Overview

Surf City Cottage Rental Photos and Description

2 bedrooms, 1 bath

Tree Spirit, an “old island” style beach cottage on Topsail Island, has been treated energetically with Reiki, crystals and ineffable resources.

No tv, no phone, no clock. Come to 'be there.'

Tree Spirit Retreat is all about sharing healing energy. We welcome all who wish to bask in healing energy and nature.

Barrier islands shift, creating an auspicious environment for inner change. Topsail Island’s abundant natural attributes feature pelicans, dolphins, and constantly moving sandbars. Friends have enjoyed it and have been refreshed by their time there. We welcome new friends.

~Pet guests welcomed on a case by case basis~

Welcome to Tree Spirit!: Enter Tree Spirit through the screened porch into a great room, with bedrooms in the rear.

Tree Spirit sleeps 2 to 4 best, with total indoor space measuring approximately 750 square feet. The master bedroom contains a queen sized bed, and the second bedroom a full sized bed. If additional beds are needed, the great room provides a fold out sofa.

Practitioners in energetic healing and related fields receive a discount.

Highlights, Sundries & Views: Appointed chiefly with handbuilt and recycled furniture & appliances, Tree Spirit features a nicely equipped kitchen with stainless steel coil-burner stove and restaurant sink. Out back is a charcoal grill. Kitchen utensils include a fondue pot, shrimp/pasta pot, crock pot, ice cream maker and other sundries, plus herbs from our gardens.

A funky outdoor bathhouse with Japanese lines and cast iron tub highlights bathing facilities, complemented by outdoor shower and footbath in front & bathroom with shower inside.

Trees come into view from most windows. A second entrance in the kitchen area leads onto an east-facing deck looking out at an enormous maritime oak with three trunks.

Reiki Attunement, The Beach & The Sound: The earth beneath and around the house as well as the house itself have been treated energetically over a period of two years, culminating with attunement. Walk one or two hundred yards in either direction to reach the beach or the sound.

When you stay at Tree Spirit Retreat, we ask that you treat it as a visit to a friend’s home. Please leave things as you found them - we do not charge a cleaning fee. In the fashion of the traditional beach bungalow, assorted light beach gear can be found on the premises.

Sweet Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful week at Tree Spirit in December and I can't think of a better way to restore and attune and exhale before the busy holidays and new year. The retreat is exactly as described, except the kitchen is even better outfitted. We cooked several meals a day very comfortably. The location is just perfect--so close to the beach and the Intercoastal, and bike/walking to the things you need while still feeling like you're "getting away". We saw dolphins on 5 of our 7 days here, and a meteor shower on our first night. This is a really special place!

Also, BRING YOUR BIKE or rent one there. The island is totally bikeable and we used our bikes for all our errands and adventures. Flat, paved, easy riding for cyclists of all experience levels.

Some of our highlights and recommendations:

--Surf City Crab (508 Roland Avenue, Surf City, NC 28445): Great place to buy fresh seafood. Ask for the local stuff if that's what you want. We had fresh local shrimp, flounder and swordfish and cooked it up at Tree Spirit. My husband is a chef and he was really impressed with the fish. (This is not associated with the Crab Pot restaurant that shares the parking lot.)

--Swingbridge Beer and Wine (http://www.swingbridgebeerandwine.com/): Good craft beer selection (lots of NC brews) and wines for all price points. The owners are delightful and really knowledgeable about Topsail Island history (and the pirate lore!). Lots of beer on draft and wine in the enomatic so you can sip and shop.

--Quarter Moon Books (http://quartermoonbooks.com/): A gem of a shop with a sunny patio and sweetheart owner and staff. They have live music, a nice selection of used and new books and a charming little wine bar (craft beer selection, too).

--Herring Outdoor Sports (http://www.herringsoutdoorsports.com/): A nicely-supplied shop that rents bikes, kayaks, fishing gear, sells licenses and tackle as well as a lot of fun souvenirs and clothing/shoes (and not just touristy stuff: it's like a mini-REI store. High quality). The owners got us all set up for surf fishing and were really helpful and friendly.

Chris was very responsive and accommodating, very kind to work with. We can't wait to come to Tree Spirit again!

Just what we've been looking for!

  • 5 of 5

If you're looking for the "traditional" kitschy pastel beach decor you're not going to find it here. If you're hoping for a plasma tv just like the one you have at home this isn't the place for you. If you want to connect with loved ones over the sounds of birds chirping and take a break from the hot beach sun in a cool little cove of live oaks....you're in the right place. We loved the tree house feel and spent some blissful lazy days here. Everything was clean and well stocked and it was convenient to the beach without being on the main drag. While we were there they had the beach closest to the house shut down with big trucks replenishing the sand. (Bad for us but great for summer travelers! The finished product was a wide sandy beach with fluffy new sand.) This is going to be our go-to beach spot from now on.

A Fine Place Indeed

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at Tree Spirit for five nights beginning January 30, 2014. It was great. Crisply chilly nights that were crystal clear, with amazingly bright stars and moonlight and virtually no light pollution. I had stayed at the house twice before, once over three days in a January, when the weather was particularly, magically warm. And again in a September the following year, after the summer was officially over. Both times, on the nearby beach, there were people who seemed devoted to being there and considerate of the beauty of the ocean and each others' goodwill and privacy.

Which is why I go to the sea: primarily for contemplation of the vast and comprehension of the solitary. I could have made a pun and written "sole," which could have been misconstrued as a misspelling of "soul" and now I have explained that joke. Not sure Sole is a type of fish available near Tree Spirit, but of soul the place has lots, in my view.

I did have some amazing Bluefish during the September visit, when they are mid-sized and plentiful and fresh. If I had been feeding others along with myself I may have bought some excellent looking fresh shrimp, oysters or flounder to do so. Thomas Seafood, officially Thomas Tackle and Seafood, is where I bought the fish. Highly recommended. Very nice people, fresh fish, seasonal local vegetables and traditional local seafood condiments and so forth.

As you can probably tell, I am into cooking, so:

I highly recommend the Food Lion up the street from Thomas Seafood. It's a grocery chain known for being fairly low budget in the southeast, and as such it can be rather hit or miss. At this location, the people running the store and working there seem quite nice and motivated to make it broadly appealing, and it is working. It's by far the nearest decent market for basics and has a surprisingly good selection of fruits and vegetables. Stop at Lowe's foods or Harris Teeter for your baked goods needs, though, on your way to Surf City. Or bake them at the house.

The kitchen at Tree Spirit was fine on my first visit and now is even better, fully functional, well-equipped and sensible and easy to maintain.

In fact the whole house is quite comfortable and has gotten better every time I've been there.

Christine, the proprietor, is an exceptionally decent and reasonable person. Her apparent policy of making the house available in the off season to artists and writers for somewhat reduced rates is, I think, a valuable rarity.

My wife and I and the 2 dogs enjoyed our trip.

  • 3 of 5

My wife and I and the 2 dogs enjoyed our trip to Topsail Island. The queen bed in the master bedroom was very comfortable, the facilities were adequate and the house had plenty of room for the 2 of us and the dogs. The weather was cool 2 of the days, wonderful the other 2 days.

Owner's Response: These guests took advantage of the 10% discount for to Writers & Artists, as well as the "Book 4 weekday nights get the 5th free" Special Offer. With Winter rates the rental fee totaled 198 for the 5 nights. Weather in Winter varies, making it perfect for writing, painting, and contemplation. Indoor creative work on cooler days finds balance and enhancement through outdoor activities like beach walks and star gazing on warmer days & nights.

Wonderful stay at Tree Spirit

  • 5 of 5

I enjoyed my time at Tree Spirit. The location, beach access, amenities in the house, ability to bring my pet, proximity to downtown Wilmington, and timeliness/response of the owner during the booking process all factored into a solid review. Furthermore, going in the island's off season was a great way to escape the city. I would definitely visit again.

Perfect

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Tree Spirit and so did our dog. We will definitely be returning. The neighbors were nice. The beach was not crowded and was just across the street. The backyard was spacious and shaded so our dog could play without getting too hot. The house was very rustic but had everything we needed. Very relaxing!!! Surf City Crab Seafood Market was the best place for fresh local seafood. Also there is a little beer and wine store beside Wings that is definitely worth checking out. The worst part was having to leave. Our return deposit came very quickly as well.
