Do not rent this house!!

  • 1 of 5
Left the house yesterday after a 3 night stay. In addition to the dirty conditions at the house - mainly the pool area, which I will detail, the owner just called me looking for something. In the middle of speaking, he hung up on me on purpose. When I called him back - he told me "you are a (bad word) - don't ever call me again".

The house is old Florida style, so I did not expect it to be brand new, but I did expect it to be maintained. The worst part of the stay was the pool and deck. It was absolutely filthy and the wall areas around the pool were covered in algae/mold. I was afraid to clean this as, it would have just fallen in the pool and there was alot. The deck was badly in need of paint and repair. I have pictures so - the owner can refute all he wants. I spent the first morning of our stay sweeping the dirt and leaves off the deck for about 90 minutes. What I could not fix was the pool. It was very disconcerting to be swimming around staring at the mold/algae. It needed powerwashed and repaired - deck and pool surround needed painted. Also, the doorknob outside from the pool to inside was broken, so you had no doorknob. The yard is not maintained either.

Additionally - here are some other items we encountered: Hall bathroom tub full of hair, no pool towels, linen closet in disarray, one bedroom closet had about 7 nails pointed outward from the wall, spider webs with spiders in closet, one room the door was off the hinges, filthy garage, the immediate adjacent 2 houses next door completely abandoned, and as other reviewers noted, filth under beds and furniture. Also - the TV package did not include ESPN. A big deal if you like to enjoy sports on your vacay. Finally, there is a note that greets you when you enter the house, it basically says "welcome to the house, blah blah" - we will have you arrested if you do anything. Not exactly the welcome packet I have encountered at other properties.

I am not new to VRBO - for several years now have been renting I rent 2-3 houses a year using the service. You always encounter things here and there - but this was bad. The phone call really topped it off! I am a good renter and have never had a single dollar of a deposit withheld.

The view from the dock is beautiful however, there were zero fish - as reported by other reviewers.

Owner's Response: I submitted several answers to this unfair review and my responses were rejected by VRBO. So I will not respond to this inaccurate and untrue review.

A great getaway

This is a wonderful house. We enjoyed it tremendously. The heated pool was relaxing and very private. We tended to eat out most of the time but kitchen is well equipped with latest appliances

Good house, fair service

  • 3 of 5
We were renting this house Dec 29, 2013-Jan 5, 2014. When we came, the house was not prepared for living, it was not cleaned. The owner lives in close neighborhood, so when we called him, he showed up in no time saying that he confused the dates. He asked us to wait for some time until the house is cleaned. Indeed, they cleaned the house in 1 hour and 30 minutes, and we had to wait. But the cleaning was pretty bad. There were leftovers in the refrigerator (onion) and smell, they rushed to wash the floor, so the floor was far from being really washed. They also spayed some flavor in the house, so it smelled like a flower in the closet since there was lots of dust on the floor. We have a small child, so we needed to move a bed closer to the walls. When we moved the bed, we discovered hills of dust under the bed (it looks like the floor under the beds is never cleaned). So we cleaned the house again, because we didn't want to wait for another cleaning from the owner. Don't forget that we paid 150$ for the cleaning.

When we were leaving, we asked the owner for several additional hours, since we lost 1.5 hours when arriving. However, the owner didn't allow that arguing that he awaits for new guests who will spend 3 months in the property, so they are more important to him. The calendar however was empty for this day, so he said that the new guests had called him just a day ago and he hadn't had time to update the calendar. Later, he wrote an e-mail saying that he grants a free day for our future visits as an excuse provided that we rent the house for at least a week. So instead of giving some part of our cash back, he really earns money.

However, overall, the house is great and the owner promptly responds to any issues we raise (like wireless password, buttons for the garage etc.).

So, mixed experience...

Owner's Response: The cleaning service that I used for over a year just didn't show up. Usually they have been reliable, even greeting Guests upon arrival. I only found out about their error when you arrived and called me. Me and my wife immediately went to the property and cleaned it, replacing bedding with brand new bedding because it was faster. We did the best we could in as fast as we are not Janitors.

If i rented your home I would not go in and start moving furniture around. In fact you moved furniture around in every room, leaving the house in disarray. We found all the rugs in the house thrown onto the garage floor. When furniture gets moved around it gets broken. We have had losses from people moving furniture around before. Please don't move furniture around in a vacation rental without permission. It's just wrong.

Chalk marks over 50% of the pool deck area required additional cleaning fees to power wash to get the child's chalk scribbling all throughout the deck area. So I doubt I made any money on that. The cleaning fees are for when you leave.

All I can say is the guy was mad because he didn't get his free "several hours". Simple.

We had the whole crew........Great Time!

  • 4 of 5
We rented the house for Christmas. 2 Adults, 6 kids--ages 10-20. Great location, it's close to Rt 41 (which means close to everything) on a short canal that goes straight to big water---very convenient for fisherman. Dock is nice and large and can accommodate pretty much any size boat you care to use. House is nicely appointed and handled our family perfectly.
Now for the downsides: This is an older property that is being upgraded. Starting with the Dock area, there are no working lights--plenty of wiring and lamps, but nothing worked (more on electrical later). There are 2 water spigots, but could not figure out how to get water down to them. We needed water there to wash off cleaning table from fishing (we used buckets). Dock decking needs replaced. When we fished off the dock the first day there were many nails whose heads had sucked up and created a hazard (not a big deal--hammer in my tool kit, 5 minutes). The pool/lanai is in average shape. There is one set of lights in the NE corner, not enough for the large pool area. It did look like owner is working on it. The house was not properly cleaned when we arrived. We emptied all the garbage cans when we were settling in (some were full) and my wife ran the sweeper thru all the rooms (she admits to being a clean freak when we are on the road--but this time she was right). Now, about the electrical, the owner needs to create a diagram for the lights and what switches do what. It is not intuitive, and some switches appeared to do nothing at all. Again there is evidence the owner is working on it--himself--but frankly the electrical system in parts of the house, the pool area/dock is a mess and could use the services of a trained electrician. The remote for the fan/light in the master bedroom worked part of the time, but really needs to be replaced.
Back to the positives, the living room worked great with our large family. The kitchen was very nice and was well used! (One small suggestion: Get some different plates---ceramic plate/bowls dropped on ceramic floor = no more ceramic plate/bowls). Gas grill was brand new with a full tank. Beds were comfortable and the neighborhood quiet. No problem sleeping!! The bathrooms are extremely nice---love the walk-in shower!
Overall, we very much enjoyed our stay. Fishing was off/on, (December, that's to be expected), but we caught mackerel, snapper, catfish, and a very nice sea trout. We rate this a 4/5

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review, let me clear up a few things, first the dock has a "sub panel" on the seawall next to the dock. Inside the sub panel, there are a series of breakers. Power to the dock lights and receptacles is available ONLY when the breaker is switched on. Additionally, there is a water valve that controls the dock water. A 6 second phone call to me would have answered the question, most of the guests were able to find it, I will add these to a list and post them on the property, thanks for the heads up.
Hurricaines tend to elevate the canal water level where the dock would be underwater, this causes the planks to warp and occasionally, nails will pop up. We do maintain them, but sometimes a few will pop up. The dock was inspected by a marine contractor and passed. All of my other properties have brand new concrete docks, perhaps you should book one of these next time.

I inspected the property prior to your arrival and because of your comments I have fired the cleaning lady. I don't tolerate that, I strive to make the properties clean and comfortable, thanks for letting me know.

Not sure what you saw in regards the switches, I did have a licensed electrician go through the home when we remodeled, and he also did the required inspections for insurance and all passed. Not sure what "evidence" you refer to, its totally out of line to put that in a review.

As for the Pool area lighting, the two halogen spot lights are very bright and illuminate the main area of the pool deck area. I have taken your advice and ordered the installation of an additional light. Thanks for the info!

Were not going to get different plates, we like real plates not plastic plates. The service for 8 sets are beautiful with matching large bowls and flat serving plates. I get compliments on them from almost every guest.

Beautiful home-NOT good fishing in the rainy season!

  • 4 of 5
The listing description was accurate.
The photos accurately reflect the rental’s appearance and amenities.
Property clean and well-maintained.
Owner helpful in answering our questions or concerns.
Nice big dock, much bigger than pic portrays!
If you want to fish however, do NOT go during the rainy season.
The bait shop and neighbors said other times fishing is great.
The water had overflow from the rivers, more brackish than salt water.
FISHING WAS HORRIBLE!!!
