Photos and Description of the Au Train vacation cottage rental
2 Bedrooms (Queen size beds), 1 Bathrooms, Sleeps 6

We invite you to come stay at your own private cottage and enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of Lake Superior and Au Train Island. It's the perfect place for a family vacation, a getaway for two, or a small group.

Nestled on the shore in Shelter Bay with 175 feet of private lake frontage, relax and unwind in a peaceful, quiet setting. Sit on the front porch with your favorite book, watch the birds as they come to the feeders and listen to the sound of the waves. If the weather isn't to your liking, grab your book and head to the screened/glassed-in gazebo by the lake. This picturesque bay with its view of moored boats, sunrises over Au Train Island and occasional eagles, provide a perfect backdrop for a true vacation.

You're sure to enjoy the vibrant fall colors provided by Mother Nature, as the cottage sits on the edge of the Hiawatha National Forest.

Further Details: This clean, tastefully decorated cottage comes with a fully-equipped kitchen and everything needed to make your stay as comfortable as being at home. The open kitchen, dining, and living area have breathtaking views of Lake Superior. The master bedroom has a queen-size bed and a small balcony for you to enjoy. The other bedroom has a queen-size bed and a set of large bunk beds.

Linens are provided but you do need to bring your own bath towels and washcloths. Smoking is NOT permitted inside the cottage and pets are sometimes allowed if approved in advance, although there is an additional fee. Unfortunately the cottage is not handicapped accessible.

Directly in front of the cottage you can launch your kayak, swim to and dive off of Seagull Rock or just relax. Deer Lake, a 1/2 mile away, is a beautiful inland lake with excellent swimming and picnic facilities.

Au Train, six miles east, features one of the most pristine white sand beaches on the south shore of Lake Superior and is a favorite swimming and canoeing spot. Nearby you can find area waterfalls, Grand Island Recreation Area Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Seney Wildlife Refuge, US Forest Service Songbird Trail, and the Hiawatha National Forest.

After a days enjoyment, head to the fire pit before returning to the cottage for a restful nights sleep to the sound of the waves.

Shelter Bay Cottage is a perfect vacation spot!

About the Owner: Since we both love to travel, we know what guests want in an accommodation, cleanliness, coziness and comfort! You'll be sure to get all that and more at Shelter Bay Cottage!

We are third generation owner of the property and since we are both from Alger County, it made perfect sense to retire here along the shore of Lake Superior. We enjoyed many years here when our children were growing up, but now it's times to let others enjoy it as well. We can assist you in deciding what you want to do with your time, as we know the area very well.

Situated half way between Marquette and Munising, it's a perfect location for enjoying all that Alger and Marquette Counties have to offer. And since we live directly across the street from the cottage, we're available to make sure you have a pleasant stay.

No better place to stay!

5 of 5
Submitted: October 9, 2012 Stayed: September 2012
Seeking a quiet hideout on Lake Superior where the lake and sky will keep you entranced by their changing natures, day and night? Shelter Bay Cottage is that place. Seeking a conveniently located, comfortably and beautifully furnished house from which to take easy day trips to the glories of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Grand Marais if you head east or Marquette if headed west? Well, that’s Shelter Bay Cottage, too.

It is simply the perfect location for viewing AuTrain Island and being stunned by Lake Superior sunrises. There are good beds for sleeping well after a day of hiking, a complete kitchen for cooking the just-caught whitefish you bought in Munising, and comfortable chairs and couches for reading. A screened gazebo is just right for gazing bug-free at the lake or enjoying a happy hour with a round of cards.

Shelter Bay Cottage lacks nothing to give you the good life of a great vacation on Lake Superior. Needless to say we give the cottage (and its owners) five stars!

My husband and I loved this place. It is in such a spectacular setting and the view of Lake Superior is outstanding. The cottage is clean. The owners are awesome. We loved it so much we've already rented another 10 days in 2013. It was perfect in every way. There were days we just stayed at the cottage because it's just that beautiful right there. You don't really need to go anywhere else if you don't want too. Of course we did other things......but it was always hard to leave Shelter Bay.
The Upper Peninsula offers so much.

Beautiful Fall Get Away

5 of 5
Submitted: November 16, 2011 Stayed: October 2011
My wife and I stayed for three nights in early October. The cabin was very cozy and inviting. My wife loved to curl up on the coach in the evenings to read a book or look at her iPad. Everything was clean and well taken care of. We spent all our day times driving and hiking to the various waterfalls in the area to take pictures. We were pleasantly surprised how beautiful the waterfalls were. It was really neat having the lake just a few feet from the cabin. Got some great sunrise pictures. I remember laying in bed one morning thinking sleeping in would be nice, but then I noticed the brilliant red and orange glow coming from the window. No more sleep for me. I had to go out to the beach and catch the sunrise. We enjoyed out stay immensely and didn't want to go back home. We hope to come back again when we get the opportunity.

Our First Visit to Shelter Bay Cottage

5 of 5
Submitted: September 19, 2011 Stayed: August 2011
Our first visit, but not our last! We spent two weeks at the cottage and it was perfect. Sitting on the porch, drinking our coffee, and just taking in the spectacular view was our favorite part of the day. Jack and Nancy could not have been more accommodating. The cottage was cozy, comfortable and clean. It also was well supplied with cookware, books, games, and interesting photos and artwork. Shelter Bay Cottage is in an ideal location between Munsing and Marquette, which provides all sorts of activities whether you drive east or west. Once home, friends were interested in hearing more about the cottage after we shared what a good time we had in the UP. I'm sure Jack and Nancy will be getting some calls!

A Week at Shelter Bay

5 of 5
Submitted: July 31, 2011 Stayed: June 2011
We loved the cabin and the area. No crowds, no phone, nothing to do but relax. The view was spectacular. The waves on the beach made it feel like being at the ocean. A week was not long enough and we can't wait to go back. Jack and Nancy made sure everything was perfect. It was great visiting with them and learning about the area.
