This cozy guest house is in the Zilker ‘hood that marks the entryway to South Central Austin. The neighborhood sits on a limestone bluff over the 350-acre Zilker Park. This is the home of the Austin City Limits music fest and of Austin’s spring fed soul—Barton Springs pool.
From your guest house, walk west into the sunset to dip in Austin’s coolest pool, mountain bike along Barton Creek, stroll through the Botanical Gardens, romp on the Zilker’s playscape or ride the Zilker Zepher kiddie train. The gorgeous Umlauf Sculpture Garden nearby is an urban oasis.
Walk to Restaurant Row: Walk north to affordable eateries on Barton Springs Road’s restaurant row or to Lady Bird Lake, where you can rent a kayak or canoe or circumnavigate the lake on Lady Bird’s hike and bike trails. At dusk, run, paddle or pedal under the Congress Ave. bridge, home to the nation’s largest urban bat colony. Just across the lake looms the downtown skyline and the Whole Foods’ mother store, where you can have your sweetie dipped in a vat of chocolate.
Walk east to the Alamo Drafthouse, where you can eat and drink your way through a film. High Ball next door is a retro-nouveau cocktail bowling alley. Along South Lamar try Suzi’s Chinese or high-end locally produced cuisine at Olivia’s or Uchi’s scrumptious sushi. South Congress’ funky shops and restaurants are a short bike or car ride away, as are Sixth Street’s nightclubs.
I was a little anxious about this place, as I always am. Dis I make a bad choice? Well, the neighborhood was wonderful, quiet, a good varity of houses, lots of trees and birds, and frequesnt people walking. We walked into the back yard and met the owner right away sweeping flower petals. A wonderful chat and then into the cottage. Very comfortable! Too bad we never found time to use the kitchen. We had four occasions to talk to the owners in the main house and enjoyed each conversation very much
This is our third time renting from Vacation Cake Rentals. Each has been a great experience! Jay and Lauren have been great to work with and are responsive to my requests. This place is very cozy and very comfortable for two people. The pictures do need updating as the opening next to the bed has been removed and some furnishings have been updated. You can easily walk to the restaurants on Barton Springs and some on Lamar. The Alamo Draft house theater is also a short walk. It is a great place to enjoy a movie, a meal or snack and a beer. Go to Mutha Effen Bingo at The Park on Lamar on Tuesday night for a fun time. The food and drinks are good also. Visit the Whole Foods mother ship at Lamar and 5th. Unbelievable! Can't wait to rent again.
This is an adorable studio in a great south Austin neighborhood. I stayed here while I was working in town, and it was perfect. Very comfortable bed and cozy surroundings. It's in a neighborhood very close to south Lamar, South Congress, Zilker Park, Barton Springs (pool and road), the Convention Center, and just a few minutes to downtown. It was perfect for my stay, and I'd recommend it to anyone in town for work or play on their own or with a partner.
My boyfriend and I rented this cottage for our first weekend trip together and thought it was pretty much perfect. We enjoyed having breakfasts and quiet moments on the porch. The cottage was very clean and inviting with plenty of space for the two of us. It had more amenities than I would ever expect to find in a private rental that made our stay very comfortable. Also, it was walking and biking distance to almost everything we wanted to do during our stay. It was really a very charming place.
The only thing we were confused by at first was the décor. After googling the address we learned that it was/is the office of a midwife (which wasn't included in any of the descriptions and not noticeable from the photos). I only mention this because we are a young, newer couple and it took us a little by surprise.
We absolutely loved our stay here and would definitely rent this property in the future.
