3 BR WATERFRONT PANORAMIC VIEW LOW BANK HOME

Gig Harbor House Rental Photos and Description

House, 3 Bedrooms + Detached Unit, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

This waterfront property vacation rental is located in Wauna, a small waterfront community on Henderson Bay. A charming Northwest artist cabin with a separate guest house nestled in a small community of nine beach houses. The front door of the main house is literally ten paces from the private beach where twice a day the tide reaches the stone bulkhead and covers the steps to the beach. Only 6 minutes from the heart of Gig Harbor and 45 minutes south of Seattle.

The construction of the houses dates back to the early 1900's. In 1989 both buildings were completely renovated by the owner, an industrial designer/artist who owns an architectural firm in San Francisco, preserving the original character of the property including fir and slate floors throughout with driftwood stair railings and sand blasted wood paneling.

The main house is built on two levels and enjoys spectacular panoramic views of Henderson Bay and Carr Inlet. The open beamed living area with a river rock fireplace and comfortable seating is great for reading a book from the wall library above or simply enjoying the ambiance of the sea and beach.

The dining room with it's copper ceiling, has a French Cooking Oven for wood fired breads and pizza. (A French Quebec cook book is provided with recipes for making bread the old fashioned way). Cured firewood is provided for your use.

The modern kitchen has a grill and prep area that is linked to the dining area by small bar with counter seating. The open floor plan is great for entertaining. There are two bedrooms, two bathrooms with claw foot tubs and an office facing the terraced garden in the main house. The library, laundry and mud sink are in the main house as well.

A separate unattached guest house, or cabana, has one bedroom and one bathroom. It also houses a custom made Finnish wood burning sauna with running water (bucket provided) which looking out on the Bay. A charming stone and moss path leads to the main house and beach.

Activities outside your front door include beachcombing for shells and seaglass, and for the more adventurous digging for geoducks at minus tide, fishing for salmon (bouy provided) or simply watching the sea at sunrise and sunset. Keep an eye out for the errant killer whales that stray into Burley Lagoon during their migration.

For the gourmet inclined, walk or drive along the ½ mile sandspit to Purdy where you will find the Tacoma Boys Farmers outdoor market to pick up fresh local fruits and vegetables, select fresh meat for the barbeque from Ray’s Meat Market or pick up the catch of the day, crabs or oysters from Winks seafood pick up truck. If cooking isn’t your thing, eat at Massimo’s Italian Restaurant at the end of the spit; Italian food and sauces prepared only as Massimo does it. If Massimo’s is too formal, try the Floatation Device, the local biker bar for breakfast and live music on the weekends.

For those guests who need to check email or surf the web, the house has high-speed internet access with a router in the office. The living room has a small television with basic cable a DVD player. The stereo/radio/CD player are above in the library walkway.

A private collection of original artwork and crafts, like the house itself, is an idiosyncratic mix of the modern and antique, spanning styles from a small Buddhist shrine, Balinese and Diori masks to modern works by Sklar, and Kent.

Along with the art work, the house also has unique craft touches such as the Japanese antique tea kettle suspended from the rafters above the fireplace, a New Guinea ceremonial food boat suspended from the beams.

Guestbook comments from the owner
"I have greatly enjoyed staying in your most delightful and character filled home, with the lovely view of the water. Your collection of crafts from around the world and the art are so very pleasing, that I feel I am right where I should be, surrounded by the same kinds of "things' that I treasure in my own home."

A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE

  • 5 of 5
The photos and description, although accurate, do not do justice to the cottage, cabana, and setting. It exceeded all our expectations. A couple of mornings we saw bald eagles at the very top of the large fir tree up toward the spit, and the morning before we left we watched an otter playing on and around a swim float in the bay. We found the kitchen wonderfully complete and convenient for cooking, which was important as we hosted up to 5 guests for dinner a couple of times during our stay. All our interactions with the owner and next-door caretaker were very responsive, straightforward and pleasant. There is a bit of the road noise mentioned elsewhere, but you are behind a fence, below the level of the road, so we found that if you were inside (even with windows open), or in the front (preferably stretched out on the sea wall looking for meteors), it was barely noticeable. We drove into Seattle and down to Mt. Rainier quite easily, and up the peninsula to Port Townsend is scenic and fun. Both nearby eateries, Massimo (Italian) and "The Float" (pub) are friendly and tasty. All in all, a very enjoyable experience!

BEAUTIFUL BEACH COTTAGE, INDEED!

  • 5 of 5
My husband & I rented this gorgeous cabin for 2 weeks (we use VRBO often in our travels). Wow, were we pleasantly surprised! We loved the decor, location of the home & the serenity of Henderson Bay. Being from the Puget Sound area, we have family & friends there. We had a family BBQ, it was magical. Our friends that came to visit also loved the property & we enjoyed trying out the wood burning pizza oven (we are hooked). It is obvious this is a well loved home, the owners truly captivated the charm of the 100 year old property & have restored it magnificintly . We highly recommend a stay here. If you have a water dog, they will love it too!!

NICE TO BE ON THE WATER BUT NOISY AND DEFINITELY NOT FOR THE VEGGIE MINDED

  • 4 of 5
I would not recommend this property to anyone with small children. My grandsons are 2 and 4 years. They loved playing on the beach, watching the tide but the home itself is a little dangerous for little ones (or older ones also). The railing on the stairs wobbles if you try to use it for support. Be mindful going up and down the stairs - they are a little steep, especially for small tots or older folks. A lot of knick-knacks that we put up to be out of the reach of little arms.
The home has animal skins used as rugs under the dining table and in the living room under the trunk/coffee table. A moose head is mounted on the wall above the living area next to 3 rifles. If you are veggie minded, you may find these offensive. We did not care for the skins and pulled them up and put them in the corner until we left and returned them to where they were when we arrived.
The dining chairs are not very sturdy nor the counter stools. The 4 wooden chairs that were in the cabana are better. Beds & linens are great. Laundry with soap came in very handy. Lots of nice towels.
The kitchen has just about everything you would need. The grill is outside - an old, small Weber kettle. No table so I used one of the wooden chairs for utensils. Lots of grill accessories so a larger grill would be a nice addition.
The worse thing about the property is the street noise. You are right on State Route 302. It goes on all day and most of the night. Backing out of the parking spot is tricky and walking on the street side with little ones not recommended unless you hold them close. Walking on the beach OK unless it's high tide but safer than street side. Trying to relax or sleep you hear cars whizzing by. Can't sleep with the window open. If you want total quiet, this is not the place for you. Few/sheer window coverings, none in cabana. Light + noise = not great for sleep.
We didn't use the sauna or wood burning oven but did visit Local Boys, Ray's (awesome meats) and Wink's (great albacore & king salmon). Target, Safeway, Starbucks 5-10 min away.
The one thing that would really improve the stay is an outside eating area. It was beautiful outside with no where to sit and there's room on the side of the house for a table/chairs. Some plastic cups and plates would also be handy for use outside.
Visit Port Orchard - a charming seaside village with a Saturday Farmer's Market. Fresh oysters, clams, fruit. Also ferry to Vashon and eat at the Hardware Store and go out to the Lighthouse.

BEAUTY AND TRANQUILITY

  • 5 of 5
This is an amazing place! The home is lovely, the garden is lovely, the view is lovely, the neighbors are lovely. Couldn't have asked for a more beautiful, relaxing, fun location for an anniversary/family vacation. The house is so full of charm and hidden treasures, is well maintained and very clean--we felt right at home in the cozy living room and fully equipped kitchen. The location is perfect for great day trips to Tacoma and Seattle, or just hanging around and exploring the beach on foot or by kayak. The Sound is ever-changing and mesmerizing.--totally enchanting. We started every morning with coffee on the bulkhead and walks out to the sand-dollar beds (bring shoes you can wear into the water--the beach and the shore are rocky.) Spent the days playing and sight-seeing and eating--great restaurants in Gig Harbor (especially the Tides Tavern and Anthony's)! We thoroughly enjoyed chatting with the neighbors and watching the sky change colors in the evenings. And then there's the sauna...amazing! We can't wait to come back!

BEACH HOUSE

  • 5 of 5
We lucked out. A house fire caused us to look for new accomodations during the summer of '11. Then we found the Beach House. This is the cutest house you'll ever see. We stayed 4+ months and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. The owner(s) pay attention to every detail, from the wood-fired pizza oven to the sauna to the claw foot bath tubs. The high tides, beach combing, bird activity and views are not to be missed. Just a teriffic house with Washingtom living at its finest. Definately 5-stars. Rick Randahl
