Oak Harbor House Rental Photos and Description

Sandpiper Haven is a charming two bedroom, two bath, single story, low bank waterfront house located on world famous Penn Cove, Whidbey Island, with direct beach access , phenomenal views, a great deck, nearby boat launch, and much much more. Conveniently located between Coupeville and Oak Harbor, enjoy fabulous VIEWS south across Penn Cove of the Olympic Mountains and Coupville, and east of the Cascades! With annual rainfall of just over 21 inches, nearly half of the regional rainfall, you can enjoy being in the rainshadow of Whidbey Island.

Formerly called 'Penn Cove Beach Cottage' Sandpiper Haven now has new owners and plenty of updates including high speed internet, and all NEW HDTV with cable TV, ipod docking stereo CD/radio, outdoor furnishings, gas grill, fire pit, Sleeper Sofa, and much more. This is a low-allergen environment. For this reason, no pets and no smoking are permitted. Enjoy this comfy, well-appointed and well-supplied house in a phenomenal setting.

During Peak Months, enjoy access to two sea kayaks and a 12' Rowboat to qualified Guests to explore the cove, fish or crab (and yes, we have crabbing and fishing gear too).

Sandpiper Haven is truly a bird watcher's paradise with floating flocks of resident and migratory water fowl and overhead visits by a neighboring family of eagles. For the seafood lovers, try mussel and clam digging and enjoy fishing just steps from the back door. Qualified Guests can borrow the two kayaks and 12' Rowboat to explore the Cove on calm days during Peak Season at no additional charge.

The day brings beautiful views of boats, seals and otters playing in the water, and of the snowy peaks of the Olympic Mountains rising in the distance beyond the shores of Penn Cove. To the east catch glimpses of the Cascade Mountains as well. The house is south facing to capture the warmth of the sun on a large private deck in fair weather, or inspire romance watching storm-churned waves while comfortably seated indoors by the large stone gas fireplace.

Evenings can be spent by a private firepit roasting marshmallows, curled up with a book on super comfy new living furniture by a gas fireplace, playing games and doing puzzles with friends and family, or watching a movie on the new HDTV.

Or, you may prefer an evening out with great dining options in Coupeville, Langley, Oak Harbor and beyond.

Enjoy access to the local heated outdoor community pool as our Guest from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

The house sleeps 4-6 comfortably, with a heavenly pillow-top Queen Bed in the Master, and two twins in the 2nd bedroom. A new sleeper sofa with additional memory foam topper allows for another two people to sleep comfortably in the Living Room. We even provide a portable crib and bedding for infants. Dine comfortably inside or out for up to 6 Guests.

An outdoor private promontory allows you to get further away from it all, boasting even more fabulous views down the beach and across Penn Cove.

Action seekers may kayak the cove or explore the many hiking and bike trails within minutes from the house. Bring your own boat or jet ski and launch it from our private community-owned boat launch and dock just several houses from the property.

The house was built in 2003 so is well-insulated and perfect for year-round.

The historic waterfront town of Coupeville, visible across the cove, can be reached in minutes by car. Oak Harbor, to the North, is also minutes away for major shopping amenities and restaurants. And to the West lies Historical Ebey's Landing Preserve and the nearby Coupeville Ferry with service to historic Port Townsend. Greenbank Winery, antiques shops, galleries, the town of Langley, and Deception Pass are also nearby.

Best suited for: families, romantic getaways, couples retreats, girls weekends away, small reunions, great stays when attending a wedding, holiday gatherings, anniversary present for the grandparents, rewards for employees, adventure-seekers, and many more.

About Julie & Peter Mattson

We are a family of four and have always loved the out of doors. Here we are in the Kenai Fjords exploring in 2014. Julie grew up outside of Boston, and Pete in Durango, and we both met out in the Seattle area back in 1994 through our love of kayaking and the out-of-doors. Come and stay at our home and see what we enjoy so much about the Pacific Northwest (PNW), Whidbey Island, and Sandpiper Haven in particular.

Julie & Peter Mattson purchased this house in 2011

Why Julie & Peter Mattson chose Oak Harbor

We love Whidbey Island and have spent years traveling around the Pacific Northwest exploring. We looked at many different communities when considering a second home. Whidbey Island was by far the winner, and Sandpiper Haven took the cake. We are hooked. Whidbey has so much of everything great that the northwest to offer and perfect our family - views, mountains, water, beach, hiking, biking, clamming, kayaking, fishing, and exploring, or just plain kicking back as a family with games, puzzles, a good home-cooked meal, or curling up on the couch with a good book.

What makes this house unique

Sandpiper Haven is really 'Heaven' to us - we love the beauty, peace, direct access to beach, easy exploring of the area, and comfort of this beautiful home. Sometimes we choose to just simply hang out and do puzzles, play games, read books, and enjoy each other's company. Other times, we love sitting on the expansive deck viewing wildlife such as the bald eagle that perched on our nearby dock for TWO hours the other day, or the kingfisher hovering right out front and the abundance of hummingbirds that are curious beautiful little birds. If you can't find Julie she might be sipping her coffee in the morning or enjoying an evening glass of wine at our peaceful private promontory.

And then there is kayaking, clamming, crabbing, boating, and all the great parks and exploring nearby. A short drive to Coupeville is always rewarded with ice cream for the kids at their fabulous ice cream parlor, Kapaw's ($3 for 3 scoops, no joke!). A short trip over to Port-Townsend on the ferry is rewarded with visits to Nana and lots of great restaurants and shops and an old fort to explore too (okay, so you can't probably visit our Nana, but it is a fun town).

Come and enjoy Sandpiper Haven and we hope (believe) that you'll love to come back year after year! Just read our Reviews and see what others have to say.... We now have several Guests who have visited 4 times! And many who have booked 3 times. We strive to create a home where Guests can feel comfortable coming back year after year and creating memories to last a lifetime! It brings us great joy.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We are a new family and this was our official "just for the four of us" vacation. And your cabin made it perfect! Our six year-old children were thrilled to find the perfect games and toys. Kristin and I enjoyed the view, walk, and cozy times inside. Thank you.

A transition made easier

  • 5 of 5

We came to spend time with my daughter prior to her checking into her squadron at the Naval Air Station. This home made our time together even better! Wonderful walks on the beach close to so many parks and attractions it was more than I could have ever dreamed. This home had everything we needed and things we never thought we would need. I can't wait to come visit again!

This place has it all...

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we parked in the driveway, I could tell it was a gem. The landscaping was lovely, with an outdoor fire pit area, a quiet sitting area, private front deck, and stone steps down to the beach. Inside was immaculate and very bright. We loved the layout and the fact there were two bathrooms and washer and dryer. The beds were so comfortable as well as the couch, and the kitchen had everything we needed. It was nice there were so many spices and oil etc. in the cupboards. The owners moved the boats down to the beach and we were able to kayak about the Cove. We paddled across to Coupeville and had ice-cream. A seal followed us on the way back. Lots of birds around too, sea gulls, eagles, cormorants. We would highly recommend this house. There were so many interesting hikes in the area too, we know we will be back . If you like to eat out, we went to Christophers', and Ciao(Neapolitan pizza) both less than 10minutes away in Historic Coupeville.

Pretty cottage on water=perfect relaxation&renewal

  • 5 of 5

Even though our time on Whidbey was shorter than we would have liked due to travel constraints, the cozy and relaxed ambiance of charming Sandpiper Haven made our stay feel timeless and refreshed us for the trip back East. The pretty cottage is on the shimmering waters of Penn Cove, perfect for watching the sunrise, local wildlife of eagles, ducks, birds and island photography.

The property itself is beautifully landscaped with flowering shrubs, lantern-lit gravel walkways as well as the mystery of a hidden private promontory with Adirondack chairs perfect for a glass of wine overlooking the water. The fire pit and extensive deck provide extra fun and ample territory for sunbathing or picnics. Indoors, somehow Julie and Peter anticipated every need and left kitchen, bath, bedroom and living room attractively decorated with artwork and well-stocked with every amenity, even the luxury of a bouquet of fresh flowers and chocolates! The house was immaculate; clean & well-maintained inside and out and had the added benefit of an air filter running for those with allergies (like me). In addition, the excellently- crafted Sandpiper website and comprehensive two books of island information in the cottage were extremely helpful in navigating our way around Whidbey from restaurants & activities to shopping & ferry schedules. We followed recommendations and ate scrumptious Penn Cove Mussels at Front Street Grill in Coupeville, had more delish fresh seafood later at Seabolts in Oak Harbor and explored the Fort, Beaches and Deception Pass on hiking trails. The advanced info was a great primer and helped us get the most out of our short time on island.

Julie kept in touch as needed and made sure everything was ready; she was only a text away if we had any questions. We also had fun buying home- grown eggs from across the street and I was thrilled to find 3 Sisters Store at beginning of road sold many gluten-free items, as well as fresh local meat, produce and dairy -all very convenient and delicious! We would highly recommend Sandpiper Haven to anyone looking for a relaxing vacation in a delightful home well-designed,organized, equipped & located for maximum rest and relaxation. We will confess we did not want to leave and pondered island retirement dreams as we left our vacation dream home of Sandpiper Haven...

Sincerely, the Wilson Family

Simply amazing!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I had an awesome time at Penn Cove.

The views are amazing- the ocean as your back yard, what else can anyone ask for?? Plus th who use is so beautiful. Open floor plan, the decor and the big windows for the great view.

The house is so well equipped. Great efforts were put into making this home a perfect haven. The house has everything you could need. Little details like a waffle maker, little skewers for s'mores, plenty of wood for fire pit, games for kids, movies, even kites...made it all the more perfect.

This morning at breakfast, we were treated to a five golden eagle high speed chase. It was quite the view to see them chase each other right outside the windows all around the house and outside from the deck. Wow! We saw them fish and compete with the seagulls for the spoils.

Owner's Response: Dear Claudia, We are so happy that you and your family chose our home and had such a wonderful retreat. I often feel it can be hard to pull tweens and teens away from electronics, so it's nice to hear they enjoyed the games and puzzles (and yes, we have modern stuff too). The eagles- cool! A special treat! Do come again. FYI, This was the same family as below from 3/25 - they posted two reviews. -Julie and Peter

Simply amazing retreat

  • 5 of 5

I can't express how great this three day getaway was for my family and I. It's so peaceful up there, with only the sound of the ocean as your back yard. Exactly the break we needed from our crazy So Cal life!

The house is soooo well equipped. It has everything you could ever need. They have loads of entertainment for kids, like kites, board games, movies...

The kitchen is fully loaded too, even had waffle maker, and other little details like that, which make it all the more awesome. And the view from the kitchen- wow!!! At some point I was washing dishes and watching golden eagles chase each other outside. How cool is that??!!!

I have to bring my family back!

We loved it here!

Quality Time

  • 5 of 5

The beach house was amazing. I loved the sunrises as well as sunsets. The sun glistened on the water every day as the birds sang to us in harmony. As we walked on the beach we spoke to God and felt peace and serenity. My daughter deployed on March 6 and we sent her off with love, peace, and tranquility. This house is perfect. It was Definately hard to leave. Thank you for sharing your home. We will return soon.
