Overview

Samara Villa Rental Photos and Description

Luxury Villa, 4 Bedrooms, 4 Baths, (Sleeps 9)

This beautiful Samara Reefs villa has spectacular, panoramic views of the ocean, the everchanging off-shore reefs, and the tiny island of Isla Chora. It is located within easy walking distance to wonderful, sandy, Samara beach and is only a 5-minute drive to the town of Samara or to the pristine neighbouring beach called Playa Carrillo. Villa Mirador is equipped with everything you would expect to find in a high-end, luxury beach-house: each of its four spacious bedrooms has an ocean view, the 2 master bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms, there is a private infinity-edge pool, a large ultra-modern gourmet kitchen, a large living room and dining room, a huge upper outdoor deck, an even larger lower pool deck, a butler's pantry, an on-site care-taker couple, a security gate, comfortable lounge chairs, a wonderful outdoor barbecue area/wet bar, beach towels, even beach chairs to take with you to the beach.

Villa Mirador is, in every way, a perfect “getaway”. There are no neighbors' cars in sight, no roads in sight, in fact, no other people other than the caretakers … just complete privacy and tranquility. At Villa Mirador, what you WILL hear is the soothing sound of ocean surf, the sounds of the many songbirds, and, from time to time, the hooting and howling of several families of monkeys (Mantled Howler Monkeys) - all from your lounge chair on your deck. It is easy to see why the house is called Villa Mirador; a “Mirador” in English is a viewpoint or a balcony.

Throughout the Samara Reefs acreage and lined along the interlocking brick driveway there are many beautiful, well-maintained gardens featuring a stunning variety of beautiful and deliciously-scented flowers and shrubs that are prized by florists: red ginger plants, Gardenia, Bougainvillea, the very exotic Bird-of-Paradise flower, and Frangipani, which is the flower found in Hawaiian leis. What differentiates Villa Mirador from the other 6 Samara Reefs houses is that it is located at the farthest end of the driveway from the gated entrance. And, because it is situated a bit lower on the hillside, its 'yard' is a beautiful green mature jungle canopy native to this dry tropical rainforest. The huge trees, which you can practically touch from the kitchen sundeck, add to the feeling of serenity and beauty. This piece of preserved jungle canopy, which stretches down hundreds of yards towards Samara beach, is something you would only expect to find 'off the beaten path'.

This house was designed by one of Costa Rica's top architects, Karin Nagel, who is a Lecturer at the International Center for Sustainable Development in San José, Costa Rica and who was trained as an architect at the University of London. This house, in every way, makes the most of this gorgeous natural setting. Everything about its design is well-thought-out and there is great flow from room to room. All 4 bedrooms are very large, each with a king size bed (or 2 singles if you prefer), spectacular ocean views and stunning rock floors. The gourmet kitchen is fully outfitted, with ultra-modern European cabinets, a granite sit-up bar/wet bar for four - it is, without question, THE entertainment hub. Extras include a walk-in air-conditioned pantry and a butler’s kitchen with even more granite workspace.

As a guest of Villa Mirador, we welcome you to enjoy the centerpiece of Samara Reefs – the stunning waterfall feature located next to Casa Colibri (vrbo 383817). Every day the waterfountain comes on at 11:00 a.m. Water flows down through a series of pools carved into a rocky riverbed called “Rio Corto”, then flows over a wall, down into a shallow jungle pool below. Inspired by the waterfall and Hotspring pools at Tabacon Resort in Lake Arenal, this setting is just spectacular. And sitting UNDER the waterfall is spectacular because for a brisk, refreshing shoulder massage, there is absolutely nothing like it. Behind the waterfall is a cool shaded grotto with a concrete built-in bench. This provides a hidden spot to sit and enjoy the wonderful vista of Isla Chora. This is definitely an interesting spot to seek out during the hotter hours of the day. There are many many activities available in Samara, something different to keep you busy and entertained every day: surfing lessons, boogie-boarding, stand-up paddle boarding, renting ATVs, bicycles, go for a guided nature hike with Samara Trails, go zip-lining with the wonderful guides from WingNuts Canopy Tours, all highly rated. Ask Brenda at the Samara Info Center for her recommendations and check out their website.

At Villa Mirador you’ll find everything you might need: bath, pool, and beach towels, Wi-Fi, a large TV, a selection of DVDs, even beach chairs that you are welcome to take to the beach with you. When you arrive at Samara Reefs gated entrance, you will be greeted by our Samara Reefs Administrator, Daniel Quiros. He will show you how everything works in the house: the telephone, the alarm system, the room safe, the pool controls, etc. If you need any assistance with anything to do with the house, the pool, or the remote-controlled security gate, he will be able to help you. His wife, Anna, is our trusted and valued Housekeeper - she will come to the house every 3 days. Anna and Daniel live on-site across from the water fountain feature and will be available throughout your stay, should you need assistance.

Villa Mirador is an easy 10-minute walk to the beach and a 5-minute drive to town. Because of its convenient location, a car is optional. A taxi ride from central Samara is just $5. Pick up some steaks and cook them at home in this barbecue-dream-location, hire our special in-house chef and enjoy delicious food served on Villa Mirador’s outside dining room, or eat in town from a choice of wonderful and varied restaurants in Samara and Carrillo. The hardest decision you might have all day is whether to have Italian food at Gusto Beach, mouth-watering Argentinian outdoor grilled entrees from the ultra-romantic El Lagarto, seafood pasta from the #1 local favourite, Casa Esmeralda, wood-grilled steak at El Colibri Steak House, Mexican, French, Mediterranean, sushi, French dining at the highly rated Samara Pacific Lodge, burgers at beach-front Vela Latina, traditional whole fried fish at beach-front El Ancla, or the wonderfully healthy creations at LuvBurger. A quick check with TripAdvisor shows even more - the choice boggles the mind.

In the town center you will find several very good grocery stores, a fresh and very well-stocked produce store called Dona Lechuga, 2 ATMs, the very helpful people at Samara Info Center, several bakeries, a few excellent beach-front surf schools, a scuba dive shop, great souvenir and clothing boutiques, unique jewelry stores, a large and very popular organic grocery store/café/Farmer’s Market, 2 pharmacies, a Medical center, two Dentists, a Fitness center, Spa, Massage, etc.

About Mary-Ellen Meyers

My husband and I are from Vancouver, Canada. We fell in love with Samara and Carrillo when we visited in 1991. From then on, we started coming every year. Costa Rica is such a wonderful family-friendly and safe country that in 1995 we even brought our baby - when she was only 6-months old. We started building in Samara Reefs in 2006 with our Canadian partners and enjoy sharing this piece of paradise with others. Because our children are school aged and we are limited to visiting during school holidays, we rent out Villa Mirador for the rest of the year.

Mary-Ellen Meyers purchased this villa in 2006

Why Mary-Ellen Meyers chose Samara

This property's location is truly spectacular - not only does it have gorgeous panoramic ocean and beach views, views of the dense green canopy and jungle but it is within walking distance of the wonderful town of Samara. It is an easy 10 minute walk to the beach, and 5 minutes more to beach-front restaurants and excellent grocery stores.

Perhaps most importantly, because the house is on an elevated ridge with a forested hillside behind it, it gets both on-shore and off-shore breezes, keeping temperatures a few degrees cooler than in town. The airflow is awesome. It is close to town but not TOO close to town. Being on an elevated hillside, you can enjoy watching flocks of parakeets flying around the trees behind you. From the sunset deck overtop of the carport, you can watch families of monkeys swinging in the nearby trees and watch the sun as it sinks below the horizon. Samara has amazing sunsets. From the pool deck, you can soak up stunning ocean views and cool breezes. In the evenings, when you stand at the barbecue area, it feels like you can reach out and touch the trees. You're that close.

Playa Samara is one of the most beautiful, safest and cleanest, beaches in Costa Rica. The protective reefs in the horse-shoe bays ensure safe swimming with no undertow. The waves are large enough for beginner surfers and the town is extremely family-friendly and relaxed. In terms of cleanliness, both Playa Samara and Playa Carrillo have been awarded BLUE FLAGS, having achieved, and maintained, the highest rating for cleanliness and sanitation standards. The town of Samara is funky and friendly - it is big enough to have tons of choices in terms of restaurants, grocery stores, great activities, and every amenity you could want. But it is very much a small town: no all-inclusive hotels, no chain hotels, no vendors selling trinkets, and no gimmicks. Just great people, a great environment, a great climate, lots to do, and a very relaxing and peaceful atmosphere!

What makes this villa unique

Besides the views and the green surroundings, the house has a saltwater infinity edge pool which is completely private. Samara Reefs is a secure gated community with a full-time on-site Administrator and Housekeeper (Daniel and Anna) who are long-time, trusted employees. This house is not a 'rental' property. It has been furnished carefully and lovingly by our family and it has everything YOUR family needs to enjoy their stay: fully stocked gourmet kitchen, walk-in air-conditioned pantry for the storage of all your food supplies, a full-time gardener, 3 super-comfy lounge chairs, 2 hammocks, 2 outdoor showers for your convenience, a huge supply of beach towels, a super high-end barbecue kitchen, a separate air-conditioned media room, a fully equipped laundry room, every kitchen tool, gadget you could want ... a high-quality blender, a citrus juicer, herbs in the garden, an outdoor washroom, a yoga mat, as well as high quality linens and towels in the bedrooms and bathrooms.

VILLA MIRADOR, A GEM IN PARADISE

  • 5 of 5

WE SPENT A DELIGHTFUL TEN DAYS AT VILLA MIRADOR THIS PAST FEBRUARY FOR A FAMILY CELEBRATION WITH OUR GROWN CHILDREN, SPOUSES AND TWO ADULT GRANDCHILDREN. EACH SPAN OF AGES IN OUR GROUP HAD NOTHING BUT SUPERLATIVES TO SAY ABOUT THIS EXQUISITE HOME WITH ITS BREATHTAKING VIEW OF THE PACIFIC AND ISLA CHORA. FOR ALL OF US, IT WAS A WONDERFUL DISCOVERY OF A TRANQUIL AND PRIVATE "HOME AWAY FROM HOME".

VILLA MIRADOR WAS MASTERFULLY DESIGNED BY A WELL-KNOWN ARCHITECT WHO IMPARTED HER LOVE OF NATURE AND NATIVE WOODS. HER ATTENTION TO DETAIL, PRIVACY AND INDOOR-OUTDOOR GRACIOUS LIVING IS RIVETING. IT WAS HARD FOR ANY OF US TO PULL AWAY FROM LOUNGING POOLSIDE AND ENJOYING THE OPEN-AIR DINING AREA TO EXPLORE OTHER PLACES IN THE VICINITY.

THE ENTIRE STAFF OF SAMARA REEFS WAS VERY ACCOMMODATING TO US WITH ATTENTION TO UPKEEP, COOKING FOR US UPON OUR REQUEST [BE SURE TO ASK FOR THE DELICIOUS CEVICHE!] AND WITH INFORMATION ON RESTAURANTS AND PLACES OF INTEREST IN THE AREA. SPECIAL KUDOS GO TO MARY-ELLEN MEYERS, OUR VILLA OWNER, WHO CORRESPONDED WITH US OVER WEEKS OF PLANNING AND WHO IS A VERY SPECIAL PERSON, AS WELL AS A TREASURE TROVE OF VALUABLE TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS FOR A SUCCESSFUL VACATION TO THE NICOYA PENINSULA.

AS FOR THE BIGGER PICTURE, SAMARA IS A DELIGHTFUL SMALL TOWN THAT HAS A FRIENDLY MIX OF INTERNATIONAL AND TICO RESIDENTS. THE ECLECTIC MIX TRANSLATES INTO MANY EXCELLENT RESTAURANT CHOICES OF VARYING CUISINES. WE FOUND THE TOWN'S PACE UNHURRIED AND A SOURCE OF RELAXATION.

INDELIBLE MEMORIES OF OUR VACATION INCLUDE AWAKING TO NATURE'S SOUNDS OF THE OCEAN ITSELF, COLORFUL BIRDS AND HOWLER MONKEYS, WALKING A SHORT DISTANCE TO ONE OF THE PRETTIEST BEACHES IN COSTA RICA, STROLLING IT'S PRISTINE SANDS WITH COFFEE IN HAND AND WATCHING FISHERMEN IN ACTION AT DAWN'S ARRIVAL, AND SIMPLY GAZING FROM OUR INFINITY POOL TO NATURE'S UNPARALLELED CANVAS AND ITS FINAL TOUCHES OF COLORFUL SUNSETS AND CRYSTALLINE STARS.

IN A WORD, WE WOULD DESCRIBE OUR STAY AT VILLA MIRADOR AS "SPECTACULAR". WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS WONDERFUL GETAWAY TO ANYONE SEEKING A PERFECTLY EQUIPPED AND ELEGANT HOME WITH A PANORAMIC VISTA, AS WELL AS A CLOSE PROXIMITY TO A CHARMING, LAID-BACK TOWN THAT DESCRIBES THE TRUE MEANING OF THE NATIONAL SLOGAN, "PURA VIDA".

Amazing vacation at an amazing property!

  • 5 of 5

We had an absolutely fantastic time staying at Villa Mirador. The house layout, the privacy, and the beautiful backdrop worked perfectly for our family and Mary-Ellen was such a wonderful and helpful host. The pictures cannot begin to explain how beautiful the backdrop is and we will miss it dearly. The family of howler monkeys in the tree next to the property was always very entertaining for everyone. We would definitely recommend this house to anyone and we will be coming back in the future.

Winter break 2015 Playa "Sam"ara

  • 5 of 5

Each year our family gathers for winter break to thaw out a little from winter in the Northeast USA. We rent a house at the beach or take a cruise to someplace warm. This year we were 7 adults and 3 young children in grade school. We stayed 2 weeks at Villa Mirador and can share that the house and the owners were a perfect fit for our family. We regularly have great rental experiences, but this one was exceptional!

The sound of the ocean, the view, the pool, the large covered patio, the large open concept living/kitchen, and the large sleeping and bath rooms were perfect. Mirador is a beautiful home that is simply and tastefully furnished and decorated - a very nice home overlooking the ocean. We appreciated the privacy of the house located down the hill at the end of the driveway away from the other Samara Reefs homes.

A large family of howler monkeys (25+) provided close up viewing 3 or 4 mornings/evenings as they either slept in or commuted through the trees next to the house. The birds and iguanas were also abundant for viewing.

The adults in our family enjoyed the 20-25 minute walk to and from Samara via the beach once or twice a day. The children were not as happy with the walk back to the house since the last 10 minutes are a fairly good uphill walk. We did not rent cars and used taxis when not walking. This worked out really well for our family.

The owners' information about the house and Samara was extremely helpful. All questions about the house and Samara not included in the information were quickly answered. The owners even helped our children visit a local school which turned out to be a great learning experience.

The children's favorite places to eat were Casa Esmeralda and the covered courtyard outside of Samara Organics. The adults really enjoyed Samara Pacific Lodge.

Our activities could not have been better. The hike with the biologist, learning to surf with Didier at C&C, multiple outings with DondeJaviTours, zip-lining with the 2 brothers, horseback riding to Playa Buena Vista, and a lot of R&R at Villa Mirador - all perfect!

Villa Mirador - lovely spacious house with pool, perfect for families!

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely home!! Villa Mirador is one of the smaller homes in this hilltop gated community, and is set off to one side and lower than some of the others, so it affords a lot of privacy. The house itself is clean, tastefully decorated and has a great open floor plan on the main level. The pool and covered patio are wonderful! After going to the beach, or zip-lining with Wing Nuts, or taking the hike in Werner Sauter's Wildlife Preserve with Samara Trails, we would return to the outside shower and the wonderfully refreshing pool, then spend an hour or two playing cards and enjoying the constant gentle breeze on the patio. Beds were very comfortable and A/C worked well for the hottest days.

Mary Ellen, the VRBO contact for several of the houses in this development, was very easy to work with, very informative and quite prompt. We actually had the opportunity to meet her and her husband, as they were staying in their home a couple of houses away from Villa Mirador while we were there. She didn't need to volunteer that information, but she did. She is just as nice in person as she is via email!

Three things to note: First, the community's live-in caretaker, Daniel and his wife Anna, do not speak English very well. No problem for me, but if you don't speak Spanish, you might want to ask questions ahead of your arrival. Daniel is a friendly, reliable and prompt man; I enjoyed speaking with him. Second, a rental car would be useful here, although not necessary. We took a private shuttle from the Central Valley to Samara and chose not to rent a car while in Samara itself. We and our two boys, ages 12 and 9, were fine with walking down to Playa Samara via the somewhat steep, dusty road down the hill, along a short stretch of road and through part of the town's residential area to the beach (about 15 minutes, 5 more to the commercial center of Samara). We also walked back up (during the day), or took a cheap taxi ride (I think $4) back up at night. If you are not as mobile, you should consider renting a car, which will give you easy access to Playas Carrillo and Guiones. Third, do make use of Brenda Dragonne's assistance at the Samara Info Center - she can arrange anything for you and knows a ton.

I forgot to mention the howlers! Our boys LOVED seeing a whole clan of them, babies and all, hanging around in the tree next to our house. We saw iguanas right next to our pool and some beautiful birds. What a lovely beach stay! Thanks again, Mary Ellen.

4 - 4 - 7 - Great!

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of 4 adults, 4 young adults (17-21); we stayed 7 nights and it was great! When we arrived at Villa Mirador, we were blown away! Villa Mirador is designed beautifully; the spaces open and bright and the view spectacular! We had lots of privacy and so enjoyed the sounds and sights of Costa Rica from the patio - the roosters, the birds, the surf and the howlers. We had everything we needed and the house was spotless. We had the pleasure of meeting Daniel one morning when he fixed our flat tire. Daniel is a very, very nice man. We had great days, great happy hours and great evenings. Most days we headed down the coast to check out the beaches - spending quite a few days at Guiones Beach. Beautiful! Our holiday was the perfect blend of family, relaxation and adventure. And

Villa Mirador and Mary Ellen's advice played a large part in that! You should go.

Complete Relaxation!

  • 5 of 5

Villa Mirador is a must see. The house, pool and grounds are all gorgeous. All is exactly as described, if not better. The layout of the house is perfect for multiple couples or more than one family. We stayed there with 2 couples and it was absolutely perfect. The bedrooms and bathrooms are comfortable and the kitchen is well stocked with everything you need.

Mary-Ellen, the owner, is wonderful to work with - the best homeowner I've worked with to date. She provided tons of information and is very responsive and helpful with all questions. Daniel, the onsite manager is very nice. We wish we would have been able to get to know him better, but we unfortunately don't speak Spanish.

The town of Samara is beautiful and we enjoyed exploring the beach and the town. We took a shuttle from the Liberia airport and then got a car in Samara - perfect for us. Our favorite activity was zip lining at Wing Nuts - amazing!! Our favorite restaurant was El Lagarto. The sushi is spectacular at La Vela Lantina. Playa Carrillo is also beautiful and we enjoyed the beach there too.

Villa Mirador and Samara are fabulous!! We highly recommend this house and the location.

Playa Samara is perfect place for beginner surfers and there are several good surfing schools. Playa Carrillo, just a 5-minute drive away, has absolutely perfect waves for body surfing, boogie boarding, and the chest-high water is super-warm. Rent boogie boards for $2/day, bicycles, horses, ATV's or kayaks. Go ocean kayaking to the tiny island of Isla Chora. Go snorkelling or diving. Or take yoga classes on the beach. Golf 9 holes at Punta Islita and then have lunch (a real treat), take the Palo Verde river cruise, or take a guided hike through the jungle with a botanical guide. There is literally something different to do every day!
