Yankee Homecoming

Enjoy Newburyport's famed Yankee Homecoming. First held in 1958 as a way to reinvigorate community pride and interest in the downtown. Over 50 years later, this 8 day annual celebration is the second oldest remaining festival in the country. You will find endless activities to take part in all around the downtown. Free Waterfront Concerts take place every evening in Waterfront Park behind the Firehouse Center for the Arts. http://yankeehomecoming.com/

Newburyport/Plum Island is world-famous as a “natural history” destination. Recognized as one of the nation’s finest birdwatching areas, birders and nature enthusiasts from around the world come to this area.

Walk and hike along the beaches of Plum Island, through marshland of the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, and into the woods of Maudslay State Park. Stroll along High Street and admire the Federal Mansions or watch the boats on the Merrimack as you make your way down the boardwalk.

There are whale watch cruises with Newburyport Whale Watch, deep-sea fishing boats, evening party boats, public docks, sunset cruises, and harbor tours. Numerous yacht clubs and marinas are within a short distance of downtown.

Windsurfing and kayaking are ways to enjoy the river and sea. In the summer, the Merrimack River is full of boats, you don’t have to have your own to enjoy the beauty from the water. Instead, you can take a narrated harbor tour or a Plum Island Ecotour. Charter a sailboat with Defiance Sail Charters or take a cruise on the scenic Merrimack River with Newburyport Cruises or the Essex River with Essex River Cruises.

There are plenty of fish to be caught in the Merrimack River and off shore. If you enjoy fishing, you can cast your lines off the shore of Plum Island, or sign up for an off-shore excursion with the Captain’s Fishing Parties, Rocky Point Fishing Charters or the Clipper Fleet. Or hire a charter boat with Channel Edge Charters.

Bicycling, running, jogging and walking around the flat streets of the city are popular pastimes. Bicycles may be rented right in downtown Newburyport at both EZ Pedaler and Riverside Cycles!

Newburyport is a restaurant mecca of renown. Fine foods, fine wine and fine dining for every season. Newburyport’s reputation for exquisite fare is well known throughout New England and beyond. Park your car and you are in walking distance to over thirty restaurants. Locals, day trippers, and tourists flock to this city of dining delights, not only in the summer, but year-round. Varied menus offer tastes of Yankee New England, American and European fare, New Orleans, ethnic enticements, and definitely the unusual. You can enjoy legendary temptations such as the perfect lobster, succulent seafood, or jump into the culinary offerings of Plum Island.

Dining for all Seasons. Family fare, candlelight romantic settings, waterfront dining, sidewalk cafés, local favorites and critically acclaimed upscale gourmet adventures draw food lovers to the culinary destination of Newburyport.

We hope you enjoy your vacation in our beautiful home.

Sean and Monica Welsh

*Please note, during the months of July and August we rent by the week only.

**Please note that our 218 year old home does not have central air. It does have 7 air-conditioners, one in each bedroom and two on the first floor. The attic master suite in extreme weather conditions can become too hot for both the ceiling fan, skylight shades and airconditioner. We can not be held responsible for the weather.

About Monica M Welsh

Sean and I both work in Advertising in New York City. We bought the house shortly after moving from San Francisco to Newburyport. Since this was our first home there has been a lot of love put into it. We added a brick sidewalk and landscaping not long after moving in. We love golfing, biking and swimming in the area. We have an 8 year old cockapoo named Brownie and she loves to chase after the very fast squirrels in our yard. After weeks in the city Brownie is glad to enjoy her yard in Newburyport.

Monica M Welsh purchased this house in 2002

Why Monica M Welsh chose Newburyport

We chose Newburyport for its beauty and its schools. Being urban people we wanted to live near where the action is. Our house is in a very desired location near town. We love being steps away from everything down town. Running back to our house from a waterfront concert downtown is a nice convenience.

What makes this house unique

We have very large windows with views of the water. The pedicabs run around our block all the time so catching a ride is easy. We have a treadmill in the master with a view of the river that is magnificent. Our home is stylish yet comfortable

Very Accommodating

  • 5 of 5
We contacted Monica on Wednesday, with a very last minute need for our family to be in Newburyport. She could not have been more accommodating or easier to work with.
When we arrived on Thursday the home was beautifully maintained, and was prettier than the pictures. There was a very comfortable, welcoming feel. The weather was cold, but the inside was warm.
It is easy for us to recommend this home to anyone thinking of visiting the beautiful town of Newburyport.
Thank you to Monica and Sean for making this so easy and enjoyable for our family.

Great House! Perfect for multiple friends attending a wedding.

  • 5 of 5
Very spacious, clean, well-lit, excellent amenities and new appliances, very modern decoration, very close to town - 5 block from town center and water, modern master bedroom, ample and convenient on-street parking, perfect for a family or friends get-away.

Perfect layout for multiple couples staying together. Plenty of space to congregate or have privacy.

We would definitely rent here again! Monica was so responsive to any of our questions. Lights were on when we arrived and a water dish was out for our dog. Felt very welcomed.

Awesome Staycation!

  • 5 of 5
We rented this beautiful home for a family gathering. Eleven people needing 5 bedrooms. Everything was clean, prepped and ready to go when we arrived. This home has all the amenities you'll need and it is in the best location - close enough to walk to downtown Newburyport, but far enough out for easy street parking.
We are already thinking about next year.
Thanks for a great experience.

A tranquil place to catch up with friends

  • 5 of 5
Some girlfriends and I spent some quality time in this wonderful house, steps away from downtown Newwburyport. The house is peaceful and was stocked with everything we needed (linens, towels, extra blankets, coffee pot etc.) and the location cannot be beat! We can't wait to return and stay here again!

Beautiful home in a charming town

  • 5 of 5
We rented this house to celebrate my 60th birthday. I live in northern New Hampshire, and was looking for a location that would attract friends from NH, MA & NY to come for the weekend. When I saw the house on the website, I couldn't believe such a charming place in downtown Newburyport was available, and it was 2 blocks from the birthday party restaurant. When we arrived, the house was immaculate, and beautifully renovated and furnished. The 3rd floor "penthouse" master bedroom is especially impressive, with a view of the harbor, and skylights. The fireplace in the kitchen made that room the perfect place to hang out. The location is fabulous --- it's in the downtown grid, right off Route 1, across the street from the harbor, and a 5 minute walk to the heart of the town. Newburyport is a charming little seaport town, with shops and restaurants, and we all enjoyed walking around, and not having to move our cars. The house is close to Route one, but you wouldn't know it, because it is very quiet inside. I would highly recommend this charming little place for a weekend getaway, or a weeklong vacation. Plum Island is several miles away, with beautiful white sand beaches, and a bird refuge with Audubon Information Center.

Thanksmus in Newburyport

  • 5 of 5
My 3 adult children and son-in-law all met to celebrate a late Thanksgiving and early Christmas at 1 Market Street. We were delighted with the set up of the house and everyone had their own bedroom. The house was decorated for the holidays and we had Monica's favorite recommendations for restaurants in town (walking distance to all!). Winter was no problem in Newburyport and the town was hopping with people and restaurants and shops all open. We walked everywhere and had great food and great shopping. We cooked Thanksgiving dinner one night in the well-equipped kitchen and had a fabulous 3 days. We would definitely recommend this property especially for adults that want to walk to restaurants and shops and not be bothered with driving everywhere.
