Sandpiper Haven is a charming two bedroom, two bath, single story, low bank waterfront house located on world famous Penn Cove, Whidbey Island, with direct beach access , phenomenal views, a great deck, nearby boat launch, and much much more. Conveniently located between Coupeville and Oak Harbor, enjoy fabulous VIEWS south across Penn Cove of the Olympic Mountains and Coupville, and east of the Cascades! With annual rainfall of just over 21 inches, nearly half of the regional rainfall, you can enjoy being in the rainshadow of Whidbey Island.

Formerly called 'Penn Cove Beach Cottage' Sandpiper Haven now has new owners and plenty of updates including high speed internet, and all NEW HDTV with cable TV, ipod docking stereo CD/radio, outdoor furnishings, gas grill, fire pit, Sleeper Sofa, and much more. This is a low-allergen environment. For this reason, no pets and no smoking are permitted. Enjoy this comfy, well-appointed and well-supplied house in a phenomenal setting.

During Peak Months, enjoy access to two sea kayaks and a 12' Rowboat to qualified Guests to explore the cove, fish or crab (and yes, we have crabbing and fishing gear too).

Sandpiper Haven is truly a bird watcher's paradise with floating flocks of resident and migratory water fowl and overhead visits by a neighboring family of eagles. For the seafood lovers, try mussel and clam digging and enjoy fishing just steps from the back door. Qualified Guests can borrow the two kayaks and 12' Rowboat to explore the Cove on calm days during Peak Season at no additional charge.

The day brings beautiful views of boats, seals and otters playing in the water, and of the snowy peaks of the Olympic Mountains rising in the distance beyond the shores of Penn Cove. To the east catch glimpses of the Cascade Mountains as well. The house is south facing to capture the warmth of the sun on a large private deck in fair weather, or inspire romance watching storm-churned waves while comfortably seated indoors by the large stone gas fireplace.

Evenings can be spent by a private firepit roasting marshmallows, curled up with a book on super comfy new living furniture by a gas fireplace, playing games and doing puzzles with friends and family, or watching a movie on the new HDTV.

Or, you may prefer an evening out with great dining options in Coupeville, Langley, Oak Harbor and beyond.

Enjoy access to the local heated outdoor community pool as our Guest from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

The house sleeps 4-6 comfortably, with a heavenly pillow-top Queen Bed in the Master, and two twins in the 2nd bedroom. A new sleeper sofa with additional memory foam topper allows for another two people to sleep comfortably in the Living Room. We even provide a portable crib and bedding for infants. Dine comfortably inside or out for up to 6 Guests.

An outdoor private promontory allows you to get further away from it all, boasting even more fabulous views down the beach and across Penn Cove.

Action seekers may kayak the cove or explore the many hiking and bike trails within minutes from the house. Bring your own boat or jet ski and launch it from our private community-owned boat launch and dock just several houses from the property.

The house was built in 2003 so is well-insulated and perfect for year-round.

The historic waterfront town of Coupeville, visible across the cove, can be reached in minutes by car. Oak Harbor, to the North, is also minutes away for major shopping amenities and restaurants. And to the West lies Historical Ebey's Landing Preserve and the nearby Coupeville Ferry with service to historic Port Townsend. Greenbank Winery, antiques shops, galleries, the town of Langley, and Deception Pass are also nearby.

Best suited for: families, romantic getaways, couples retreats, girls weekends away, small reunions, great stays when attending a wedding, holiday gatherings, anniversary present for the grandparents, rewards for employees, adventure-seekers, and many more.

About Julie & Peter Mattson

We are a family of four and have always loved the out of doors. Here we are in the Kenai Fjords exploring in 2014. Julie grew up outside of Boston, and Pete in Durango, and we both met out in the Seattle area back in 1994 through our love of kayaking and the out-of-doors. Come and stay at our home and see what we enjoy so much about the Pacific Northwest (PNW), Whidbey Island, and Sandpiper Haven in particular.

Julie & Peter Mattson purchased this house in 2011

Why Julie & Peter Mattson chose Oak Harbor

We love Whidbey Island and have spent years traveling around the Pacific Northwest exploring. We looked at many different communities when considering a second home. Whidbey Island was by far the winner, and Sandpiper Haven took the cake. We are hooked. Whidbey has so much of everything great that the northwest to offer and perfect our family - views, mountains, water, beach, hiking, biking, clamming, kayaking, fishing, and exploring, or just plain kicking back as a family with games, puzzles, a good home-cooked meal, or curling up on the couch with a good book.

What makes this house unique

Sandpiper Haven is really 'Heaven' to us - we love the beauty, peace, direct access to beach, easy exploring of the area, and comfort of this beautiful home. Sometimes we choose to just simply hang out and do puzzles, play games, read books, and enjoy each other's company. Other times, we love sitting on the expansive deck viewing wildlife such as the bald eagle that perched on our nearby dock for TWO hours the other day, or the kingfisher hovering right out front and the abundance of hummingbirds that are curious beautiful little birds. If you can't find Julie she might be sipping her coffee in the morning or enjoying an evening glass of wine at our peaceful private promontory.

And then there is kayaking, clamming, crabbing, boating, and all the great parks and exploring nearby. A short drive to Coupeville is always rewarded with ice cream for the kids at their fabulous ice cream parlor, Kapaw's ($3 for 3 scoops, no joke!). A short trip over to Port-Townsend on the ferry is rewarded with visits to Nana and lots of great restaurants and shops and an old fort to explore too (okay, so you can't probably visit our Nana, but it is a fun town).

Come and enjoy Sandpiper Haven and we hope (believe) that you'll love to come back year after year! Just read our Reviews and see what others have to say.... We now have several Guests who have visited 4 times! And many who have booked 3 times. We strive to create a home where Guests can feel comfortable coming back year after year and creating memories to last a lifetime! It brings us great joy.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We are a new family and this was our official "just for the four of us" vacation. And your cabin made it perfect! Our six year-old children were thrilled to find the perfect games and toys. Kristin and I enjoyed the view, walk, and cozy times inside. Thank you.

Amazing view, all amenities included

Beautiful property with great views of Penn Cove. The house was in immaculate condition and a quick drive to Coupville. All items you will need (outside of food and clothes) are at the house. Everything from kitchen items to beach gear. Owners were very responsive with all communications and the return of security deposit. Highly recommended....will love to return in the summer when the boats are available!

Wonderful Island house with amazing views!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Sandpiper Haven to celebrate my birthday last month. What a fabulous home. The view was spectacular. We sat outside on the porch and enjoyed the view on a sunny fall afternoon. The location was close to many restaurants, shops etc. The house was clean and cozy and perfect for our weekend getaway. Julie (the owner) was so responsive and accommodating Thank you for sharing your home and being so gracious. We would absolutely stay there again.

Perfect BD Gift to Myself

  • 5 of 5

My sister and friend said to pick what I wanted to do for my birthday. My thought was a quiet, relaxing place to enjoy sitting around drinking coffee and visiting in the morning and taking a walk on the beach. My sister and friend wanted a bit more and the helpful information from Julie and Peter regarding a day trip to Port Townsend on the ferry fit the bill. We were all happy with our plans, and they turned out great. The home has a wonderful view and so much great information in brochures as well as informational books with beautiful pictures, i.e. birds of the area. Games and videos as well. Anyway, it was perfect for us and was a wonderful mini-vacation in our own State!

Just lovely

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful property right on the water. Looks just like the photos. Very comfortable home. We did a lot of exploring and also stayed in a lot for meals because we didn't want to miss the World Series. Kitchen had all utensils and pots you need to whip up dinner. Grocery store is only 10 minutes away in oak harbor. Weather wasn't great in late October. Very cloudy, rainy and incredibly windy. Lights blinked out one evening but peter and Julie had told us about flashlights and what do do. Saw several eagles at house behind us. I was waiting for orcas to pop up but it didn't happen. Was warm enough for a couple hours to sit on deck and read if I was bundled up. Favorite trips were massage in anacordes majestic inn and spa and whale watching via island adventures. We saw several humpback whales and hundreds of pacific white sided dolphin. Just incredible! Wear lots of layers if you go. Weather changed every 5 minutes on 5-6 hour trip. Do not miss deception pass. Get out of your car in turnout between two bridges and head down the steps. Breathtaking views of swirling water and green bridge. You have to visit Coupeville but it didn't wow me. Most shops were closed. Ice cream place fabulous; Tonys tavern ok. High school parade came by when we were there. We decided due to flight time to skip last night at sandpiper so we would be closer to airport. So glad we did. That is a solid couple hour drive with minimum traffic and seattle traffic is bad. But I would have loved to stay longer at sandpiper haven. Very quiet. Nice to walk on beach when tide was out. I would love to go back one day. Thanks Julie and peter!

Perfect place to relax and enjoy Penn Cove!

  • 5 of 5

Well-appointed vacation home on the water on Whidbey Island, this property is beautifully landscaped. There are several spots outside and inside to sit and relax, enjoying an incredible view, including an intimate and private patio overlooking the water. Great outdoor fire pit with surrounding seating. I will definitely be returning to this specific property to enjoy again.

Fabulous vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Sandpiper Haven! This house is very clean, well stocked with everything imaginable, the owners are responsive, and the views from the windows and deck are beautiful. We loved kayaking, fishing, having coffee and meals on the deck, and spending countless hours on the beach right down the stairs. After a day of exploring, we were always happy to come back "home" to this fabulous beach house.
