Blackberry Hollow Cabin

Privacy, seclusion, and the beautiful Shenandoah River!

Cabin offers a private and secluded setting which caters to nature enthusiasts, river sport fanatics, and dog lovers! This custom home boasts spacious rooms, vaulted ceilings, gourmet kitchen, veggie and herb gardens, rose gardens, private back deck, full length screened front porch and a huge fenced dog yard. Enjoy 2 acres of adjacent private river front---take the path from the cabin to private river access. River front is beautifully manicured with picnic table, firepit, sandy entrance to the river, and no neighbors to view on either side or across the river. Put up the family sized tent (for the kids) and make sure you end the evening doing a little star gazing with a fire in the 7 ft firepit. This retreat is 1/2 mile from the end of a 'dead-end' road. This quiet road is perfect for running, cycling, walking, and was recently used in a triathlon and is part of the Old Dominion 50 mile horse endurance ride.

Area Surroundings: River frontage is on the South Fork of the Shenandoah. Bird watching is popular here with hundreds of local bird varieties to view---including eagles which are nesting along the river. Shenandoah Outfitters are just up the road 15 minutes from the cabin where you can rent canoes, kayaks, and go tubing down the river. Also, several local hikes are just minutes from here--Indian Grave Ridge and Compton Falls approximately 2 1/2 miles from here. The area has several attractions to visit while you are enjoying your stay with us. The Shenandoah Valley features picture-postcard farms and beautiful scenery along country roads and the popular Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway. If you're interested in the great outdoors, you'll love the hiking trails and horseback riding in the Blue Ridge Mountains. And don't forget the beautiful Shenandoah National Park with its portion of the Appalachian Trail. Whether your trip is action packed or more relaxed, every moment in the Shenandoah Valley is a breath of fresh air!

A wonderful place to stay!

My husband & I stayed at Blackberry Hollow Cabin for a long weekend & it was wonderful. Diana (the owner) was extremely nice & professional in all of her emails & she made sure that we knew what to bring, what was provided, etc.

The cabin sits on a nice piece of property & it had plenty of room for our dog to run around. Having 2 fenced in areas was great & it made things very easy for us when it came to taking him out, playing ball, etc. The cabin has a very homey feel to it & it's very clean & well maintained. The kitchen has everything you need to cook great meals plus there's the gas grill on the back deck. The couches & beds were comfy & there were plenty of extra pillows & blankets if you needed them. There was a nice selections of movies, books & cd's around the cabin plus the owner has a binder full of ideas of things to do around the Luray area. The front porch is awesome. We spent the mornings out there drinking coffee, reading & listening to the birds & cicadas. It was very peaceful & one of our favorite spots to relax.

We spent some time down by the river & watched groups of people canoeing by. There's a nice picnic table & fire pit & lots of open area to hang out at.

Like others including the owner suggest, it's best to get all of your supplies before getting to the cabin. It is about a 1/2 hour from town & the 9 1/2 miles of dirt road does take a little while to drive down. The road is well maintained but you do need to take it slow as there are the occasional potholes you need to avoid.

We can't wait to return for another stay & would recommend this cabin to anyone looking for a great place to stay in the Luray area.
Owner's Response: Thank you Niki for the kind words! And so glad you enjoyed your stay, looking forward to your return!

Diana

Exceptional Cabin

We have been renting a cabin over Christmas in the Shenandoah Valley for a number of years and this is by far the best. Comfortable and well appointed with just about everything you need. The kitchen was very nice with plenty of bowls, pans, tableware, casserole dishes etc. Far better than I expected. The living room is super cozy to cuddle up in front of the fire in. The front porch was shear heaven on a rainy day spent curled up with a good book. Our two small dogs were happy and well contained in both the backyard and the big dog pen. We had such a wonderful time that it was hard to leave!

Wonderful Retreat!

We were very lucky to find Blackberry Hollow. Not many places offer a little something for everyone. Our children enjoyed playing games in the cabin, taking a long bath in the claw foot tub and playing for hours on the riverbank. Our dogs, who usually are stuck in our townhome, had a great time running in the 2 fenced in areas. My husband and I loved the peaceful screened in porch and being able to just walk down to the river and fish. The cabin is beautifully furnished with lots of great charm. This was truly the escape we needed. We hope to return to Blackberry Hollow many times in the future!

This is a beautiful property! All the amenities of home except the wonderful screened-in porch, which I wish we had! Close to the river, Luray attractions and Skyline drive. The dog run and fenced back were a major plus. We loved it and look forward to a fall visit! Thanks Diana.

If you rent this you will be under surveillance

Arriving at the house it became clear that my definition of secluded and the owner's differ greatly! From the porch you can see 2 other houses. Currently the trees are bare, but during the summer you will still be able to see the house across and they are able to watch you. The pictures on the website were taken to avoid showing the house is only 30 feet from the road. I now see the road in the "Side View" picture; I should have scrutinized the pictures more because this is a deal breaker for us. One of our dogs came close to being run over by a propane truck. Almost 1 car an hour travelled this road which surprised us since it's described as a "1/2 mile from end of road".

The owner's mother lives in the house across, which I see as a conflict since the house sits on less than 2 acres of land. She told us she had seen us at the firepit (next to the dog pen that joins to the dog pen on her property) for several hours and asked why we moved to a different location. She revealed she watched us from her house (it is that close this property) and her husband watched us when he drove by. The road is so close to the house, we were able to watch him stare at us through the dining room window as he slowly drove by. Totally creepy! We did not feel comfortable staying so we left. This cabin was (previously) advertised to be secluded and private and we found neither. Everyone needs be aware that the owner's mother lives next door and watches this property for her daughter.

I also felt uncomfortable using the kitchen. The ceiling had so many stinkbugs it looked like the ceiling was crawling. We vacuumed them up using the vacuum specifically labeled "stinkbugs" that is kept on the front porch, but they soon returned and we had to vacuum them up again. It's obviously a consistent problem if they keep a vacuum specifically for this purpose.

We followed every rule, all instructions and our security deposit was returned in full. Our dogs are very well behaved but do bark when strangers approach them (like the owner's mother). I have not exaggerated any facts in this review; I have no reason to lie. I emailed the owner about all these issues, but she chose not to respond. But she does no longer list this house as private and secluded. This experience has taught me that no matter what the owner says, you cannot find privacy on less than 2 acres (like this house) and you cannot find seclusion in a house that sits 30 feet from a public road.
Owner's Response: This couple rented for a weekend in early March, and the first word I heard from them was 2-3 after they left. I received an email from the young girl asking in an angry tone if they would get charged for damages against their security deposit. This set off some red flags and I simply asked if there was something I needed to know about possible damages at the house, etc. Silence, and another email reviewing the "legal" portion of my rental agreement about the security deposit. After calling my caretaker (I live out of state) I was informed of the situation, and then things made some sense. This couple decided to create their own firepit in my frontyard, way too close to my house. And, in an existing perennial flowerbed! I offer 2 huge firepits at my property, and one right by the house, so WHY this happened I do not know. My caretaker was driving by and was shocked to see a huge fire in the front yard where there was NO firepit and stopped to ask the tenants what they were doing. They had carried several loads of firewood from my supply down there, etc. They were told to please put out the fire and use the firepits already in place. Situation resolved. While I certainly could have assessed a charge due to the clean-up that was required and the damage to my flowerbed, I chose to let it go.

What appeared to be "surveillance" of them was actually my caretakers passing by (they live a few miles down the road) and they manage several properties in the area. The cabin in the distance from my place is a rental cabin owned by neighbors, so no reason to believe they were spied on by strangers. I have to question the undercurrent of paranoia here. In my caretaker's minds the situation was resolved. My house was left in an untidy manner, several bags of trash left in the kitchen, etc. and I chose to overlook this. I have fantastic cleaning folks and figured they can handle this, at this point I had no idea of anything taking place. Actually, I never received ANY communication of any problems, concerns, etc. from this couple. Three plus months after their stay they submit a negative review. To address the dog issue, I have two fenced dog pens...its irresponsible to allow dogs to run loose on any road traveled by cars!

My property is 5 acres, it faces 9 acres of private riverfront, the rental cabin in view sits on 5 acres, next to that is a private 100 acre estate. That's fairly secluded in my book! Bottom line, communication goes a long way.
