This waterfront property vacation rental is located in Wauna, a small waterfront community on Henderson Bay. A charming Northwest artist cabin with a separate guest house nestled in a small community of nine beach houses. The front door of the main house is literally ten paces from the private beach where twice a day the tide reaches the stone bulkhead and covers the steps to the beach. Only 6 minutes from the heart of Gig Harbor and 45 minutes south of Seattle.
The construction of the houses dates back to the early 1900's. In 1989 both buildings were completely renovated by the owner, an industrial designer/artist who owns an architectural firm in San Francisco, preserving the original character of the property including fir and slate floors throughout with driftwood stair railings and sand blasted wood paneling.
The main house is built on two levels and enjoys spectacular panoramic views of Henderson Bay and Carr Inlet. The open beamed living area with a river rock fireplace and comfortable seating is great for reading a book from the wall library above or simply enjoying the ambiance of the sea and beach.
The dining room with it's copper ceiling, has a French Cooking Oven for wood fired breads and pizza. (A French Quebec cook book is provided with recipes for making bread the old fashioned way). Cured firewood is provided for your use.
The modern kitchen has a grill and prep area that is linked to the dining area by small bar with counter seating. The open floor plan is great for entertaining. There are two bedrooms, two bathrooms with claw foot tubs and an office facing the terraced garden in the main house. The library, laundry and mud sink are in the main house as well.
A separate unattached guest house, or cabana, has one bedroom and one bathroom. It also houses a custom made Finnish wood burning sauna with running water (bucket provided) which looking out on the Bay. A charming stone and moss path leads to the main house and beach.
Activities outside your front door include beachcombing for shells and seaglass, and for the more adventurous digging for geoducks at minus tide, fishing for salmon (bouy provided) or simply watching the sea at sunrise and sunset. Keep an eye out for the errant killer whales that stray into Burley Lagoon during their migration.
For the gourmet inclined, walk or drive along the ½ mile sandspit to Purdy where you will find the Tacoma Boys Farmers outdoor market to pick up fresh local fruits and vegetables, select fresh meat for the barbeque from Ray’s Meat Market or pick up the catch of the day, crabs or oysters from Winks seafood pick up truck. If cooking isn’t your thing, eat at Massimo’s Italian Restaurant at the end of the spit; Italian food and sauces prepared only as Massimo does it. If Massimo’s is too formal, try the Floatation Device, the local biker bar for breakfast and live music on the weekends.
For those guests who need to check email or surf the web, the house has high-speed internet access with a router in the office. The living room has a small television with basic cable a DVD player. The stereo/radio/CD player are above in the library walkway.
A private collection of original artwork and crafts, like the house itself, is an idiosyncratic mix of the modern and antique, spanning styles from a small Buddhist shrine, Balinese and Diori masks to modern works by Sklar, and Kent.
Along with the art work, the house also has unique craft touches such as the Japanese antique tea kettle suspended from the rafters above the fireplace, a New Guinea ceremonial food boat suspended from the beams.
