Atenas Villa Rental Photos and Description

Villa, 3 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 5)

If you want to experience heaven on earth, this gorgeous three bedroom home in the 'Lomas del Paraiso' (the Hills of Paradise) gated development in Atenas, Costa Rica, will be perfect for you. Atenas is renown for its fabulous weather and spectacular mountain views. In fact, National Geographic magazine once proclaimed it as having “the best climate on earth.”

The house and casita are very private, contemporary in style and extremely well appointed. They have exceptional views and are visited by a wide range of exotic birds including Toucans, mot mots and montezuma oropendolas. 'Our' great kiskadees will wake you in the mornings with their happy calls. You can see photos of these birds, taken from our terrace, on our website (see link below)

The home, constructed in 2009, is on a large, beautifully landscaped lot has a full range of amenities for indoor and outdoor living. You can enjoy the spectacular mountain views in the day and twinkling lights of nearby towns by night from the sunning and dining terraces, the lap pool and the play pool (yep, two swimming pools) or from inside as well, through floor to ceiling windows in every room. Both the main house and the casita have very high ceilings made of beautiful Costa Rican hardwoods (even in the closets and utility room!).

The 12 meter, one lane, lap pool is perfect for keeping in great shape or just floating lazily and the three by five meter play pool is great for relaxing or having fun. The terraces also feature a pair of lounge chairs for reading, sunbathing or just enjoying the views as well as a beautiful dining table for six for that outdoor breakfast, a drink with friends or a quiet talk.

The main house features a master suite, which includes the sleeping area with king size bed and television. An elaborate master bath with a large soaking tub, a private outdoor shower built of beautiful local rock and a large walk-in. In all rooms, there are sliding patio doors to access the outdoor living spaces. High end bed and bath linens are provided for your further comfort.

The great room includes a living area with leather couches, a large screen high definition TV. It also has a lovely dining area with a table seating six and, as is the case for all rooms, spectacular views. The last portion of the great room is a very large, well-equipped, gourmet kitchen with a generous island-bar that is perfect for evening gatherings over a glass of wine.

The guest bedroom/office in the main house includes a desk that is perfect for your computer, although you can use it anywhere on the property because there is high speed WiFi access to the internet. This room also contains a twin bed and has an adjacent bathroom with a shower and small, rock wall enclosed outdoor atrium.

The casita includes a bedroom with a queen size bed, the standard floor to ceiling windows to enjoy the mountain view, a bathroom with a spacious shower and its own terrace. The casita terrace has a small kitchenette with a microwave oven and an outdoor dining table with seating for six.

Atenas, situated in the Central Valley, halfway between San José and the Pacific Ocean, is the perfect base from which to explore Costa Rica and see cloud forests, rain forests, tropical birds, butterflies and many other animals. You can easily make day trips to go zip-lining in the treetops, hiking in the mountains, cruising in the jungle and birding for a remarkable range of tropical birds.

You are also just over thirty minutes from Escazu, by the new highway, and its posh restaurants, wonderful shops and the remarkable MultiPlaza shopping mall. San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, has many cultural and historical sites, and is about 45 minutes away. In the house, you will find a brief guide to the area which we have prepared, as well a guidebook, which you can use to identify the sights you would like to see and how to find them.

Casa Dos Leones is approximately 35 minutes from the Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose/Alajuela. The many easy day trips include Beaches (Jaco - 38 miles, one hour; tiny Esterillos - 40 miles, 1 ¼ hrs), Volcanos & National Parks (Poas Volcano Nat'l Park - 22 miles, about an hour; Arenal Volcano Nat'l Park - 50 miles, 2 ½ hours), Towns (Sarchi - 9 miles, 20 minutes; Cartago - 43 miles, one hour +). Talk with our property managers, Adrian & Marian about local sites or arranging tours for you.

Atenas also has 4 supermarkets and a great Farmer's Market on Fridays where you can purchase fruits, vegetables, cheese, flowers, fish, pork, chicken and home made baked goods. There are also a number of excellent restaurants, five pharmacies, a number of sodas (little restaurants that serve breakfast and lunch), and two favorite gringo hangouts, El Balcon, a European style cafe where one can have breakfast, lunch or wonderful pastry and Kay's Gringo Postres, where you can have breakfast or lunch, a piece of cake or pie and talk with Kay and Tom about the good ol' days in South Dakota.

In addition, your stay will be made more enjoyable by our housekeeper, Isabelle, who will happily do your laundry if time allows. Alfonso, our gardener will come once a week to attend to the outdoor greenery and our property managers, Adrian and Marian, who are multi-lingual, will do anything possible to make your stay a success. They can even arrange custom tours, through their travel agency, and an airport pickup or delivery if you call them ahead of time.

You will not be disappointed in our home, the stunning vistas or Atenas where you can leave all your cares behind and enjoy complete relaxation. We invite you to visit our website (link below) to see additional photos of the property and Atenas in addition to animals mentioned earlier - all photos taken from our terrace except the mot mot. The site also contains a number of useful links. It is no wonder that many people return to Atenas year after year for their vacation.

About Barry Leon

We are Claudia and Barry and we have been happily retired since 2004, first at our small ranch in Texas and now splitting time between Casa Dos Leones in Atenas, Costa Rica and Maison Dos Leones in Saintes, France (SW part of the country. We love both places and are delighted to be able to share them with you. Before retirement, Barry was a business executive and Claudia was a biological researcher and college instructor. Claudia is now an artist whose digitally enhanced photographs are being shown at galleries in Massachusetts and Texas. We have one son who, with his delightful wife, live in Austin, Texas. We love elegant design, many types of cuisine and seeing as many parts of the world as possible.

Barry Leon purchased this villa in 2010

Why Barry Leon chose Atenas

We considered many wonderful places before buying our home in Atenas. Ultimately, we chose this house in this location for a number of reasons including the superb climate, the extraordinary beauty of Costa Rica and this area in particular, the many, the many things to see and do (including just laying by the pool with a glass of wine and watching the clouds filter through the mountains) and the exceptional people of Costa Rica - Ticos, as they refer to themselves. Many people call this area paradise and we certainly agree.

What makes this villa unique

In addition to being in the lap of all the beauty that mother nature offers, Casa Dos Leones is close to a huge variety of eco tourism sites and it is a short 30 minute drive, by the new freeway, to Escazu which has many exceptional restaurants (Spanish, Italian, French, Argentine, Peruvian, Texas BBQ, Mexican, etc.), hundreds of beautiful boutiques and virtually anything else that you might want or need.

My husband and I enjoyed our 15th anniversary for 12 days at Casa Dos Leones tremendously! Barry prepared us well with excellent communication from the start, providing us with lots of pertinent info about the house, the area and the customs. Aad picked us up at the airport, which went seamlessly and was such a help in acclimating us geographically. He and his wife Marian were extremely helpful in arranging the car rental, making reservations for us for the coffee plantation tour, and were always available and responsive when we had any questions at all.

The house is just lovely, with a view that was enchanting, day and night. It is a clean, sleek modern, open layout with floor to ceiling windows facing the mountain view. The soaring ceiling and many ceiling fans kept the house cool and at night the blanket on the bed was most welcome! Some nights it was downright chilly! I could have stayed at the house the whole time, enjoying the two pools just steps from the living room, but we ventured out each day to explore Atenas and then further afield to discover places such as Grecia, La Garita, Jaco, Santa Elana, and La Paz waterfall and the fabulous Peace Lodge. The weather was perfect and we managed to navigate the roads and highways just fine -- of course, we were prepared by Barry and Aad for the curvy roads and Costa Rican driving ways! We actually marveled at how the many motorcycles maneuvered their way through the traffic without causing much disruption to the flow. One word of advise though -- obey the speed limit and wear your seat belt!

When we first arrived we had a delightful surprise waiting n the freezer for us, and on our actual anniversary Aad and Marian delivered another surprise from Barry and Claudia, which was much appreciated as we toasted our 15 years of marriage. Our hosts were just perfect and Aad and Marian are wonderful representatives for the homeowners. Costa Rica is a beautiful and magical country and we certainly plan to return again soon!

Christmas perfection

Casa Dos Leones is pure paradise. We could not have made a better decision and are already planning a return trip. The layout worked perfectly for our family (2 children), and we were amazed by the attention to detail -- which included a mid-week cleaning. Barry and Claudia are the perfect hosts, and we cannot thank them enough. By the way, I took my road bike and had the best time on the surrounding roads, particularly as I like to climb.

Excellent Home in Atenas

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at Casa Dos Leones. The online pictures simply do not do justice to the beauty of the modern architecture of this amazing home in the mountains or the views of the valley we enjoyed every day and night. In addition to the extraordinary home, the detailed information provided by the Barry and Claudia regarding where to eat and where to go and what to do was a tremendous resource.

We chose to not rent a car. That was a difficult decision leading up to our trip as we have always rented cars before and we have plenty of experience driving in many different countries. However, we heard many issues regarding car rentals in Costa Rica from friends and family who had not so great experiences. In addition, it is true that there are very few road signs and pretty much everyone we met on our vacation had a story to tell of being lost and turned around on the roads in Costa Rica from the minor to the harrowing. We were glad not to have that particular experience on this vacation. Instead, we enlisted the help of the property managers and owners of Bunki Tours, Aad and Marian, who became our new Dutch friends in Costa Rica.

Choosing our vacation excursions was made incredibly simple by Aad and Marian leading up to our departure. They never failed to respond immediately to our numerous questions via email and gave us ample and detailed information regarding excursions and worked with us to make a plan for our trip that was a well thought-out and comprehensive vacation from two great people that have made Costa Rica their home.

We asked for and received suggestions and pricing from Aad and Marian on many different excursions and after we made our choices, our trip was planned for us to avoid over-crowding on the weekends in areas (such as the tortuga island excursion), etc. Beyond the thought and care that went into planning our trip with us, we cannot say enough about Aad and Marian and how fun and knowledgeable they were and what a difference they made to every aspect of our trip-- they were quite simply wonderful.

We did not need a car because Marian picked us up and drove us to and from every excursion giving us fascinating background on each place we visited. As we drove the length and breadth of Costa Rica, I can say that removing that ever-present vacation stress of getting to each place and paying the right amount and finding good places to eat and dealing with the local back and forth of securing tickets or meals was a relief

Perfect vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of 3 (couple and a 10 months baby) and we rented this house for 12 days. We needed to get away to a quiet and beautiful place. Casa Dos Leones was exactly that. Barry and Claudia gave us tones of informations and were very helpful. Everything they said turned out to be true. No bad surprises. The description and pictures gives an exact idea of what you're gonna get. Atenas is beautiful and the weather is just perfect. The house is located in the mountains surrounding the town. The view is spectacular. The house is really comfortable and spacious.

We got great service from the property management (Marian and Aad). Marian took us everywhere (beach, coffee tour, La Paz, etc.) and it was really convenient with our baby.

Thank you again for everything. We recommend your house very strongly. We had an amazing vacation.

Pura Vida!
