You will experience the ultimate relaxation sitting on our large private deck surrounded by a canopy of mature trees and listening to a bubbling mountain stream as it rushes through the yard of our enchanting mountain home. This may be a time to read, reflect or just take a nap as you enjoy the wonders of nature. A meal cooked on an outdoor grill and served on the deck will provide many hours of family togetherness and conversation. A huge rock in front of the deck also provides a sitting area to enjoy this clear flowing stream as it journeys down the mountainside. This unique place has an unusual and fascinating history. It was never built to be a rental. The original builder was Terry Sanford, former Governor of North Carolina and U. S. Senator. This charming home served for many years as the summer home and family getaway for the Sanford family. Neighbors still recall how the Governor walked down the mountain each morning to the Hound Ears clubhouse for his coffee and daily newspaper.

This comfortable home with 3 bedrooms and a loft can sleep 8 people. 3 colorfully decorated bathrooms join these sleeping facilities. The Governor's master bedroom has a queen bed with a private bathroom. A second bedroom has a queen bed with a private bath. A third sleeping room has twin beds and the full bathroom is just outside the door. The loft has twin beds and is up a flight of stairs. There are TVs in two of the bedrooms and a new large flat screen TV in the family room. WiFi (high speed internet) is provided.

You will find all the comforts in this well equipped home to make your vacation one to be remembered. A well stocked kitchen with everything you need to prepare a delicious meal is provided. A wood burning fireplace can cultivate an atmosphere of coziness and warmth on a cool mountain evening.

You will feel safe and secure in this mountain rereat. It is located in Hound Ears club, a prestigious gated community with 24 hour security. The Watauga River, one of the best trout streams in the south, borders the Hound Ears property and is very convenient for those who dream of the ultimate fishing experience.

The Hound Ears, Boone, Blowing Rock, Banner Elk area provides all the opportunities necessary for a fulfilling vacation for adults as well as children. Many fantastic hiking trails are easily accessible including those on the Blue Ridge Parkway and Grandfather Mountain. Blowing Rock is a haven for antique shoppers and for those who enjoy outlet shopping as well as live theatre. Excellent restaurants can be found in the entire area. Tweetsie Railroad, Hawks Nest Zip line, gem mining, and Valle Crucis park (picnicking, playground, swimming, basketball) and the wildlife park at Grandfather Mountain will provide unforgettable fun experiences for any child, as well as your entire family.

About The Owner

Barbara is a retired surgical nurse and Ron is a retired pastor. This home has been in our family since the mid 90s and we have come to love and appreciate the enchanting surrounding area of Boone and Blowing Rock. The lure of the mountains draws us here again and again as we enjoy all that the area has to offer. We have spent treasured hours with our children and grandchildren in Hound Ears. Kids and grownups alike can have fun and good times in our mountain home. We are sure you can have the same experience.

Why The Owner chose Blowing Rock

My brother bought this home from Gov. Terry Sanford in 1993 and we secured the property in 1996. Through the years we have enjoyed so much getting away to this special place. The mountains truly are magical.

My family and my brother's family spent an enjoyable weekend at this property in September 2012. The house was very clean and well maintained. There was a big fireplace and flat screen TV in the living area with plenty of sitting area. A huge deck wrapped around half of the house - ideal for enjoying the wildlife and birds while eating outside. The water from the stream running underneath the house was delightful to listen to while sitting outside. The people who own this house were wonderful to deal with and were very accomodating to our needs.

We were recently privileged to spend our fantasy mountain vacation at the beautiful Tranquil Mountain Retreat in western North Carolina. Imagine our delight when we arrived to discover this beautiful home, nestled on a hillside, with a murmuring creek cascading over nearby rocks. Inside we discovered a beautifully appointed home, in immaculate condition, with every possible ammenity available. The owner's photos and descriptions were accurate in every way, and they were very helpful to us prior to our visit.
There were four of us in our party and we had a great time exploring some of the many attractions in the area. Those included Boone, Blowing Rock; a portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway; Holy Trinity Church in Glendale and St. Mary's in West Jefferson, both of which feature beautiful frescoes by Ben Long; a wonderful shopping spot across the road from St. Mary's, the Greenhouse Craft Shop; Shatley Springs , north of W. Jefferson; and, perhaps our favorites, the Mast General Store complex in nearby Valle Cruces. In addition to the stores, there is the Valle Cruces Community Park located behind the Annex store. It is a lovely park with picnic tables and shelters, nice playground equipment and a very nice paved walking trail.
Our favorite restaurant was the Daniel Boone Inn in Boone, and we also enjoyed Proper's and Peppers, in Boone, and Shatley Springs. The owners have provided a very nice notebook with suggestions for other fine restaurants in the area.
We loved being in this beautiful peaceful setting, and were reluctant to leave when our departure time arrived. For anyone seeking a get-away to refresh their very souls and bodies, we highly recommend this beautiful and tranquil spot.
