Experience eco-jungle living in style at Casa Arenosa. This private, ocean-front home was created with all the love of Matapalo. It is located on the secluded beach of Backwash (best swimming beach in the area) Bay on an acre and a half of lushly landscaped gardens.
The Osa Peninsula is paradise for nature lovers who thrive on adventure. It is as pristine and off the beaten-road as it gets! There are no big hotels, or discos on the beach. It’s raw, beautiful and brimming with life. National Geographic calls it the most bio-diverse place on the planet!
Wake up to the sounds of the howler monkeys, take a swim in the ocean, then stroll along a secluded beach and watch Scarlet McCaws soar overhead. Afterwards, take a dip in the refreshing plunge pool and relax in a hammock while watching four different kinds of endangered monkeys play in the bamboo gardens off the deck. At night, sleep in a comfy bed under a mosquito net canopy while being lulled to sleep by the rhythmic sound of the waves.
This is the life...Pura Vida.

My husband and I traveled the world looking for a place to grow roots. When we came to Matapalo, we found our paradise. It is the most beautiful and alive place we have ever been. The wildlife, jungle, beaches and ocean are pristine. Matapalo makes you feel alive! It's a place to connect with nature, each other and yourself. You can also choose to either relax and lounge, or have a fun filled action packed adventure. In the area, there is abundant bird watching, exotic animals, beautiful jungle, river walking, waterfall repelling, tree climbing zip lines, swimming with dolphins, yoga, massage, facials, and the close by Corcovado National Park.
Also, the community of people who live in Matapalo are equally amazing. They are genuine, engaging and uplifting.
We feel blessed to be a part of life there, and are happy to share our paradise with those who can also fully appreciate it!!
Our piece of paradise is especially unique because it lies where the rain forest meets the ocean. You can walk out one side of the house and take a dip in the ocean or stroll along the beach - or walk out the other side into the jungle!
Wow, what a breathtakingly beautiful house and property. I've never seen so many beautiful birds in my life. We've been to the Osa several times and this is by far the most central, best property to rent. It's smack dab in the middle of Matapalo and one can generally walk to everything, not that one needs to. You could literally spend your entire vacation at the house and the beach out front. The Caretakers are the most lovely people and are extremely knowledgable about everything and anything to do. They are there to answer any questions and tucked away so you have ultimate privacy as well. The layout of the house is perfect and all I keep thinking is how magical this place is. You are steps away from the beach, but luckily there is enough foliage in front of the house that you are not living in a fish bowl. This allows for way more privacy than the other houses that might have better views but everyone can see into those houses. It's the best of both worlds. The kitchen is amazing and what a great place to hang out and socialize around meals and coffee. You can literally open up the entire upstairs so that you feel as though you are in a big tree house as all you can see is lush green picaresque trees with scarlet macaws, toucans, parrots and more beautiful song birds than you can shake a stick at. You can then fold in the windows and slats at night to feel more tucked in. Each of the beds have fans for the hot nights but there always seems to be a breeze coming off the water to keep one refreshed. There is a perfect little plunge pool that is deep enough that one can submerge themselves up there there ears to cool off. There is beautiful bamboo and old growth trees and more amazing flower plant than I've seen anywhere. The indoor/outdoor showers are so beautiful. Once can observe so much nature in the trees near by but it all seems to stay far enough away as not to bother you. I saw four different kinds of monkeys including these little amazing squirre monkeys that are the cutest things I've ever seen. They came through with little mini babies on their backs. Our kids spent almost all there time hanging in the hammocks and watching the nature go by. There are two of the most incredible surf breaks right out front. One for beginners and one that is for beginners/intermediate and experts. The beach was basically empty most of the time, we felt like we had our own private beach. We've been to the Osa a bunch and this is hands down the most perfect spot.
We shared a week at Casa Arenosa with another couple. Lots of space for everyone to find a place to relax, and wonderful spaces to come together and socialize. As mentioned in most of the reviews, the plunge pool is a welcome treat, and miraculously stays cool even with daily temperatures in the mid 30's. We enjoyed the trails through the Bosque del Cabo area, and had an incredible dinner there on one of our nights. Maureen, the chef, created some amazing dishes, including a delicious rare tuna that we all enjoyed. A highlight for us at Arenosa were the Scarlet Macaws, and we were thrilled as we packed the car to leave when 2 pairs did a fly-over salute together to say good-bye!
My only negative comment would be that the description on the website could use some up-dating. A useable grill does not exist, so we had to re-plan meals for the meat that we had brought to grill. There is solar power that runs lights and a refrigerator, so although you are living off-the-grid there really are no inconveniences. We used an unplugged second refrigerator to store dry goods in; but found it to be a poor option with some mold being present. A well sealed cupboard or large lidded plastic bin would have worked much better. The cookware was great, knives not bad, plenty of cutting boards, but limited drinking glasses . . . and those that were there were worn and tired. Nothing for wine, but when we mentioned this the caretaker kindly brought some wine glasses the next day. Mike, the caretaker was busy most of the week, and we never did have an opportunity to meet Cecily who was also busy doing massages.
Wi-Fi was reliable and fairly strong . . . a convenience for some, but I really was looking forward to finding this location to be too remote allowing me to test whether I could still spend a week disconnected from the world!
All things considered . . . a wonderful spot to enjoy nature and the beach.
Our little family of three had a wonderful week of surfing, hiking, family time cooking in the kitchen, cool dips in the cool pool, scarlet macaw/toucan/hawk watching from the pool, animal loving, tide pool exploring, hummingbird communing in the shower, crab feeding, monkey watching, hammock swinging while checking our animal field guides, peaceful sleeping in the crisp nights... so much magic here... We were there with our 3 year old and it was safe, clean and perfect for all of us. Being unplugged from it all, yet with wifi and reliable power is such a luxury in the jungle and the caretakers make sure you are as comfortable as can be... we just wish we had invited some friends to share it with... the property is huge and would be fun for big parties. In love with Matapalo. Casa Arenosa and it's caretakers, Michael and Ces are wonderful, helpful and super knowledgeable. If you are considering, you can't go wrong with this special spot.
We stayed at Casa Arenosa in April and had an amazing time! The house is so beautiful. We enjoyed the large open kitchen for cooking meals, making smoothies and hanging out in. There are so many seating areas throughout the house, including hammocks, so it’s easy to find a place to relax or socialize. There is also a plunge pool, which was perfect for cooling off during the heat. The beach is just a few steps from the house through some almond tress. The water was beautiful and we saw so many scarlet macaws in the trees! It was great to come out and watch the sunrise at the beach as well. Mornings were also good for seeing all the wildlife that’s around. There were toucans, and tons of monkeys in the trees just outside the house! The caretaker Mike is great. He even made us a delicious dinner one night with fresh fish he had caught himself that day. The sheets and towels were changed every few days, which was very nice as well. The place is perfect for anyone looking for an incredible tropical escape, whether it’s just a couple or a large group of friends. I would highly recommend it to anyone.
This house made our vacation so worth it. It was PERFECT! The best beach you can imagine right at your door step, and the best plunge pool at your house. Went with family. So much wildlife right outside your door. The caretakers are SO nice and helpful!
We stayed at Casa Arenosa for two weeks and could have easily stayed for another 2!! The house is open and airy and perfect for the climate and setting. The bedrooms and beds are comfortable and slept our family perfectly, there is plenty of space for gathering and places to retreat for some alone time. There is a yard for the kids to play, a cold plunge perfect for taking a quick dip to cool off. The kitchen allows for plenty of people to help prepare meals and sit together, it was a great place for our entire family to Bond.
The best part is, the local people are amazing and welcoming and the beach is right there, it doesn't get much better than this. The location of Casa Arenosa is hard to beat, it is truly what a Costa Rican vacation should be like, you will not be disappointed! Can't wait to go back!!
Extraordinary bird watching as well as an abundance of other wildlife....Monkeys, Scarlet McCaws, Toucans, etc. Adventure tours in area - waterfall repelling, tree climbing, guided hikes, wildlife sanctuary, swimming with dolphins, surf lessons, kayaking, fishing, yoga and meditation, massage and facials available.
