AREA RECREATION - Steinhatchee has been a famous fishing destination for generations, with freshwater and saltwater fishing year-round. Great fishing can be found both inshore, offshore and on the fly for big catches of redfish, grouper, sea trout, flounder, black bass, snapper, cobia and more. During the summer at Steinhatchee, scalloping takes center stage. The Steinhatchee area is known as 'Florida's Scallop Capital,' as the Gulf waters make an ideal habitat for these delicious shellfish. Scalloping season typically opens July 1 and ends September 24 each year. Other popular recreational opportunities in the area include bird watching, hiking, hunting, canoeing, kayaking, scuba diving, cave diving, nature photography, and visiting the many state parks in the area. Boat rentals and charters are available through the local marinas.
