Crested Butte Apartment Rental Photos and Description
Apartment, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 3-4)
Located in the Historic Core of Crested Butte, this property boasts local downtown Historic Core living.
When we bought the property in 2001 it had been a rental property for decades. The house was trashed and so was the yard. The home boasted very breezy walls and windows as well as several low budget remodels. The washer and dryer were in the poorly lighted kitchen with electrical conduit lining the walls. The mudroom consisted of a shed set on cinder blocks without heat. The living room was a dark den but offered the most authenticity, which we preserved in our later rehab project. There were car engines and tires piled up in the yard and the weeds had taken over the historic gardens.
It only took a week or so to improve the yard with my landscaping skills and as soon as that was done we received many compliments. Even though we did nothing to the house at first the initial landscape and yard clean up added to the charming appeal to the property. We were soon visited by the dozens of locals that had been renters in the house and to their amazement the home was already much improved form when they lived there.
Fully rehabilitated in 2003 according to the National Historic Foundation's regulations the property is like walking into the past. The home was built in 1882 and was the residence of several 'Old-Timers' and their families. When we started the remodel we were visited by many of the offspring that actually grew up in the home before plumbing and heat. They had tears in their eyes as they recalled the days of coal mining and dirt streets. Several of the families expressed their support and intrigue of our rehab and visited often during the process. We invited them in and they looked around in amazement and reminiscence.
The rehab project was overwhelming. In order to remodel a historic building in Crested Butte or any National Historic District, every effort must be made to preserve the look and feel of the original property. This is how the sentiments are preserved. so the remodel needs to come from the inside out. None of the exterior was demolished in the process. Think of it as building a model boat inside a glass bottle. despite the inconvenience of this method we were proud to be saving such a contributing property in Crested Butte and embraced the process.
As we started the demo we watched our life savings being thrown out the window, quite literally as we had to demo from the inside and huck all the materials out the windows and haul to the dumpster. We had no idea we would be throwing away 75% of the home! After a month or more of that we could then move forward again.
Since then we have finished the remodel and have been decorating and landscaping ever since. Our home has turned into a cozy, authentic miners cabin.

What makes this apartment unique
Guests will be hard pressed to leave the garden sanctuary of 209 Whiterock Ave. After 10 years of landscaping the property has been described as the most beautiful yard in town. Aside from that, the property is just 2 blocks off of Elk Ave, the towns main street where all of the businesses are. Across the street is Big Mine Park where the Ice Rink, Nordic Center and sledding hill is located.
