LOVELY CLASSICALLY RESTORED 2BR VICTORIAN FLAT WITH GARAGE

Lower Haight Apartment Rental Photos and Description

Apartment, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-5)

Both the first and second floor flats of this 3 unit building are available for rent. The second and third floor units share an entrance into the house (the property manager lives on the third floor). Once inside, there is an additional locking door that enters the second floor flat. Each flat is a 1600 sq ft independent vacation home with 2 bedrooms, 1 Japanese tatami mat which serves as an extra single bed and 1 bathroom each.

Both first-floor and second floor are two bedroom flats in an original 1911 Edwardian house located in the center of San Francisco. Restored by the owner, the house has all the details of a classic turn-of-the-century San Francisco home, with all modern amenities.

The house is located between Duboce Park and the famous Alamo Square. Within walking distance are some of the city's greatest neighborhoods for exploring: the Castro, the Mission, Hayes Valley, the Fillmore and the Haight-Ashbury. Half a block away is lower Haight Street, filled with one of the city's most eclectic concentrations of unique cafes, pubs, restaurants and shops.

Public transportation is right outside the door to connect you to the entire city, and the MUNI is accessible in a two-block walk, from which you can easily access the Financial District, Union Square, the Embarcadero and North Beach.

These unique flats have original hardwood floors and parquet throughout, accented by brass fixtures. Towards the front of the house are the foyer, living room and dining room, which feature 12-foot ceilings and stained glass windows. Period details such as original molding, stained glass windows, and 25 pivoting windows throughout make this house a special find.

The black-tiled bathrooms feature both a claw foot tub and a marble shower, with a separate WC across the hall. The two comfortably appointed double bedrooms in each flat have bay windows, which get full sunlight from morning to midday. The linen closet is stocked with plenty of linens and towels.

The kitchen is fully equipped with stove, dishwasher, full-sized fridge with water filter, coffee maker, blender, cooking supplies, and cabinets stocked with necessities for cooking. There is a separate utilitarian prep kitchen with second sink and butcher block, by which you access the back stairs down to the backyard.

PRIVATE GARAGE INCLUDED: enclosed single-car garages adjacent to house are included with the rental at no additional charge. Take advantage of the safety and convenience of having your own garage, whether you are driving or renting a car during your stay. Be sure to specify if you will need the garage when you inquire.

Comments sent in from previous guests:

'We spent Thanksgiving week at the flat on Steiner this year with our family and had a great time. It's in a great location and convenient to lots of things. The parking spot in the garage is also nice, as parking is challenging in SF! We loved the flat itself - it's old and wonderful - comfortable beds and a good kitchen and dining room for a family to gather for meals. It served as a great home base from which to explore San Francisco. I'm glad we came here rather than spending a week in a small hotel room. We would love to be able to return in the future!'

-- The Grays from Texas

'This trip we wanted to avoid SF tourist areas and instead desired a neighborhood for our family vacation. The apartment is old and charming, with beautiful wood moldings, antiques, and large rooms. The kids found the space of a home and we loved the location. Parking on site was so helpful, but we often took the bus and trains and walked.'

-- Margaret Chapello, Hinsdale, IL

'We had a fantastic week in San Francisco! Our stay in your place was great - worked out perfect for us as a home away from home and a base for our stay.'

-- Vic Redding, Kailua, Hawaii

'Two friends and I just spent a week at the flat on Steiner Street. The location was perfect - convenient to bus lines, stores and restaurants. The apartment was roomy and comfortable. We would certainly return and recommend the accommodation to friends.'

-- Maryellen Cronin, Boxford, Massachusetts

'Just wanted to let you know how perfect our stay at the flat was! It was nice to be able to spread out into a big space instead of being cooped up in a hotel room. And the area was cool! There were a ton of great places to eat and it was so convenient to the MUNI. Thanks again for letting us stay. It could not have been better.'

-- Christina P., Largo, Florida

'This isn’t a bed and a room, it’s a home from home and an experience. Breakfast in the sun sitting at the kitchen bar or in the dining room - this is a cook’s kitchen and the supermarket is just down the road. You can plug in your laptop and stay ahead of your e-mail or run your business. At the end of the day, lie on the sofa listening to music or watching TV before turning in to sleep in peace and comfort. I’ll be back.'

-- Lesley Harwood, Wellington, New Zealand

'We loved every minute that we stayed in your wonderful home. It came with everything any family could want and more. Thank you for having it there for families to find, stay and enjoy San Francisco from, it was a great home base.'

-- The Stewart Family, Texas

'Our family has recently spent 5 nights at Steiner Street and the description given by its owner and the comments made by previous guests are an understatement. The apartment has everything one could think of to make a stay comfortable, not to mention the space. To be able to sit in the back yard on balmy evenings enjoying a glass or two of Californian red wine before walking less than 5 minutes to any one of a half a dozen reasonably priced restaurants was better than home. That is unless you decide to stay in and prepare a meal in the wonderfully appointed kitchen. There are even sharp cooking knives! Should we ever have the chance to return to San Francisco, we wouldn't stay anywhere else.'

-- Thracy Vinga and Family, Melbourne, Australia

Perfect

This was my second stay in this apartment/flat. As with my last stay, Ethan made sure everything was in order and patiently answered all of my questions. There are many things to see and do that have been carefully listed and organized into a binder for arriving guests. The home's personality and its proximity to so many shops, places to eat, and public transportation makes one feel immersed in a delightful part of the city. If there's a place to leave a little piece of your heart in exchange for memories of loving a city, it is here. I can't wait to go back.

Bang for your buck!

  • 5 of 5
This spacious, well equipped home is perfect for a family or 2-3 couples to share. The two bedrooms are located down a very long hallway, creating a large distance from the front of the house. Plus side to that, no street noise. Downside, if you have more that 2 children, there may be a sense of despair for the children left to sleep at the front of the house alone. We have 4 children and ended up using an air mattress in the living room. Two slept on the mattress and the other on the couch, and our toddler slept on a cot that fit nicely in the bedroom with us. That being said, you now know the living room is large enough for an air mattress. Also, the dining room table can be moved out of the dining room to the area between the living room and dining room, creating a 3rd bedroom. The dining room has pocket doors, so those staying in that room can have complete privacy. In the dining room is the small Japanese bed that is stated in the listing. A couple with a small child could use this room with an air mattress, then either a 2 child family or two separate couples could use the back bedrooms. The toilet is separate from the tub/shower room.
If arriving late in the evening, the house can seem quite eerie, especially because it's difficult to find the light switches. I suggest either letting Ethan know your ETA and ask him to turn the hall light on for you or flip the switch you find at the end of the entryway, then go through the dining room to the kitchen, turning on the lights along the way, then exit the kitchen into the hallway, the hall light switch is across from the kitchen door to the right a bit.
There is just 1 TV in the house, which is in the living room, and the wifi doesn't work well at the back of the house. The beds were ok. I suggested that they either invest in new mattresses or buy some toppers to make them more comfortable.
The kitchen has everything you need besides food and drink. There are even some spices, salt, and pepper. Don't be like me and forget the coffee! There is a coffee maker and a French press, also a microwave and toaster oven.
Overall, for the price, this was an excellent property for our stay. We drove our minivan and were able to use the garage. We stayed in the first floor flat, so we didn't have to battle many stairs after all of the walking we did through the city. We will definitely stay here again and will recommend this property to our friends!

A pleasant surprise

  • 5 of 5
Everything went exactly as promised. When we arrived, the flat was clean and very well equipped, the key in the lock box, and great instructions. We were joined by our daughter and her significant other, and the apt easily accommodated two couples. We even hosted a dinner for our SF-based son and his friends and found the kitchen a delightful place to cook a large impromptu meal. It's also an easy 5-block walk to a large Safeway -- bring the kids to carry food back.
Thank you. We definitely would return.

San Francisco visit in the Haight area

  • 5 of 5
My family and I stayed 3 nights in this property. The home was as described, a restored Victorian flat. The home was clean and came with excellent directions on use of the home and points of interest in the area. We had decided to not rent a car and found that the mass transit system had multiple locations within easy walking distance to the house. My only regret would be that we didn't stay more nights.

Great place to experience SF!

  • 4 of 5
This house was an excellent home base for exploring San Francisco! We were contemplating hotels near the airport in order to keep expenses down, but since we needed 2 rooms, we decided to try VRBO instead. SO glad we did! We spent less than 2 hotel rooms would have cost, and we feel like we actually lived in SF, albeit for a brief time. The house is charming, dark wood mouldings, stained glass, beautiful facade.
pros: the neighborhood experience, 2 minute walk to markets and restaurants, 5 minute walk to "painted ladies," private garage (my husband's favorite amenity,) super hospitable owner, lots of room (1600 sq ft) for teens to spread out, generally clean.
cons: a little dark in front rooms ( though bedrooms are light and bright), could use extra linen, one place on the website says it is 1.5 baths, but it is a true 1-bath apartment (it has a water closet.)

We love staying here!

  • 4 of 5
My husband and I and two grown children were in San Francisco in March 2013 for a family member's birthday. The location of this flat was perfect for accessing any area of The City and either bridge. One of the big pluses for us was the parking space, as we were in and out of the flat quite a bit in the four days that we stayed. The photos are accurate. The flat is very spacious. We also loved having such a great kitchen and eating area. Thank you for a great SF experience.
