outstanding views of the lake though floor to ceiling windows. The master bedroom was large with a ceiling fan and a well appointed master bath. Up stairs included a washer and dryer, and we found a well stocked video library as well as many games and books.

The dock area was roomy with plenty of chairs and loungers to enjoy the sun and views or to swim in the crystal clear waters of the lake. This home also had a large beach area and fire pit to enjoy and spread out as well.

Through out the years our family has enjoyed many trips up to Hunt Lake or just laying out on the dock, enjoy the sun, watching the small planes come in for an approach to land at the near by Cavanaugh Bay landing strip. One year our kids were able to watch helicopters hover over the bay, lowering big buckets for water to spread over fires that were in the nearby mountain areas. We were never in any danger but it was pretty exciting for the kids to watch.

The owner was very helpful when we had questions or concerns before our stay as well as during. This is a wonderful, magical place and I would not hesitate to recommend this home to any of our friends or relatives. It is a good choice for a multi generational family get together.

We have already made our plans to stay again next year.
