About Katie Gesten
My two brothers, sister and I inherited High Point and the Barn House from our parents in 2007. They maintained their homes magnificently. My siblings and I grew up in Connecticut and our parents bought High Point when we were teenagers...hoping for escape time from us, I'm sure! They retired full time to Maine in 1972 and designed and had the Barn House built years later. I live with my family in the mountains of Colorado. My three children and I, along with my brothers, sister and their kids, have spent every summer in Maine exploring the beaches, tidal rocks and pools, hiking islands, kayaking, canoeing rivers and learning to live without all the craziness and pressures of 'the real world.' Maine is how life should be!
Katie Gesten purchased this house in 1990
Why Katie Gesten chose Pemaquid Harbor
My siblings and I are, understandably, very attached to High Point and the Barn House. Not only because this was our parents home but it has always represented uninterrupted family time. The Barn House is an open, bright, uniquely Maine, comfortable cottage surrounded by lawns, flowers, views and magical lighting. The memories are endless of croquet on the lawn in hysterical laughter, hours on the beaches with my parents and their grandchildren catching crabs, making sand sculptures, after dinner ice cream cones in New Harbor, day trips on the ferry to Monhegan Island to hike all day and build fairy houses in Cathedral Woods, and loud family lobster dinners at Pemaquid or Round Pond lobster docks. The Barn House is surrounded by summertime action of parades, historical events, art shows and galleries, antiques and an old-fashion movie theater. I could go on and on................
What makes this house unique
The Barn House is located in a part of Maine that has many attractions but never feels touristy! Pemaquid Beach has a long white beach and dunes and it is easy to find a quiet spot to read or nap! The area is physically so breathtakingly beautiful. Exploratory road trips or bike rides take you to surprising beauty around every corner. Walpole Barn hosts wine tasting at tables in their apple orchard and two libraries offer children's hours. The historic digs at Fort William Henry date back to before the French and Indian War and sometimes they offer to have volunteers join in and learn archaeological techniques! The Carpenters Boatshop is fascinating to visit and they also offer classes. There is something for every age and every interest nearby.
