We live nearby to our vacation rental. We have three children (ages 7-11), three dogs, and a guinea pig. David is a builder and artist, Sharon works for a non-profit community health center and the children are all Waldorf educated and swim for a swim team. Our weekends are filled with swim meets and beach outings!
We decided to settle in this location because it is so close to Hilo, Pahoa and Volcano area. We fell in love with the area because we were able to buy 9 acres of native forest in such a secluded and private setting. We love listening to the birds, crickets, frogs, (and even the geckos). We feel so close to nature and feel that is such a beautiful place to raise our children.
We were able to build our home sustainably from many reclaimed and recycled materials. Because David is such a creative builder, he was able to find use for so many items we found over the years and incorporate them so beautifully into our home. The result being such an artistic, creative, and cozy retreat. Many of the building materials were left over from houses he had built. Ohia logs were salvaged from nearby cleared lots and even shipping crates were reformed into various furnishings.
Explore Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, snorkel at Kapoho Tidepools, and Richardsons Beach Park, explore the on-site underground lava tube caverns, hike out to view the lava flow at Kalapana, take a day trip to Kailua Kona, view Hilo's beautiful waterfalls, shop at nearby natural foods store and farmers market
