About Jim Singleton

Jeanne and I are from the mid west and spent many summers on Lake Erie. As we moved south, we never figured we would find a place that would equal the great lakes. When we found Smith Mountain Lake, we fell in love with it and decided to make it our home. The area is the friendliest place we've ever lived and the lake and surrounding mountains just adds to the pleasure. It's enjoyable to be here in all of the seasons and there's always something to do.

Jim Singleton purchased this chalet in 2004

Why Jim Singleton chose Moneta

This home is one of the few truly chalet style homes we were able to find here at the lake. We love the high ceilings and all the windows make it seem like you're sitting in the outdoors. The huge deck is a great feature because we enjoy sitting outside enjoying the serenity and views. It took a lot of effort to bring out it's potential and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

What makes this chalet unique

This home has always created a peaceful presence in our lives that is hard to describe. I think that it's a combination of having the lake and mountains right outside of your doorstep that brings out the best in this home. It's not the closest house to the lake and it doesn't have the big water views that some homes have but it's a home that creates a relaxing and comforting feeling that dream vacations are made of.

House on the Lake

  • 5 of 5

The house was in a great location right on a small cove. The dock was large and well maintained. It was a great place to stay for a few days, however, the beds were a little rough to sleep on but nothing out of the norm for a rental property. We all enjoyed our stay.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review. We just replaced some new mattresses this spring and apparently the queen Serta in the guest bedroom is too firm. We have already ordered a memory foam top for it! We're glad you enjoyed your stay and that you found all the local wineries to your liking. Have a great summer!

Great place to relax

  • 5 of 5

Thanks so much for renting us your beautiful home. It was clean, comfortable and very inviting. Our dog enjoyed some outdoor time on the huge gated deck, and we were able to catch some bluegill, bass and catfish in the cove. It was nice to be so close to grocery shopping and local restaurants, just a short drive away. We loved sitting on the deck amidst the trees, watching squirrels, deer and birds. Very relaxing. We will definitely rent from you in the future.

Thanks again Phil and Vicki

Great Vacation, not such a great house.

  • 2 of 5

The first impression we got of this house was when we first walked in was...it smelled of dog. Apparently this dog friendly house is VERY accomodating to dogs and the smell permeated throughout the home. We bought an extra deodorizer for the carpets to neutralize the smell. Despite that, the home is very spacious, is conveniently located near the main action of SML, and is complete in terms of the amenities that you would expect from a completely stocked home (full size washer and dryer and dishwasher were especially handy).

The actual placement of the house is another story. If you have older folks, be prepared for a mountain hike down to the dock and an unstable rocky path back up to the house at the end of the day. NOT recommended for anyone with disabilities or older people. If you enjoy mountain climbing, this is your kind of spot.

The dock is ok, a bit old (splintered), with no storage, and is not very well placed in the lake. The dock is at best in shallow water and actually located in muck (trim up, you must!). You really can't swim from the dock in this part of the lake. The dock is located at the end of a cove, off a cove, off of another cove from the main channel.

Despite all of that, we had a great time at SML. The kids enjoyed the lake, our boat and the state park where we found public docks much more appropriate for swimming and having a good time during the day.

Overall, this property was OK if you are spending the majority of your time outside the house. Finally, beware of the real estate sales pitch from the owner.

Owner's Response: "Thank you for opening your beautiful home to us. Our 4 children and we enjoyed the lake, swimming, tubing, diving off docks, boating, and so much more. Your home was comfortable and very warm and inviting. " This is a direct quote from our guest book signed by the family who wrote such a negative review. When our cleaning person arrived to begin cleaning for the next renters, she found the family still there, cooking lunch for the kids. This was 30 minutes past checkout. She was told they would be gone in about 10 minutes. Ninety minutes later, they checked out and cleaning could begin, but at this point, it became necessary to call in another person to help in order to finish in time for the next renters. As a result, they were charged $25 for the extra cleaning help. This house is kept in very good condition, carpets professionally cleaned regularly. I must wonder why a family without pets rented a pet friendly house. The dock is 8 years old, not splintered in any way, and recently stained. The lot is not flat, but pictures on the website clearly represent that. The owner is a real estate broker and is only there if someone asks to see property.

Great Vacation House

  • 5 of 5

We couldn't have been more happy when we saw our rental house. I was a little nervous renting without knowing what I was getting myself into to, but I was pleasantly surprised! The pictures on this site does not do the house justice. It is so much more than the pictures. It is really spacious and has everything you could need. You do need to bring all of your linens and extra pillows, but besides that the house has all you need. Getting to and from the dock/slip is a bit of a hike but you get use to it after a couple of times. It also has a deck for sunbathing. The deck on the house is a wrap around and really nice. We spent all of our nights there. You will love the house! It is also close to the stores.

The perfect place to stay on the lake!

  • 5 of 5

Words cannot describe how awesome this place was. The livingroom was huge with high vaulted ceilings and a gorgeous view. The sunroom just off the family room was really nice and cozy. The kitchen was updated and had all the amenities of home. The layout was perfect too. The master bedroom was large and comfortable. The master bathroom had been updated as well as the rest of the house. I loved the skylights and the cozy feel of this house. The downstairs was perfect for my teenage boys. My oldest slept in the bedroom downstairs, while my 13 year old slept on the pullout sofa. There was enough space for 9 people to sleep comfortably. I loved the large deck with all of the lounge chairs. The lot was nice during the day with shade from all the trees. The dock was amazing as well. My whole family was catching fish left and right off of plastic bait and live bait. The paddle boat was a favorite and the swimming was good there too. I really enjoyed swinging on the porch swing on the lower level. It was convienent to Westlake shopping and the movie theatre. We brought our own jet skis and was able to put them in the water easily from the ramp and docked them at the house dock all week. We loved the little pull up gas station on the lake with the little store. I think it was called Virginia Dare. We absolutley loved this home and the owner. He was so sweet and accomodating. He went out of his way to make us feel at home and was really laid back about the arrangements. I loved staying at the Catamaran at Westlake and would definitely rent from the Singletons again! One of the best rentals I've stayed in World Wide and very affordable!
