COZY LOG CABIN IN NORTHERN MINNESOTA WILDERNESS

Ely Cabin Rental Photos and Description

Cabin, 1 Bedroom + Loft, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

Mallard is a great log cabin for singles, one couple, or a small family. The beautiful screened-in back porch is a great place to relax, read or work a jig-saw puzzle. After using the gas grill, eat your dinner on the porch while viewing the deer and other wildlife in the Northwoods. When it is cool, the beautiful gas fireplace make this cabin very cozy. Mallard is an ideal cabin for those who want the convenience of a full kitchen and bath without sacrificing the tranquility of the wilderness experience. The sleeping loft is great for the kids; comfortable queen bed for mom and dad after enjoying the wilderness together. Mallard is available May-October.

Mallard Log Cabin:

Mallard is a self-contained three-room cabin complete with its own modern kitchen, full bath with tub and shower, screened in back porch and gas fireplace. Although this land is very rugged Mallard was designed with the handicapped in mind....it is all on one level with wide 3 foot doorways. The 12 x 16 foot screened in back porch is placed in its own corner of the woods. Have your moring coffee here, watch the hummingbirds or work a jig saw puzzle. Mallard is part of a wilderness retreat that has 2 cabins available for rent. You will have your own private dock, small beach and swing and miles of wilderness surrounding you! It is located in Northern Minnesota a few miles west of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. It is like having a cabin on your campsite in the wilderness. Perfect for a get-away weekend, family vacation, or a girls get-together. Comfortable for 1-4. Mallard Log Cabin is available for rent May - October.

Wilderness Setting:

Mallard is set in a wilderness location, 20 miles from even a gas station. We have 20 acres of mature pine forest and 1300 feet of water frontage. We have several docks so each cabin has their own privacy. Mallard is located just 3 miles West of The Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Northern Minnesota. it is about 50 miles WEST of Ely down the Wilderness Echo Trail; it is about 40 miles EAST of Orr, Minnesota. Forget your worries as you relax on the back porch, gaze at the sunset, or listen to the loons. We have paddled the four miles up to Table Rock falls and never saw another canoe or boat. We are very secluded. It is like having a comfortable log cabin on your capsite in the wilderness. Come and enjoy the beauty and solitude of the BWCA Wilderness from the comfort of our log cabin! Canoes, rowboat, and life jackets are included with your rental of our log cabin.

Area attractions:

We have 20 acres of mature pine forest and 1300 feet of waterfront available for your use. Mallard is located on the Chain-of-Lakes part of the wild and scenic Vermilion River (Vermilion River Lake). The water is about a mile wide by us, and there is an 8 mile stretch for canoeing and boating. We are only a few miles from the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and voyageur national Park. There are numerous waterfalls and rapids within a few hours paddle of the retreat. You can hike our 2 miles of trails. There is another 100 miles of abandoned logging roads that offer addititional hiking and excellent mountain biking opportunities. Points of interest include: Table Rock Falls, Vermilion Falls, Vermilion River Gorge, Astrid Lake Trails, Lake Jeanette Trails, Echo Lake Trails and beach, Majestic bluffs, hidden lakes, waterfalls, berry patches and a canoe paddle to ancient Indian pictographs will lure you onto the water and into the wilderness.

Pete and Maggie Jung have been canoeing and vacationing in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness since they were in college in 1972. At first it was just the two of us, then our two sons, and now daughter-in-law and 2 grandchildren. When we first purchased the property in 1998, Maggie took care of Loon's Echo Wilderness Retreat in the summers. During the year she taught high school in science in Illinois until 2010 when she retired. Pete continues to work for Morgan Stanley doing investments for his clients. In 2010, they built thier dream log home on the property and continue to enjoy sharing Wildloon and Mallard with their guests.

The Owner purchased this cabin in 1998

We first visited Loon's Echo wilderness retreat in 1998 when both of our boys were in college. It was an empty nest fall trip (in response to an ad in the Chicago Tribune), that has turned into an adventure of a lifetime. We found this piece of wilderness that reminded us of the Boundary Waters Wilderness. It is like having a cabin on your capsite in the wilderness. Since Maggie retired in 2010, the Jungs built 'Sunset Ridge' where they stay while they rent out Wildloon and Mallard to others. Come enjoy the quiet of the wilderness from the comfort of our log cabin.

This cabin was originally part of a resort on Moose Lake north of Ely. It was moved to this beutiful pine forest overlooking the Vermilion River in 1993. The cabin was rebuilt then remodeled in 1999 to include the full kitchen and bath. We love this small cabin...it is a great place to sit on the screen-in back porch and read, watch the hummingbirds, or work a puzzle. Fish, Canoe, or hike. This is a true wilderness experience with all the comforts of home.

My wife and I spent an amazing month in Mallard. It was everything we could hope for in a Minnesota wilderness cabin. We highly recommend this cabin to those who love the North with everything this location has to offer: canoeing, excellent fishing, wildlife, hiking, bird watching, etc. plus being spoiled with a very well outfitted cabin.
