The home, constructed in 2009, is on a large, beautifully landscaped lot has a full range of amenities for indoor and outdoor living. You can enjoy the spectacular mountain views in the day and twinkling lights of nearby towns by night from the sunning and dining terraces, the lap pool and the play pool (yep, two swimming pools) or from inside as well, through floor to ceiling windows in every room. Both the main house and the casita have very high ceilings made of beautiful Costa Rican hardwoods (even in the closets and utility room!).
The 12 meter, one lane, lap pool is perfect for keeping in great shape or just floating lazily and the three by five meter play pool is great for relaxing or having fun. The terraces also feature a pair of lounge chairs for reading, sunbathing or just enjoying the views as well as a beautiful dining table for six for that outdoor breakfast, a drink with friends or a quiet talk.
The main house features a master suite, which includes the sleeping area with king size bed and television. An elaborate master bath with a large soaking tub, a private outdoor shower built of beautiful local rock and a large walk-in. In all rooms, there are sliding patio doors to access the outdoor living spaces. High end bed and bath linens are provided for your further comfort.
The great room includes a living area with leather couches, a large screen high definition TV. It also has a lovely dining area with a table seating six and, as is the case for all rooms, spectacular views. The last portion of the great room is a very large, well-equipped, gourmet kitchen with a generous island-bar that is perfect for evening gatherings over a glass of wine.
The guest bedroom/office in the main house includes a desk that is perfect for your computer, although you can use it anywhere on the property because there is high speed WiFi access to the internet. This room also contains a twin bed and has an adjacent bathroom with a shower and small, rock wall enclosed outdoor atrium.
The casita includes a bedroom with a queen size bed, the standard floor to ceiling windows to enjoy the mountain view, a bathroom with a spacious shower and its own terrace. The casita terrace has a small kitchenette with a microwave oven and an outdoor dining table with seating for six.
Atenas, situated in the Central Valley, halfway between San José and the Pacific Ocean, is the perfect base from which to explore Costa Rica and see cloud forests, rain forests, tropical birds, butterflies and many other animals. You can easily make day trips to go zip-lining in the treetops, hiking in the mountains, cruising in the jungle and birding for a remarkable range of tropical birds.
You are also just over thirty minutes from Escazu, by the new highway, and its posh restaurants, wonderful shops and the remarkable MultiPlaza shopping mall. San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, has many cultural and historical sites, and is about 45 minutes away. In the house, you will find a brief guide to the area which we have prepared, as well a guidebook, which you can use to identify the sights you would like to see and how to find them.
Casa Dos Leones is approximately 35 minutes from the Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose/Alajuela. The many easy day trips include Beaches (Jaco - 38 miles, one hour; tiny Esterillos - 40 miles, 1 ¼ hrs), Volcanos & National Parks (Poas Volcano Nat'l Park - 22 miles, about an hour; Arenal Volcano Nat'l Park - 50 miles, 2 ½ hours), Towns (Sarchi - 9 miles, 20 minutes; Cartago - 43 miles, one hour +). Talk with our property managers, Adrian & Marian about local sites or arranging tours for you.
Atenas also has 4 supermarkets and a great Farmer's Market on Fridays where you can purchase fruits, vegetables, cheese, flowers, fish, pork, chicken and home made baked goods. There are also a number of excellent restaurants, five pharmacies, a number of sodas (little restaurants that serve breakfast and lunch), and two favorite gringo hangouts, El Balcon, a European style cafe where one can have breakfast, lunch or wonderful pastry and Kay's Gringo Postres, where you can have breakfast or lunch, a piece of cake or pie and talk with Kay and Tom about the good ol' days in South Dakota.
In addition, your stay will be made more enjoyable by our housekeeper, Isabelle, who will happily do your laundry if time allows. Alfonso, our gardener will come once a week to attend to the outdoor greenery and our property managers, Adrian and Marian, who are multi-lingual, will do anything possible to make your stay a success. They can even arrange custom tours, through their travel agency, and an airport pickup or delivery if you call them ahead of time.
You will not be disappointed in our home, the stunning vistas or Atenas where you can leave all your cares behind and enjoy complete relaxation. We invite you to visit our website (link below) to see additional photos of the property and Atenas in addition to animals mentioned earlier - all photos taken from our terrace except the mot mot. The site also contains a number of useful links. It is no wonder that many people return to Atenas year after year for their vacation.
