We are a family of four and have always loved the out of doors. Here we are in the Kenai Fjords exploring in 2014. Julie grew up outside of Boston, and Pete in Durango, and we both met out in the Seattle area back in 1994 through our love of kayaking and the out-of-doors. Come and stay at our home and see what we enjoy so much about the Pacific Northwest (PNW), Whidbey Island, and Sandpiper Haven in particular.
Julie & Peter Mattson purchased this house in 2011
We love Whidbey Island and have spent years traveling around the Pacific Northwest exploring. We looked at many different communities when considering a second home. Whidbey Island was by far the winner, and Sandpiper Haven took the cake. We are hooked. Whidbey has so much of everything great that the northwest to offer and perfect our family - views, mountains, water, beach, hiking, biking, clamming, kayaking, fishing, and exploring, or just plain kicking back as a family with games, puzzles, a good home-cooked meal, or curling up on the couch with a good book.
Sandpiper Haven is really 'Heaven' to us - we love the beauty, peace, direct access to beach, easy exploring of the area, and comfort of this beautiful home. Sometimes we choose to just simply hang out and do puzzles, play games, read books, and enjoy each other's company. Other times, we love sitting on the expansive deck viewing wildlife such as the bald eagle that perched on our nearby dock for TWO hours the other day, or the kingfisher hovering right out front and the abundance of hummingbirds that are curious beautiful little birds. If you can't find Julie she might be sipping her coffee in the morning or enjoying an evening glass of wine at our peaceful private promontory.
And then there is kayaking, clamming, crabbing, boating, and all the great parks and exploring nearby. A short drive to Coupeville is always rewarded with ice cream for the kids at their fabulous ice cream parlor, Kapaw's ($3 for 3 scoops, no joke!). A short trip over to Port-Townsend on the ferry is rewarded with visits to Nana and lots of great restaurants and shops and an old fort to explore too (okay, so you can't probably visit our Nana, but it is a fun town).
Come and enjoy Sandpiper Haven and we hope (believe) that you'll love to come back year after year! Just read our Reviews and see what others have to say.... We now have several Guests who have visited 4 times! And many who have booked 3 times. We strive to create a home where Guests can feel comfortable coming back year after year and creating memories to last a lifetime! It brings us great joy.
We are a new family and this was our official "just for the four of us" vacation. And your cabin made it perfect! Our six year-old children were thrilled to find the perfect games and toys. Kristin and I enjoyed the view, walk, and cozy times inside. Thank you.
Even though our time on Whidbey was shorter than we would have liked due to travel constraints, the cozy and relaxed ambiance of charming Sandpiper Haven made our stay feel timeless and refreshed us for the trip back East. The pretty cottage is on the shimmering waters of Penn Cove, perfect for watching the sunrise, local wildlife of eagles, ducks, birds and island photography.
The property itself is beautifully landscaped with flowering shrubs, lantern-lit gravel walkways as well as the mystery of a hidden private promontory with Adirondack chairs perfect for a glass of wine overlooking the water. The fire pit and extensive deck provide extra fun and ample territory for sunbathing or picnics. Indoors, somehow Julie and Peter anticipated every need and left kitchen, bath, bedroom and living room attractively decorated with artwork and well-stocked with every amenity, even the luxury of a bouquet of fresh flowers and chocolates! The house was immaculate; clean & well-maintained inside and out and had the added benefit of an air filter running for those with allergies (like me). In addition, the excellently- crafted Sandpiper website and comprehensive two books of island information in the cottage were extremely helpful in navigating our way around Whidbey from restaurants & activities to shopping & ferry schedules. We followed recommendations and ate scrumptious Penn Cove Mussels at Front Street Grill in Coupeville, had more delish fresh seafood later at Seabolts in Oak Harbor and explored the Fort, Beaches and Deception Pass on hiking trails. The advanced info was a great primer and helped us get the most out of our short time on island.
Julie kept in touch as needed and made sure everything was ready; she was only a text away if we had any questions. We also had fun buying home- grown eggs from across the street and I was thrilled to find 3 Sisters Store at beginning of road sold many gluten-free items, as well as fresh local meat, produce and dairy -all very convenient and delicious! We would highly recommend Sandpiper Haven to anyone looking for a relaxing vacation in a delightful home well-designed,organized, equipped & located for maximum rest and relaxation. We will confess we did not want to leave and pondered island retirement dreams as we left our vacation dream home of Sandpiper Haven...
Sincerely, the Wilson Family
My family and I had an awesome time at Penn Cove.
The views are amazing- the ocean as your back yard, what else can anyone ask for?? Plus th who use is so beautiful. Open floor plan, the decor and the big windows for the great view.
The house is so well equipped. Great efforts were put into making this home a perfect haven. The house has everything you could need. Little details like a waffle maker, little skewers for s'mores, plenty of wood for fire pit, games for kids, movies, even kites...made it all the more perfect.
This morning at breakfast, we were treated to a five golden eagle high speed chase. It was quite the view to see them chase each other right outside the windows all around the house and outside from the deck. Wow! We saw them fish and compete with the seagulls for the spoils.
I can't express how great this three day getaway was for my family and I. It's so peaceful up there, with only the sound of the ocean as your back yard. Exactly the break we needed from our crazy So Cal life!
The house is soooo well equipped. It has everything you could ever need. They have loads of entertainment for kids, like kites, board games, movies...
The kitchen is fully loaded too, even had waffle maker, and other little details like that, which make it all the more awesome. And the view from the kitchen- wow!!! At some point I was washing dishes and watching golden eagles chase each other outside. How cool is that??!!!
I have to bring my family back!
We loved it here!
The beach house was amazing. I loved the sunrises as well as sunsets. The sun glistened on the water every day as the birds sang to us in harmony. As we walked on the beach we spoke to God and felt peace and serenity. My daughter deployed on March 6 and we sent her off with love, peace, and tranquility. This house is perfect. It was Definately hard to leave. Thank you for sharing your home. We will return soon.
Beautiful property with great views of Penn Cove. The house was in immaculate condition and a quick drive to Coupville. All items you will need (outside of food and clothes) are at the house. Everything from kitchen items to beach gear. Owners were very responsive with all communications and the return of security deposit. Highly recommended....will love to return in the summer when the boats are available!
We stayed at Sandpiper Haven to celebrate my birthday last month. What a fabulous home. The view was spectacular. We sat outside on the porch and enjoyed the view on a sunny fall afternoon. The location was close to many restaurants, shops etc. The house was clean and cozy and perfect for our weekend getaway. Julie (the owner) was so responsive and accommodating Thank you for sharing your home and being so gracious. We would absolutely stay there again.
