Why Vickie Shallcross chose Edisto Island

Edisto Island sits in the middle of the costal area of the 350,000 acre ACE basin- one of the largest intact costal ecosystems on the east coast. This protected area is home to many endangered and threatened species. Wildlife is abundant which was evident from this house we purchased in December, 2011. The design of the house brings the outdoors in and the large, high decks place you in the flight pattern of snowy egrets, ospreys, eagles, and more. If one desires to venture from the beauty and privacy of the house the ACE Basin National Refuge and Botany Bay Island are very close and provide multiple hiking and boating options in these protected settings.

What makes this house unique

Privacy, easy beach access, great shelling, non-motorized boating on site possible, crabbing and fishing on site, gournet kitchen, large outdoor living space with fantastic views of a lagoon, marshes and ocean. The many windows looking out over the lagoon provide constant viewing of the many different birds feeding. The marsh and surrounding land provide occasional views of deer feeding particularly during hunting seaon (safe territory.)

Our 4TH wedding anniversary vacation at Nature's Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We want to thank you Vickie for sharing Nature's Retreat with us. The house was everything that is was advertised to be and more. We had a wonderful week despite the weather being more frightful than delightful. The sun finally made an appearance on Friday. The beach provided us with some very unique treasures. That's one thing we love about the beach at Jeremy Cay. A daily treasure hunt. Also we enjoyed riding around Jeremy Cay in the golf cart enjoying the scenery.

The pelicans and cormorants amused us everyday in the lagoon. Friday morning we awoke to three doe across the lagoon looking right in the window at us. Nature did not disappoint. We are already looking forward to our 2016 visit. There is no place like Edisto and the peacefulness and solitude of Jeremy Cay.

We will absolutely recommend Nature's Retreat to our family and friends. We ate at the Waterfront Restaurant twice, it is a very good place to eat. The rest of the time we ate at the house so we wouldn't miss any of the great nature that Nature's Retreat has to offer. Vickie was very accommodating to us from the time we inquired about renting her lovely home along with e-mailing us during the week to see that everything was OK with our visit. She is very pleasant and easy to deal with.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review. It was great to hear the pelicans and cormorants are back! I have enjoyed watching them toy with each other over fish in the AM while having my cup of coffee. It seems seasonal which birds show up at any point in time and I have missed their activity when I have been there the last few times. Also I appreciate you mentioning other finds in Edisto such as the Waterfront Restaurant. This helps other renters who are unfamiliar with the area. It was a pleasure working with you during your stay. Thanks for being great renters! Vickie

Very special family time at Nature's Retreat Sept. 6-13, 2014

  • 5 of 5

When I rented this beautiful home for the second time I had no idea that it would be such a memorable vacation. As it turned out we had my father's funeral just one week prior to vacation. What a wonderful blessing it was to spend beach time with my siblings, our son and family, as well as a friend and my niece. My brother and his wife camped at the state park coming over for meals and family time. Whether fishing in the inlets and surf, walking on the beach, looking for sharks' teeth and shells, riding on golf carts or just enjoying the home and wonderful porches we loved every minute. Seeing the snowy egrets roosting in the trees at one of the lagoons was priceless. Each evening we would watch from the main porch as they flew in one by one to take their roosting spot. Our souls were soothed by the ocean breezes, the sights and sounds of the ocean, and enjoying God's creation together. We look forward to spending another wonderful vacation at Nature's Retreat sometime in the future. Thank you, Vickie, for sharing your lovely home with us once again.

Owner's Response: I am so glad you were able to experience one of my favorite times at the house - sunset when the snowy egrets fly in, one by one, to roost in the next door lagoon. This, coupled with the colorful fall sunsets, fills me with the wonders and beauty of God's creation for us. May the closeness and joy of your family time together linger with you until you can return. Thanks for sharing.

Reunion

  • 5 of 5

I have rented a number of houses through vrbo and this is one of the best. The house had wonderful views of the marshland and ocean. It was secluded and private. The kitchen was equipped exceptionally well. Would not hesitate to rent again in the future.

Family vacation

  • 5 of 5

Our family was blessed to spend a week at this amazing house! So many porches...so little time! View the amazing sunrise each morning from one spectacular porch overlooking the lagoon and seashore, relax on another porch in the hammock with a lovely view of the lagoon and all kinds of amazing birds, grill out on another porch and enjoy dinner while watching the sunset! Then, sit out on yet Another porch after dinner with the entire family and enjoy the evening breeze, moon and stars! Heavenly! Not to forget a small porch with an old fashioned wooden swing, my son-in-law used for his office each day. Poor guy had to work, but loved this venue! We would return to 18 Planters Retreat in a Heartbeat!!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for taking the time to write and submit such a nice review. Boy, you really made good use of the porches! A previous renter suggested rocking chairs for the porch and I will try and find some heavy ones that will handle the winds which can be heavy. I suspect that would have made your porch sitting even more relaxing! Thanks again - we are very pleased you enjoyed your stay.

Sherry & Will

It's vacation time again & after looking for this years destination, it brings back wonderful memories to this beautiful place that we stayed last year. There is not much comparison when looking for the ideal place to vacation. Jeremy Cay was by far, the best vacation ever! We were able to see all kinds of wildlife each day and got the opportunity to see the logger head turtles hatching and making their way to the ocean. The short walk to the beach was scenic & beautiful. The shells that you are able to collect are the most impressive and stunning. I have not seen shells of that size in years! The beach is so private and the locals there are so friendly. Vicki was absolutely accommodating in every way imaginable. The information that she sent to us prior to arriving was most helpful. All of the rooms were beautifully designed and decorated and the deck space on each level was very spacious. We were able to catch some big fish from the property. If you enjoy wildlife, then Jeremy Cay is the place to retreat! We saw osprey, rabbits, crabs, herons, but best of all, the hatching of the logger heads. I would recommend anyone who wants to enjoy spacious living accommodations, peaceful surroundings and beautiful scenery to Jeremy Cay. Thank you Vicki for letting us have the opportunity to enjoy your home last year!!

Owner's Response: Wow, how kind of you to take the time to respond a year later. I hope the house provides lasting memories for everyone. The house has been updated since last spring so it looks different on vrbo. There are new windows, siding, and paint so the house looks much fresher and cleaner all around. The house has basically been rebuilt and should be trouble free for my renters to just enjoy every moment with friends and/or family. Thanks

Stunning!

  • 5 of 5

I thoroughly enjoyed this rental property. We had a bit of a rainy week, so spent some time, there, too. The views from every room are stunning. It is peaceful and quiet. The house is well maintained, clean, comfortable and the kitchen has all that you would need to cook, which we did every night. Vickie was friendly and quickly responsive. I would definitely recommend and will rent again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to make this review. It is the views that make the house so special for us because even when inside, sunny or rainy weather, you can enjoy the activity in nature around the home.
