We're a husband and wife Team, one who works in Banking, the other who consults in Banking. The mountains and the outdoors have always been an important part of our lives. In year's past, we've actively hiked, mountain biked, and enjoyed white water. The mountains have always called to us, and we've always sought to share what we love. Now with 4 kids (one still at home) and 6 grandchildren, the importance of combining family and adventure is important to us. We built this home to eventually retire to, so we built it high end and handicap friendly.
Susan Hunnicutt purchased this cabin in 2008
Being a graduate of Appalachian State University and spending a lot of years skiing and enjoying the outdoors, the male part of the team was immediately drawn to the Boone Blowing Rock area. The female part of the team saw nothing but two small towns with a limited amount to do and to experience. To her, the Asheville area presented a wealth of different experiences. In year's past, the couple had spent many hours hiking, and rafting in and around the Asheville. The memories of the many small mountain towns, the festivals, and recreational activities soon drove the decision in the right direction. Upon exiting the car after viewing many lots in and around the area, the sound of the babbling creek at the back of the lot is what made the decision. It was a great decision.
Serenity and peace. Accessibility and 'self-contained' adventure. The Preserve is a gated acreage home site which borders the Pisgah National Forest. There are hiking trails, streams, and water falls in the preserve. There is an abundance of nature. We have seen bears, turkeys, rabbits, deer, raccoons and skunks. This is all possible because there is NO HUNTING! You are just minutes from Black Mountain, Asheville, Hendersonville, Lake Lure and Chimney Rock. There are a large number of crafts show and 'events' happening all the time.
Thanks for asking Susan, we made it home fine. We sincerely enjoyed our week in your beautiful home. We ended up bringing my 76 year old mother instead of my daughter and her family, as they decided to move to Portland. My mother had never seen anything so beautiful and thoroughly enjoyed sitting on the deck reading all day. You had a book there that she picked up on Sunday and didn’t put down till she finished it late Monday. It rained all day on the first day so we didn’t get out, but there was so much in the home to do (or not to do, which was sooo relaxing). My 30 year old son found a jigsaw puzzle and started working it Sunday afternoon and had it finished (with minimal help from the rest of us) by Tuesday night (all 1000 pieces ARE there too).
Thank you again for letting us use your home for the week. There was no detail overlooked and my 18 month old granddaughter really enjoyed all the things to play with in the little girls room. You may want to add a photo of that room to the listing as it was totally unexpected, but what a nice surprise.
This property is everything it is represented to be and so much more. We arrived from Florida, Ohio, DC, Chapel Hill and Germany to a warm and inviting Lodge. The HunniHome Lodge is equipped with everything you can think of to enjoy time in the mountains with family and friends. Whether it was enjoying a hot cup of coffee rocking on the back porch overlooking the mountains or sitting comfortably in front of the warm fireplace, this was a great setting to ring in the New Year.
It is especially nice to have such easy access to local attractions like Asheville, NC (microbrew capital of the East) and Black Mountain where the people are so friendly. We were able to enjoy plenty of nice hiking including just walking the roads within the Preserve after dark. We saw deer and turkey and despite keeping an open eye, did not come across any bears.
The accommodations were really nice for our group of 9 adults. There is plenty of flexibility for sleeping in the upstairs game room or by taking the twin mattresses into the cinema room. Every room is comfortably decorated leaving guests with a real feel for the mountains. The house is well supplied with puzzles, games and books if all you want to do is kick back and relax.
The Lodge owners were so responsive to our needs. Always available to answer questions and make sure that our stay in their home was comfortable. We were fortunate to be able to spend a week in their home and to ring in the New Year in such a beautiful and relaxing setting.
Thank you for sharing your little piece of serenity.
Steve and Barbara from South Florida
We loaded the car with gifts and met our Southern Florida family at the halfway point, each doing a ten hour drive. We had the best time ever! This welcoming lodge is stupendous by all accounts! They welcomed us with a bottle of wine and popcorn tin goodies which delighted us after a long car ride. This lodge has everything imaginable! Each night we watched a family movie leading up to Christmas night, roasted marshmallows, and sat by the fire. There is plenty of space for the kids to play with an additional wii area and gameroom upstairs. We brought a large santa puzzle and finished it at the bar room area table. They even had a decorated Christmas tree up! The amenities were so appreciated! You couldn't ask for more, we have used VRBO for several years now and this place tops the list by far!!! If you are in to getting away to the peace and quite of the mountains but still want the charm this is the place for you! Our grandaughter picked out the girl bedroom right away and it was an ideal for her complete with toys! We visited nearby Asheville, the Bltmore Estate,Black Mountain and hiked to see a waterfall.
We all had a wonderful time. There was plenty of room for everyone to sleep, and the house is very charming and well appointed. The bottle of wine for our arrival was a very nice touch. The deck was so nice to hang out on as well since there was enough seating for everyone. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a mountain getaway.
The cabin is amazing (as advertised). You can feel the love the Owners put into their house. From the welcome gift to the theater room you could feel it. Our family enjoyed the peace of the house and surroundings. Thank you again for allow us to enjoy your space.
What an amazing home in a peaceful and serene setting. The house is undersold by the photographs, there is no detail missed by the owners. From the linens to the dishware and cutlery, even champagne flutes..... We didn't want for a thing. The house has a great family layout. Perfect all around. We had a wonderful stay. Thank you for sharing your home.
We stayed in this beautiful mountain home with our parents for five days while showing them the beauty of the Asheville area and mountains. It was so inviting and comfortable and the owners have gone out of their way to make everything perfect for guests. Having the master bedroom on the main floor made it easy for my older parents to get around and we all really enjoyed using the home theatre. It was just like being at the movies! The mild November weather allowed us to take advantage of the wonderful deep covered deck each morning to enjoy our coffee and savor the valley view. The cabin is within easy reach of Black Mountain, Asheville and the surrounding areas but is also very private and feels like a real escape to the mountains...it was the best of both worlds.
We would definitely recommend it without reservation. It would be especially nice for large families or groups as it is very roomy, although we enjoyed it with just 4 of us as well.
The property is located in Catawba Falls Preserve, which is 7 miles to downtown Black Mountain.
