PANORAMIC OCEAN VIEWS, 5 BDRMS & POOL ON PRIVATE 60 ACRES, WALK TO BEACH

Samara House Rental Photos and Description

Beach House with 5 Bedroom Suites + 6 Baths (Sleeps 10-12) All have pool view.

Hacienda Punta Indio is located on 60 acres of pristine jungle and is located 8 minutes from the center of Samara. The property is elevated, accessed by a wide paved road, and is perched on the hillside of half-way between the two local beaches of Playa Samara and Playa Carrillo. Both beaches are within easy walking distance or a very short drive, plus there is a path to a third private beach called Half Moon Bay. Hacienda Punta Indio is a 6-bedroom ranch-style house and it is surrounded by 60-acres. Surrounding the house are a series of walking trails that lead to vistas overlooking Carrillo Beach, Samara Beach, and the open ocean.

Soak up the views from the comfort of your infinity-edge pool. The pool at Hacienda Punta is so well-positioned that you will want to enjoy it from sunrise to well beyond sunset. The view of Samara Beach and the vast green canopy will keep you mesmerized for hours.

The house is a Spanish-style one-level house with the kitchen, living room, dining room together at one end. Near the kitchen is a laundry room, an air-conditioned pantry, and a convenient washroom. At the far end of the house are 4 separate bedroom suites. Each suite is self-contained with a king-size bed, a washroom and shower, its own front door and back door, remote-control air-conditioning, a side table and lamp, along with plenty of storage space. Each bedroom suite is very quiet and because they have their own separate entrance (and key), everyone is guaranteed plenty of personal space. Doors open to the front and have a pool view. The back doors open onto a back deck with a view of the green jungle canopy and a grove of mango trees that is a favorite place for monkeys to hang out in. Open up both doors for great airflow. A fifth bedroom is located near the dining room. It has a sitting room, an ensuite bathroom, and its windows have a view of the mango grove as well. The house has internet through a wireless router. Reception is excellent as a tower is very close. Costa Rica has excellent internet infrastructure so connections are reliable 99% of the time (power surges can happen however).

The pool is large enough to comfortably accommodate a group of 10 and because it is salt-water, there is very little chlorine smell. From the pool, you can enjoy great views of Samara Beach, impressive both at day and night. The sunsets are incredible!!!

In the house's main living area, there are three sets of large folding wooden doors which open up to make a huge living space, connecting the indoors with the outdoors. This very large living area works especially well for a group or large family.

The rooms are quiet, the infinity-edge pool is absolutely fabulous and there is a paved driveway right to the carport, but please note that this is NOT a 5-star accommodation. It is not outfitted with fine furnishings or gold-plated faucets; it is designed to be simple, comfortable, and functional. Its peaceful, natural surroundings are well suited to those on a yoga retreat, nature photographers, bird-watchers, people seeking an out-of-the-way spot who like to explore on their own or a group who is looking for something different. If some people wish to retire early at night, they can be assured of a quiet room, and their own en-suite bathroom.

The property has several well-maintained walking trails, each leading to a lookout point and a great view of the ocean. Check out Google Earth map to get an idea of the size and proportions of the peninsula. The house, with its red roof, is visible in the centre of it, and you can also see the various walking paths. Hacienda Punta Indio is located between two fantastic beaches, Samara and Carrillo. It's an easy walk to either one, though most people prefer to drive. (The driveway is quite steep due to it's high elevation.) It is not a difficult walk though, and is an enjoyable way to watch monkeys, squirrels and iguanas en route.

Hacienda Punta Indio is a great place for families to hang out in. Its large covered porch provides plenty of shade throughout the day and its very large dining room is centrally located, with plenty of seating. Comfy sofas, several lounge chairs and a hammock all provide good places for book-readers. One of the things we've noticed over the years is that because there is so few houses nearby, the sky is dark enough for great stargazing. We have often spotted falling stars. Watching storms in the distance from the pool by day and stars at night is fantastic.

At the entrance, there is a completely private gate providing access to only the Punta Indio beach house. There is also a house perimeter alarm system and a room safe.

The kitchen, while very basic, has most things you will need during your stay, including a gas barbecue. A unique feature is a walk-in air-conditioned pantry for food storage. Next to it is a laundry room.

Monkeys are usually never very far away and can often be heard, and usually found, somewhere on the Punta Indio property. It is possible to see families of monkeys in the trees by the pool, other times they are hanging out in the trees near the driveway. Iguanas ('gorobos' more accurately) are frequently seen scooting into culverts near the carport. And at night, small owls like to fly from the roof and dart past the pool lights, looking for any flying insects. It is truly a nature-lover's paradise. Regarding insects: because of the property's higher elevation, there are noticeably fewer mosquitoes here than down at beach-level restaurants in the evening.

A car is definitely recommended as restaurants in Samara and Carrillo are a 10-minute drive away. Restaurant choice is excellent: there are several Italian restaurants, Mexican, sushi, as well as some fun bars and nightlife right on the beach. Samara also has various grocery stores, boutique shops, a butcher, two ATMs and one bank, three bakeries, a gelato shop, several Internet cafes, a spa, massage on the beach, zip-lining in the nearby Samara hillside. The restaurants range from basic pizzarias to high-end. You can even find a wine bar. Carrillo has some excellent restaurants as well. Ask me for my info sheet on Restaurant Tips.

Boogie boarding and surfing are popular and both beaches offer great boogie-boarding. Carrillo has no development on it but Samara has at least 4 surf schools. There are many good restaurants and bars where you can enjoy a cool drink with your feet right in the sand. Pura Vida!

About Mary-Ellen Meyers

The 60 acres on Punta Indio is owned by a small group of mostly Canadians. We built the beach house and its infinity-edge pool in 1995 and, for more than a decade our families have spent our winter vacations there. It is a great place for extended families or for 3 or 4 couples. When our families became too large for us to all fit in this house, we each built a home on the 7 acres of Samara Reefs gated community. Hacienda Punta Indio remains a wonderful, special paradise.

Mary-Ellen Meyers purchased this house in 1995

Why Mary-Ellen Meyers chose Samara

We chose this location because of its incredible location in between Samara and Carrillo. The peninsula is absolutely spectacular, with its many trails leading to awesome views of Playa Samara, Playa Carrillo, the small island of Isla Chora, and the open ocean. The property comprises 60+ acres, which are like a private wildlife reserve, filled with monkeys and birdlife. Being located half-way between Playa Carrillo and Playa Samara, it is very easy to visit both beaches. When we built the house, many of us had small children at the time so we built a pool that would be very child-friendly and included a shallow 'beach' for sitting. The house is ideal for children and we have some very special memories.

For groups, this house works extremely well; all suites have an ensuite bathroom and are self-contained. The social area is large enough for 12 people easily. It is a 7-minute drive to Samara on all paved roads, it's an easy walk to beach, and being a bit away from the the action in town, it is a bit of a 'retreat'. After a busy day playing at the beach, there is nothing better than coming back to your personal, private paradise here at Punta Indio. Nothing beats soaking in its warm, salt-water pool and gazing out at its truly spectacular view.

The Punta Indio property has been for sale for about 15 years but because of the 2006 real estate market crash, it very likely will be many many years before we find a buyer. It is a very special piece of property. Rest assured, if we did receive an offer on the property (which is extremely unlikely), we would honour all reservations that have been made and refrain from making any new ones.

What makes this house unique

Complete Privacy: your own salt-water, infinity-edge pool on your own 60 acres of jungle paradise.

From your doorstep, you can explore many walking paths, seeing monkeys in their natural habitat, a variety of birds, iguanas (gorobos), bats, owls, and red-tailed squirrels.

From Punta Indio, you are within walking distance to 3 beaches: Carrillo, Samara and a private little-known beach in-between called Half-Moon Bay (Bahia Media Luna).

The 5 private bedroom suites give everyone his or her own space.

The lack of nearby lights makes for fabulous star-gazing at night.

Punta Indio has a trusted care-taker couple to help you should you need any assistance with the pool, a/c, or room safe. Jorge will meet you at the gate upon your arrival and Flory will come to do light housekeeping twice a week.

The beach house is on 60 acres of private jungle yet next to two of the country's prettiest beaches, and all the amenities you could ask for in two nice small towns. There are many great restaurants and enough activities to keep you busy every day of your trip!

Amazing Location!

  • 5 of 5
Hacienda Punta Indio has a gorgeous location with an ideal view of Samara beach and bay. The expansive property with numerous paths also offers views of Carillo beach. The house is reached up a long winding drive and is very private. Not far from the base of the drive is a road leading to Samara Beach and we all found it pleasant to walk from the house to the village (about one hour) along the beach. It helped that we could leave one of our two rental cars in town for the trip home. For nature lovers, the property is ideal. There are numerous birds, a variety of vegetation, frequent views of howler monkeys making their way through the jungle and the opportunity to hike through the woods on the paths provided. There is even a hike to a private beach which at low tide has ample tidal pools and beachcombing. We really adored the property! The house is spacious and a great setup for a large group with all the bedrooms a similiar size and setup (king bed, ensuite bath) so that no one was getting a "better" room. All rooms overlook the pool area and view of the beach. The pool is one of the nicest setups we have seen--the last stop on the edge of a ravine overlooking the beach and way. While sitting in the pool you can cozy up to the edge and gaze for a long time at the views. There is ample seating around the pool and a very, very comfortable hammock. I would say that the photos do not do the house proper justice: based on some other reviews we were prepared for a fairly basic setup, but were pleased to discover everything was tasteful and very comfortable. This may not be the house for individuals accustomed to 5 star resorts with spa like amenities, but it is completely clean, functional and comfortable. The air conditioned cold cellar was awesome for a large group keeping everything cool and the ants out of the kitchen. Jorge and Flory take good care of everything, come promptly when asked and are not intrusive. We had regular garbage pickup, attentive assistance when our baggage had to be delivered by the airline the day following our arrival and housekeeping along the way.

The area of Samara is a paradise for beachlovers. There are lots of possible daytrips either way up or down the coast and numerous activities for adventure seekers. We found lots of places to dine, although enjoyed dinners at home more. Costa Rica has the best fruits and vegetables and shopping for supplies is not at all difficult.

We definitely plan to come back.

Sad to leave

  • 5 of 5
This was my second time staying in the town of Samara and this time we needed a house that fit 7 adults and a toddler. This house was perfect for our family. Those who woke up early could sit on the pool deck and bird watch or make breakfast in the kitchen and look out over the beach. We explored the 60 acres of land each day, always finding something new. The family that took care of the house was amazing. They helped us get rides into town, picked us up fresh lobster, and helped us practice our Spanish. The pool is an added bonus, after hiking back up the long driveway, it was always a treat to jump in. We enjoyed walking to Playa Carrillo and swimming in the clear water. It was sad to leave such a beautiful house and town. I would highly recommend this house, it has something for everyone.

Absolutely amazing view

We all were very pleased with all aspects of our time at Punta Indio. The house was clean, well equipped and more than comfortable. Everyone associated with the house was helpful, friendly and a pleasure to know. And last but certainly not least, the view was mesmerizing.

What an incredible place....

  • 5 of 5
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Hacienda Punta Indio. The hilltop with it's wonderful breezes and great view made relaxing by the pool, reading books, swimming and star gazing high on our list. We were visited daily by geckos, iguanas and several birds. Great fun watching the social flycatchers swoop down to drink from the swimming pool and the howler monkeys with babes in arms swinging from the trees were awesome. We explored trails around the house and went down to Half Moon Bay. Playa Samara was nice and our favorite restaurant was definitely Casa Esmeralda. Playa Carillo was great for snorkeling and such a beautiful beach! We easily made day trips up and down the coast and had a great time exploring.

The house was well equipped and the beds very comfortable. The information sent to us before our trip allowed us to better plan our activities. Jorge and Flory were extremely friendly and went out of their way to make sure everything was perfect. The house was perfect for our group. We definitely hope to visit again in the near future!

2 great weeks spent at the Hacienda

  • 4 of 5
My husband and I and another couple enjoyed 2 awsome weeks at Hacienda Punta Indio. We spent many wonderful hours in the awsome pool. We really liked the house and the property but the pool made our vacation great. The view from the pool is beautiful and the palm tree for shade was appreciated. After reading the listing and seeing the pictures we got exactly what we expected. The caretakers are great, very kind and nice. The owner was exceptional with answering questions and providing information. She went above and beyond any other VRBO house that we have rented. Overall for the price of the accomodations we were very satisfied with this house and would consider renting it again if we ever came back to this part of Costa Rica.
We found some great restaraunts in Carillo and Samara and we were thrilled to find a 9 hole golf course at Punta Islita, approximatly 1/2 hour away. Calis the pro there treated us very well.

Peaceful and serene stay at Punta Indio

  • 5 of 5
We enjoyed a wonderful few nights at Punta Indio in Samara, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. I owned my own travel company which focuses on Costa Rica, so I have stayed many, many places throughout Costa Rica. I loved the Samara area. Both beaches within walking distance of the villa, Playa Samara and Playa Carrillo, were very pretty and very few people on the beaches. Punta Indio is very private and secluded, and so very relaxing. The pool is wonderful and the views are exquisite. We could spend hours just staring out over the beach and ocean. Punta Indio is wonderfully rustic in a northwoods cabin style, but that is what we wanted. I would rate the villa at a 3 star for furniture, but that is partially not fair as the architecture is also very rustic, which offers great charm. We loved having everything wide open during the day, and the vast open air feeling. Yes, there are ants which do not sting. But if you leave food out, they will quickly find the food. If you do not leave food out, they will not be a bother. I have lodged in five star plus resorts in Costa Rica with the same ant problems. That is the nature of Costa Rica and being near the woods and enjoying the amazing wildlife including howler monkeys very nearby. We did not rent a car and walked everywhere. But we are runners and the distances might be far for some. Traveling around Samara by rental car would be amazingly easy. But also calling a taxi is very cheap to go to and from town. The kitchen was well equipped and we very much enjoyed cooking and grilling, and not leaving the villa at night since it was so relaxing and peaceful. The local grocery stores in Samara were just fine for what we needed. We used a local company, Samara Adventures, for our transfers to and from airport. They are excellent. They also have a full menu of activities such as zip line, and they will pick you up at the villa. Lastly, the caretakers are excellent and quickly come if a problem. We locked ourselves out of our bedroom once, and another day I goofed up the safe. The caretakers were there within 30 minutes both times, they could be sooner if serious emergency. And they are wonderfully warm and friendly. They make you feel right at home.

Punta Indio is a peninsula of land approximately 150 acres in size - the rental property consists of about 60 acres and is the only structure on the property. It is essentially an untouched nature reserve: a wooded forest that is home to many types of birds, families of howler monkeys, and iguanas (the smaller species called gorobos). From your own private pool, you can see gorgeous Playa Samara, and the surrounding jungle mountainside. Punta Indio is a peninsula that separates 2 very large beaches, so they are both within easy walking distance. From the beach house, you can walk a short ways and have a stunning view of Playa Carrillo on the other side. Or take a longer walk and overlook the small islet known as Isla Chora and Playa Samara from a different angle. There paths are fairly well-maintained though caution is always advised. For nature lovers, the spectacular views and glimpses of wildlife are immensely enjoyable. This region is a photographer's dream: lush forest, rugged coastline. It is a short drive to the town of Samara where you can enjoy many great restaurants, activities, boutiques and stores, and all the amenities you could want. But it is always a treat to come back and enjoy your completely private hideaway. Samara is a very cute town with a friendly, family-oriented atmosphere. You can have lunch at many restaurants with your table right on the beach. You can rent horses, boogie-boards (for $2/day), surf boards, ATV's, bicycles. You can go ocean- kayaking, take surfing lessons, or go zip-lining with WingNuts Canopy Tours, truly a world-class tour.

Located between the pool area and the house are 3 extra-wide wooden sliding doors that, when open, literally double your living space. Open the doors out the back to add more airflow. By the kitchen there is a very handy walk in air-conditioned pantry with plenty of shelving. It is an excellent area for storing fruit, beer, wine, etc. Our caretaker couple, Jorge and Flory, will show you how everything works, including the perimeter alarm system and room safe. They live only 5 minutes away and are available to help if you need assistance with the house. While they speak only Spanish, they know the house extremely well and will do their best to help you. In town Brenda and Christopher at the Samara Info Center are like your personal concierge and can arrange transportation, activities, and can book restaurant reservations and massages for you.
