Keywords: Well Kept Cabin, Great Location
We have owned the 'cabin' for going on 25 years. It has been a focal point for our black hills trips which have created countless memories.
Mike Hiltunen purchased this cabin in 1987
Located 200 yards off a paved highway yet secluded enough to melt away the day.
My husband, his sister and her spouse spent a whole week here in August. Very clean, and everything was provided: more cooking utensils than you could possibly need, a microwave, washer & dryer (and detergent), large frig, coolers we used to take cold drinks along for the day - everything. All you need to bring along is your clothing and toothbrush. The whole cabin is decorated in a rustic décor, complete with elk head mounted above the fireplace.
There is plenty of parking, even if you have a trailer. Behind the cabin/house is a 40-yard mowed path to the Michelson Trail, and great Rails-to-Trails project that goes 109 miles. I walked most mornings, and saw lots of deer, turkeys, and one woman saw a coyote. The scenery is beautiful!
The cabin is ten minutes max to Custer State Park, 15 minutes to Crazy Horse Monument, half an hour to the Mammoth Site, and about an hour from Sturgis. We were there the week after Sturgis, and all the shops in Custer had their t-shirts reduced quite a bit. Be sure to stop in at the owners grocery store, and right across the street is my favorite, "A Walk in the Woods", with the prettiest restrooms I've ever seen. The pizza shop right down town was terrific, with lots of seating outside when the weather is nice.
The only negative was no internet, but my brother-in-law brought along a device that enabled us to get on each day. Good cell phone reception for Verizon users.
Having two full-sized bathrooms was wonderful, and there was plenty of sleeping space for at least 7, not including 3 couches and two recliners. The folks in the community were extremely friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay here again!
My husband and I, and our two children, ages 7 & 10, absolutely loved this cabin. Not only was it extremely clean, it was within 45 minute drive to all our destinations in the Black Hills. The owners were very timely in their communications with us, and the photos were accurate, and in fact, didn't include a surprise extra bedroom! We felt like we were using a relatives' house for the weekend, we were so well taken care of. Would recommend this cabin to our own families in the blink of an eye.
Side note: don't waste time eating at the State Game Lodge in Custer State Park. The Cattleman in downtown Custer had bigger servings, better service, better prices, and was much more kid friendly.
This property exceeded my expectations! Very nice, well maintained and super clean. The owner was very informative and eager to answer any questions. The cabin absolutely had anything you would ever need during your stay. Great location, easy to find, and close to most of the major attractions. i would recommend this place to anyone i knew traveling to the Black Hills, and will probably return here myself.
Loved our time at the cabin. Exactly as it was represented. Absolutely everything here you would need for your family vacation. It's like a Goldilocks home that the owner had just left for the day. Right down to the drawer with flashlight, tape, etc. Comfortable beds - really would sleep 10 if you had to. Fans available when needed - the biggest shower head we've ever seen - lots of extras in the kitchen. We enjoyed all the area destinations, but most enjoyed the morning coffee with the deer coming right up to the cabin porch. That's livin! Yes we would go back and yes we would recommend to our friends. Good value and beautiful location.
Cabin was very well equipped and clean. Bedrooms were spacious though could use more space for storing guests personal items. Accommodations matched pictures on website. Kitchen very large as was living room. Loved seeing the deer in the front yard. Close to many tourist attractions (Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, etc.). If there was a drawback, it was if you opened the windows, you could hear the cars on Hwy 395. Would definitely use this cabin again and will recommend it to our friends.
