Overview

Hakalau House Rental Photos and Description

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, + studio (Sleeps 8-9)

Kick back on your breezy lanai after a hard day of island living as cruise ships make their evening rounds over the horizon and dinner roasts on the grill. This comfortable family home plus separate studio, sleeps eight on four beds and has a plush couch for a stowaway or new friend. There are three bedrooms in the main house to rent, and if you wish to add it for added privacy, there is a separate, furnished studio with its own kitchenette, full bath and covered view lanai that can be accessed from indoors.

Fruit trees on the property produce year-round avocados and bananas along with seasonal citrus and guava, plus pineapples. Enjoy all of the creature comforts you’ll need to feel at home – three flat screen televisions with cable/blue-ray/Netflix, WiFi, iHomes for your ipod/mp3 player, dishwasher, washer and dryer and beach toys including towels, chairs, body boards, snorkel gear and a cooler.

Old Honomu town is located 18 minutes north of Hilo and 15 minutes away from Honoli’i surf beach on the Big Island of Hawaii. Village shops are a two-minute walk into town, where you’ll find shave ice and fresh baked goods at Mr. Ed’s, gourmet lunch plates at the Woodshop Gallery and Café, grocery sundries at Jan’s Store and locally crafted gifts at a number of shops.

Just a short two mile drive to the amazing Akaka Falls. If you prefer an aerial view of nearby rivers and waterfalls head to Skyline Eco Tours and book a zipline adventure.

About Jamie Deyden, Reservation Agent

I'm an emergency physician, originally from Puerto Rico, who enjoys travel and island living.

Jamie Deyden, Reservation Agent purchased this house in 2007

Why Jamie Deyden, Reservation Agent chose Hakalau

Honomu is the quintessential plantation town, with beautiful ocean views, welcoming people and shops within walking distance.

What makes this house unique

My favorite Honomu activity is to bike up the cane roads, take in the Pacific on the downhills, and enjoy a local beer on my lanai.

Review of Akaka Falls Home, VRBO rental 392754

  • 3 of 5

We stayed in the 3 bedroom/2 bath side of this nicely located older home for 2 nights with 4 adults and a toddler. Although we had hoped to stay in an air conditioned condo, we couldn't find any such suitable properties in the Hilo area and therefore selected this house to rent. In contrast to other rental properties where we have stayed which seem sort of sterile, this seemed like a well-lived-in, slightly worn, home with many of the owner's items ready at hand, such as binoculars, mountain bikes, tools for picking bananas growing on the property, an ice chest, snorkeling equipment, and a very well-equipped kitchen. The large washer & dryer were really appreciated, especially with the baby. Although none of the tropical fruit was ripe, we did pick some delicious cherry tomatoes growing in the garden in front of the house. Unfortunately there were a three problems which caused us some inconvenience and delayed some of our sightseeing. First, upon arrival we noticed a shrill beeping sound caused by low batteries in the smoke alarms. Since no 9 V batteries were available, it took a couple of hours for the property manager to arrange for someone to come out and fix the problem. Second, when trying to barbeque some fresh fish, we learned that the gas grill was too corroded to work; the property manager subsequently notified the owner that it needs replacement. And finally, the Pack & Play crib the property manager arranged to have delivered from a baby furniture rental shop was broken, dirty, and unusable but was replaced the following day. Three other important things to note are the unusual shower fitting in the guest bathroom which took some time to figure out, the need to keep the front door closed in the evening to keep out mosquitoes, and that the 2 front bedrooms become quite warm during the day (even with the ceiling fans) and take some time to cool off in the evening. In contrast the master bedroom in the back of the house has excellent cross ventilation and remained quite cool. With all that said, much of our stay at this house was quite enjoyable and the gentle evening rains provided soothing background noise for a sound sleep on the comfy beds. We really appreciated the excellent location convenient to Hawaii Volcanoes Nat'l Park, Akaka Falls, the great zipline at Honomu, and the fantastic Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden. In addition the natural beauty of the yard around the house and the cute village of Honomu were a real delight.

Perfect place to stay and relax

  • 5 of 5

This gorgeous home was exactly was my husband and parents were looking for our vacation. It was extremely clean and ready for us upon arrival. The house was stocked with clean towels and misc supplies throughout the house. It was within walking distance from a small quaint town and only about 10-15 minute drive from city of Hilo. The only downside was that there was no air conditioning and upon arrival it was a little warm. It does cool down a lot at night so it was no uncomfortable when you would go to sleep. I would absolutely recommend staying here and we will be back! Thank you to the owner and property managers!

Loved the Place!

  • 5 of 5

Four seniors, a couple and 2 single friends were very comfortable in this home. We enjoyed cooking in the great kitchen (that even had a salad spinner) after spending 8 days in Kona where we ate out the whole time. Not a difficult drive to Hilo and to all areas of the windward side of the Big Island. Loved picking the fruit in the yard for our morning smoothie!

Comfortable and well stocked house

  • 5 of 5

Four of us thoroughly enjoyed this spacious, clean, well situated home.

It is in a quiet neighborhood, off the highway, but within walking distance of a small town with a coffee shop, cafe, small convenience store, post office, tourist stores, bakery. Hilo is not far, nor are several fine drives to beaches.

The house has every appliance one could wish for and new kitchen ware. A few of the towels and sheets should be replaced.

Akaka Falls VRBO

This is a great home to stay at if you're attending Merrie Monarch. It's 15-20 minutes to Hilo town (or Imiloa for the cultural events that go on there) and just another 5-10 minutes to the Edith

Kanakaole Stadium and the wonderful craft fairs throughout town and the hotels. The oceanview from the lanai is so beautiful regardless of whether it rains or not you can't help but absorb all the different moods that weather changes reflect; not to say the least about the early morning sunrise off the ocean and the various cloud formations that help your imagination run rampant.

The house was comfortable for four adults and one keiki. We also took up the studio next door with a last minute adult add-on. Both homes were just nice and comfortable. Being near Aka ka Falls in the early morning hours as the sun begins to rise you catch the rain the comes down from the mountains...quite refreshing . All in all it was a great place to stay and we all had a wonderful time.

Relaxing retreat

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had been traveling through the tourist "must see" sights on the Big Island and after a few weeks took a much needed time out at this home in Honomu. What a pleasant surprise! We cooked most meals in the very well equipped kitchen and were able to pick oranges, limes and avocados right from the property. The lanai was perfect for relaxing and watching the skyline over the ocean. We found the location of the property perfect for day trips into the Hilo and Puna districts and it's over all tranquility absolutely rejuvenating!
