I'm a highly awarded Creative Director at a NY advertising agency. I've restored several houses and my specialty is set design. I've traveled extensively and have always had a particular love for innovative architecture and beautiful design in unique settings. I have had homes in the Hamptons, Connecticut and upstate NY. This house is my first venture in California. It has a lot of my personal acquisitions from years of travel and the art that I've collected while living in New York. This house was designed by a landscape architect. You can feel it in the garden spaces and in his attention to detail in the house. The bannisters were hand forged by a blacksmith for the house and give a rustic, yet elegant feel to the house.
It is the perfect combination a sophisticated open space plan found in many NY City lofts combined with a lovely rural setting. It's a wonderful place to spend time with my family and we all find it hard to leave Glen Ellen every time we visit.
Sonoma Valley Escapes, Sonoma, CA purchased this house in 2011
There are many beautiful places in the world, but I am always drawn back to the light and smells of the wine country. I have worked in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, South America and Europe and I always find myself comparing those countries and their cities to the parts of California that I love. I bought a house in this area because I grew up nearby. Glen Ellen still has a rural charm. The oak trees are old and the landscape is rough in parts and groomed in others. I love walking into town and people recognizing you and knowing your coffee order. It's peaceful, quiet, but close to everything. I eventually plan on moving back, but in the meantime I'd love that other people enjoy the space that I've created.
When I'm not here I spend time with my family ,and our dog Bearto, in New York City, Maine and upstate New York.
This property sits in it's own little ecosystem. It is cooler than the valley because it backs up to the mountains. Waking up to the light and the smells that fill the master bedroom on a sunny morning and the sounds of the birds in the garden is magical. When it's chilly, the fireplace goes on, and with a freshly brewed pot of coffee we settle in with the New York Times. During the spring and summer, the teak tables and chairs outside provide a perfect place to start the day. For us, the kitchen is a dream kitchen. It's gorgeous and has everything we need to cook, bake and entertain. At night sitting on the front porch with a glass of wine many friends say 'it doesn't get much better than this'. The gardens are lovely and my nieces and nephews play catch on the front lawn, or everyone can find their own space since the house is a wonderful 2600 ft. open concept plan.
Some of the family make trips to the beaches less than an hour away while others love exploring the exceptional wineries only minutes away. And when no one feels like driving there are two tasting rooms right up the street. There are movies nearby, the Sonoma Mission Inn and the Kenwood Inn and Spa are both only a few miles away. And two of my favorite restaurants in the area, 'The Fig Cafe' and 'Glen Ellen Star' are right up the street.
In our case that's rare. We had four generations at Dovetail Farm in Glen Ellen. It's a beautiful location and while it does not have a vineyard view it has an intimate privacy factor that is hard to explain. Maybe the gardens and so many spaces to settle into. There was a beautiful kitchen fully equipped for my wife and daughters to cook Easter Dinner in. The golf courses were close by for the son-in-laws and myself. And the girls did a bit of wine tasting on Saturday and had a massage at this very charming place called Magical massage in Glen Ellen– a unique spa experience in a gigantic wine barrel. The grounds are lovely and we ate most our meals outside. However the inside dining table saved the day on Sunday when it rained. Our group originally totaled 8 but since we are from the bay area we invited two other couples f to join us for Easter Dinner. Lovely, lovely house with a great open floor plan, separate bedrooms and so beautifully furnished. A perfect place for a family with so may generations coming together.
We will definitely do this again. Thank you so much for allowing us the use of your house. It really felt like home.

we stayed at this great house in early june and had a friends drive up from berkley to meet us there.
it couldnt of been a more wonderful place to stay. the kitchen is all upgraded and has all new appliances
it it also stocked with gourmet cookware, utensils for every need and plenty of dinnerware to accmmodate everyone. the bedrooms are great with great beds and wonderful linens.we sat on the pourch every evening with a glass of wine that overlooks their beautiful garden. there is a great gourmet store down the street and lots of charming restaurants close by. i cant wait to stay there again.
My mother, her brother, myself and my three cousins gathered for a small reunion at this house over Memorial Day. We couldn't have been happier. It was absolutely perfect. The house is beautifully furnished with comfy beds and lots of seating areas - and the gardens are lovely. Glen Ellen feels as if it is a magical little setting. We visited wineries, went to the Hog Island Oyster Company in Bolinas, went hiking in the two parks, both within five minutes from the house and cooked a few nights in the wonderful kitchen with a few friends we had invited from San Francisco. We also walked to the Fig Cafe for dinner one night and we found we could easily walk to the Glen Ellen market which had everything we needed. Imagery winery is just up the road as is Chataeu St. Jean and majority of the wineries. I have stayed in Sonoma before, but this was definitely more to my liking. We look forward to returning again. Oh yes, and the 3 girl cousins spent a lovely morning at the Sonoma Mission Inn which is about 10 minutes away.
My fiance and I rented this property for three days in February with several friends. We wanted to do something special since he works in Germany and was visiting for several weeks. He loves to cook so he walked into the house and immediately exclaimed "this is my dream kitchen". From there on things only got better. The house is furnished with lovely sheets and lovely furnishings. It's in a lovely setting close to town. We so enjoyed being in Glen Ellen, such a charming community. We hope to go back next year. By then the hot tub will be in.-
Dovetail Farm is the perfect location for Wine Country Touring, Cycling, and exploring the wonderful bounty that the Sonoma and Napa Valley have to offer. For lunch or dinner, try Ari Weiswasser's Glen Ellen Star. An alum of Picholine and Daniel in NYC and the French Laundry, the Glen Ellen Star is truly a taste of the surrounding countryside. Or try the Fig Cafe, always fabulous with a low key vibe. Both are only a 5 minute stroll away. Or drive to Olive and Vine or Aventine, a five minute car ride let's you enjoy Aventine's outside deck that overlooks the 164 acre Sonoma Valley Regional Park. Take a drive to the top of the hill to see Jack London State Park where Jack London lived and worked. It is a redwood paradise. Enjoy the Summer Evening Tuesday Farmer's Market in the Sonoma Plaza where locals and visitors bring friends, family, chairs, blankets, wine and more to enjoy the local vendors and musicians that provide entertainment.. There is also a wonderful country store called Glen Ellen Market that offers the best of California wines and cheeses and even highly acclaimed treats from the East Coast. It's our own Dean and DeLuca without the pretense.
Or just sit outside with your own bottle of wine and enjoy the garden and your friends. It doesn't often get better than that.
