Lived in this home for 36 years. Built by myself over an eight year period. Raised two children here with my wife using solar power and rustic living. Now, I have commercial electricity and way more comforts. This is real rural experience.
I rented this place on VRBO in the early 2000' years. Most of my guests back then were absolutely delighted with the place. This is a magical place.
I now live in Santa Barbara and work in the Real Estate business.
The Owner purchased this farmhouse in 1972
I inherited this property from my dad. Grew up in this canyon . This property is a place of power...it seems to promote healing in all aspects of life.
You will hear Great Horn owls as you fall off to sleep. The mother deer and her fawn will probably get in your way as you move around the property. The Mountain House is situated on an eighty acre parcel.
You will feel very far away from the crowd here.
The nearest neighbor is a half mile away.
Thank you again for letting us stay in your wonderful house. Again, I brought an ambitious book to read and never touched it, preferring to thumb through your amazing reading collection!
We washed the sheets we used in the master bedroom and put them back on the bed. We also washed all the towels we used except one and two kitchen rags. We left those on the floor in the master bedroom near the hamper. Thank you !!
I totally fell in love with this place! I had family in from the midwest and wanted to find a place for us all to stay that would highlight some of the natural beauty that Southern California has to offer. This property was perfect... Breathtaking ocean view from the front porch and hot tub, nice lawn area for the kids and dog to run around in, well-equipped kitchen for family meals, bumpy (but totally manageable and super scenic) drive down to Refugio State Beach, fresh flowers all over the house, and a gorgeous and fascinating collection of interior decor. Not to mention that the house itself is an architectural gem as well as very comfortable. Be advised that there are not any nearby convenience or grocery stores, but the drive is not so far from civilization that it prohibits leaving... not that you will want to. I will definitely be trying to make it back as soon as I can!
I hadn't been to Refugio Canyon (just north of Santa Barbara) in over 40 years, so returning for a few days of relaxation seemed like a great idea. I wasn't disappointed -- in fact, my wife and I had a marvelous time. As noted in other reviews, this home is well off the beaten path; however, therein lies it's appeal. The weather was amazing, the landscape spectacular, and the peace and quiet of the surrounding hills was a welcome change from Los Angeles. This is a rare and beautiful retreat, and the owner (Stewart Abercrombie) has generously made it available for travelers both young and old. If you have a few days to spare, and would like to slow down and relive a bygone era of early California, this is the place for you!
This is a lovely, rustic but very comfortable, secluded home on acres of wild land. Gorgeous ocean views, hiking, peace and serenity. It's remote but not too far away. Our group had such an idyllic time here. Bedrooms are roomy and comfortable and the living room and patio are great hang out places. We will definitely be back.
We stayed for two nights and found the place to be serene and secluded which is exactly what we wanted. The drive in and out was a bit bumpy but still manageable in a regular car and the tree canopies over Refugio Road were stunning. Wouldn't want to try driving there in the rain though. We enjoyed the front porch with its spectacular view the most. Barbecued steaks and had a small fire on the patio while listening to the wind blow through the huge oak trees. Bocci ball, hot tub, walks, reading, togetherness. Beds were comfy. The house is built extremely well and remained a very comfortable temperature throughout the day and night. It was a great retreat close enough for our day trips to Solvang and Goleta. Thanks for being so helpful Stuart. We did finally see the horses as we left.
What a beautiful Home. The wood work inside is amazing! The house is large, but cozy and the fireplace is huge. You can see the owner put a lot of love and detail into this property. We loved the seclusion, views, the hikes and just sitting on the patio soaking in the serenity. Anywhere you walk on this property, you have a fabulous view. This place is absolutely stunning! The owner is a super guy. We had a chance to meet him and ask him questions about building this fabulous home. Thank you very much! We will be returning. Hopefully soon.
