You will experience the ultimate relaxation sitting on our large private deck surrounded by a canopy of mature trees and listening to a bubbling mountain stream as it rushes through the yard of our enchanting mountain home. This may be a time to read, reflect or just take a nap as you enjoy the wonders of nature. A meal cooked on an outdoor grill and served on the deck will provide many hours of family togetherness and conversation. A huge rock in front of the deck also provides a sitting area to enjoy this clear flowing stream as it journeys down the mountainside. This unique place has an unusual and fascinating history. It was never built to be a rental. The original builder was Terry Sanford, former Governor of North Carolina and U. S. Senator. This charming home served for many years as the summer home and family getaway for the Sanford family. Neighbors still recall how the Governor walked down the mountain each morning to the Hound Ears clubhouse for his coffee and daily newspaper.

This comfortable home with 3 bedrooms and a loft can sleep 8 people. 3 colorfully decorated bathrooms join these sleeping facilities. The Governor's master bedroom has a king bed with a private bathroom and a flat screen TV. A second bedroom has a queen bed with a private bath and a flat screen TV. A third bedroom has twin beds and the full bathroom is just outside the door. The loft has twin beds. There is a new large flat screen TV in the family room. WiFi (high speed internet) is provided.

You will find all the comforts in this well equipped home to make your vacation one to be remembered. A well stocked kitchen with everything you need to prepare a delicious meal is provided. The kitchen has new appliances. A beautiful stone wood burning fireplace can cultivate an atmosphere of coziness and warmth on a cool mountain evening.

You will feel safe and secure in this mountain retreat. It is located in Hound Ears Club, a prestigious gated community with 24 hour security. The Watauga River, one of the best trout streams in the south, borders the Hound Ears property and is very convenient for those who dream of the ultimate fishing experience.

The Hound Ears, Boone, Blowing Rock, Banner Elk area provides all the opportunities necessary for a fulfilling vacation for adults as well as children. Many fantastic hiking trails are easily accessible including those on the Blue Ridge Parkway and Grandfather Mountain. Blowing Rock is a haven for antique shoppers and for those who enjoy outlet shopping as well as live theatre. Excellent restaurants can be found in the entire area. Tweetsie Railroad, Hawks Nest Zip line, gem mining, and Valle Crucis park (picnicking, playground, swimming, basketball) and the wildlife park at Grandfather Mountain will provide unforgettable fun experiences for any child, as well as your entire family. During the winter months, avid skiers and snowboarders can enjoy some of the best ski resorts in the eastern US only a very short drive from Hound Ears.

Keywords: House in gated community, large deck, mountain stream, near great entertainment/arts/ restaurants/fishing, hiking and skiing.

About Barbara Hammond

Barbara is a retired surgical nurse and Ron is a retired pastor. This home has been in our family since the mid 90s and we have come to love and appreciate the enchanting surrounding area of Boone and Blowing Rock. The lure of the mountains draws us here again and again as we enjoy all that the area has to offer. We have spent treasured hours with our children and grandchildren in Hound Ears. Kids and grownups alike can have fun and good times in our mountain home. We are sure you can have the same experience.

Why Barbara Hammond chose Blowing Rock

My brother bought this home from Gov. Terry Sanford in 1993 and we secured the property in 1996. Through the years we have enjoyed so much getting away to this special place. The mountains truly are magical.

Beautiful mountain home

  • 5 of 5

Checking into this house was so easy! The same with checking out. We have two small children and the house was great for our family. The house is on a beautiful lot with a peaceful mountain stream that runs right by the house. We loved being close to the slopes and Boone - this is a wonderful house in a great location.

New Year's in the mountains!

  • 4 of 5

We met another family at this house to celebrate the New Year! Hounds Ear is a wonderful community. The "chalet" style houses are fun. The streams that run under this house were fun for the kids. The homeowners were quick to respond and the house was clean. It is a perfect house for families with children.

Christmas in Boone

  • 5 of 5

We have used VRBO and found the service exceptional. We were very pleased with the extra support from the owners that went into ensuring our stay was both easy and comfortable. We checked in with the security guardhouse at Hounds Ear Country Club and were treated well and processed quickly. The check-in process was exceptionally easy. The staff security also assisted us with placing extra vehicles in a lot at the base of the mountain near the club house where the car was security but accessible. We found the house easily, and were very happy with the layout, furnishings, and instructions placed about to make the mechanics simple. The home easily accommodated our family members and guests who visited. The location of the home was great for trips to Boone, Blowing Rock, Grandfather Mt, Linville attractions, or any of the local ski resorts. The stream running beneath the entrance was always interesting and inviting. The house was well equipped with all the necessities so all we had to do was stock up on groceries. Everything else was provided. Our only complaint was that we would have liked to have seen a bit more laundry detergent in stock so we could have done sheets and towels as children departed early. We would love to visit during the summer months and have a chance to enjoy the lovely deck over the stream. A great experience, thank you.

Fabulous house in beautiful, tranquil setting!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and my 11 year old son and I stayed in the house over the Labor Day holiday weekend. My husband is a self employeed heating and A/C contractor, and getting a weekend away in the summer is not easy for us with his business. We decided to go at the very last minute, found this property, contacted the owners and put together a weekend getaway in just a few minutes. The owners were extremely accomodating. The house has everything you need. Of all of the places we have stayed over the years, this house was the most equipped for all our needs. The grounds of Hound Ears are beautiful and this property is very unique with the two streams that run under the house / deck. The bathrooms are all spacious and the water pressure in the showers is incredible. The A/C worked great, with new Honeywell thermostats, which are my husband's favorite, and exactly like what we have at home. I would definately consider staying at this property again.

We had one of the most wonderfully relaxing vacations we've ever had at this lovely home. The location, the setting, and the amenities of this property were excellent. We actually had no plans for sightseeing or activities during this vacation, so except for one afternoon of antiquing and two dinners out, we just retreated from our hectic lives and enjoyed the peace and quiet of the mountains. Although we had several days of pouring rain, we were comfortable and content. When it wasn't raining, we enjoyed time spent on the deck and sitting beside the stream that runs through the property. The kitchen is equipped for just about anything you'd want to make. There is virtually no cell phone service, so be prepared for that. Wireless internet was excellent. GPS was not accurate in getting us there, so make sure you print out instructions before you go. There is a marvelous Harris Teeter grocery store ten minutes away. The owners were wonderful to deal with. We hope to return for another vacation.

Warm memories

  • 5 of 5

This was a wonderful house for my family of 7. Everyone had their own space to escape to, yet we were able to spend quality time as a family. The house plan was comfortable and the deck was spacious! The younger children had a great time sailing their stick boats in the gentle stream. It was an easy house to access in a safe neighborhood!

Our home is kid friendly but there are steps to the loft. Our grandchildren enjoy playing in the mountain stream. Valle Crucis Park is located behind the original Mast General Store. This park is a wonderful place for family activities- picnicking, fishing, soccer, basketball, and playground area. Kids can play while parents walk the large oval track along side the scenic Watauga River. Children as well as adults will enjoy the thrills of Tweetsie Railroad Amusement Park' , 'Grandfather Mountain with its hiking trails, museum, wildlife park and fantastic views is a must ' , 'Great base for exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway and leaf watching in autumn' , 'The Watauga River, which runs along side Hound Ears, provides outstanding trout fishing amid the beautiful scenery' , 'Collegiate sports at Appalachian State University' , 'The area provides many opportunities for golfing'
