The Old Summer House offers serenity and beauty in the country. It is located on a working farm that has been in Karen's family for four generations.
Quiet and restful get away in beautiful Lancaster County.
Terrific stay that our three young children truly enjoyed. The owners were wonderful and gladly accommodated our last minute arrival even thought they were away themselves. The kids had a blast on the carts and swing set and even took a dip in the pond! Looking out from the upstairs window says it all about the beauty and serenity of the farm and area. Thank you for a wonderful vacation!
We stayed here while other family was at grandma and grandpa's. The steep stairs made us a little nervous with small children, but everything else was wonderful. Our host provided a pack and play, the dog and cats and fireflies provided entertainment, and the setting was beautiful! All in all it was a great stay. We'd come back again.
We really enjoyed our stay here. The farm country is peaceful and incredibly beautiful, with farm stands, quaint shops, and ordinary grocery stores within easy reach. There are some truly unique architectural elements about the house, including exposed roof beams upstairs, that were really fun to see.
I would strongly recommend it for families traveling with kids. The dog and two cats were very friendly and with the swing set right outside, our children were infinitely happier running around in the fresh air than they would have been cooped up in a hotel room.
The kitchen was very comfortably and practically furnished, even including useful items like foil wrap, and the living area was comfortably spacious, including a table that actually seats four rather than having room for two to eat with four chairs crowded round it. The outdoor space is nice as well, and we loved that little iron table and chairs outside.
A few caveats: While recommending the place for kids, it does have stairs, so if yours are mobile but not used to stairs, it would be more challenging. The hot water heater is pretty small (adequate for about a 15 min shower before being completely empty) so, while there's adequate bedding for 4-6 adults, finding time for them all to shower in the morning if they all prefer to do so then might be a challenge. There was a massive storm one night resulting in a twelve-hour power outage and limited water due to lack of power to the pump. It didn't seem like that would be a frequent occurrence, but it might be wise to keep a pitcher of drinking water filled if there are storms expected. I also wouldn't recommend the place to people with severe allergies. There was a bit of old-house mustiness, especially under certain cupboards. It wasn't severe but by the time we left our allergic family had some sniffles.
All in all we really enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to others, and probably stay there again (definitely if not for the allergy issues).
Even through the pouring rain at our arrival, it was evident what a lovely location this is, and the following sunny morning revealed our first impression to be accurate. The house itself is warm & cozy with all the charm of yesteryear and the owners couldn't be more welcoming & eager to share their beautiful old family farm. The only glitch & not a big one, was we had understood from 3rd party info. that it was a bed & breakfast, which it is not.
Our 5 day stay at The Old Summer House exceeded all expectations. My husband and I and my son and his wife and their 4 year old son had plans to see many attractions near this area. The House was clean and comfortable and homey. My grandson did not want to leave the farm! Hershey, Strausburg, Sesame Place and the Crayola Factory are within about an hours drive or less. All of the information about the place is accurate and if we are ever back to that area we would definitely stay there again.
This was the first time we have stayed in the Lancaster area, and we just didn't know where to choose. Since we love Shady Maple, we picked this property. Our expectations were exceeded in all areas. My husband and I and our 2 children spent two nights here. The setting is absolutely lovely, yet close to anything you could want. It is quiet and beautiful. The accommodations are exactly as described in the listing and photos, very clean and comfortable. The breakfast provided by Karen is truly outstanding - homemade and absolutely delicious! The children are already asking to come back for another stay.
