Photos and Description of the Garfield Bay vacation lodge rental
Lodge, 5 Bedrooms + Loft + Den, 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 10-14)

Park in the large lot in the forest, walk across the pedestrian bridge, and enter the over 4000 square foot house on the top, loft level. When you open the door you’ll gaze out through the 22 foot high and 30 foot wide bank of picture windows to a spectacular view of Lake Pend Oreille and the majestic Cabinet Mountains. On this level are a large loft, standard bedroom, bathroom, and the Guest Master Bedroom. The Guest Master Bedroom is spacious with double doors to its own outside deck sitting high above the lake with a breathtaking vantage point for the lake below and the mountains beyond. This bedroom has a king sized bed and wet bar with sink, beverage refrigerator, and microwave oven. The standard bedroom has a queen sized bed. All bathrooms in the house have granite countertops and slate floors.

Down the stairs from the loft is the main living area with a Great Room with living, dining, and kitchen areas. The Great Room has a 22 foot vaulted ceiling with windows from floor to ceiling and wall to wall offering spectacular views of the lake, mountains, and frequent eagles and ospreys. The Great Room has a gas fireplace, big screen TV, and rustic wood floors. At night you can lay on either of the two couches and look up at the star filled Idaho sky.

Notice the reclaimed wood beams from the Farragut Naval Training Center in Bayview on the south end of the lake where over 300,000 sailors were trained during World War II, and the handrail posts from a sawmill in Priest River on the other end of the lake.

The Dining area and Kitchen connect to the living area and have the same views. The Kitchen and breakfast bar have granite countertops, and the Kitchen has a large refrigerator-freezer, double ovens, a microwave, ceramic stove top, double drawer, pull-out dishwasher, garbage compactor, hickory cabinets, and a walk-in pantry. The Powder Room off of dining area is a convenient rest stop when relaxing or entertaining in the Great Room.

The Master Bedroom Suite is also on the main living level and has a king sized bed with view of the lake, double doors opening to the main deck, a bathroom with granite countertops, a granite topped vanity, and a large walk in closet with dresser.

The main deck is nearly 1000 square feet in size and is accessed from double doors of off either the Master Bedroom Suite or the Great Room. The deck has a propane barbeque, outdoor table, chairs, and loungers. The Laundry Room with front loading Maytag washer and dryer connects to Master Bedroom Suite closet and has a laundry chute from the Guest Master Bedroom above.

Down the stairs on the next level there are two large bedrooms with built in dressers and queen sized beds (one standard mattress and one air bed), a bathroom, a Recreation Room, and a Media Room. This level also has double doors opening onto its own deck. The Rec Room has a large bar topped with the same rustic flooring as the Great Room and having a sink with garbage disposal, dishwasher, ice machine, beverage refrigerator, and kegerator (unstocked). The Rec Room also has an 8 foot pool table. The Rec Room has 4 picture windows, so you’re never without a view. The Media Room has a 62 inch TV, stereo system, and adjustable lighting for perfect viewing. Limited book, magazine, CD, and movie selections are provided. The sectional couch in the Media Room contains a double sized hide-a-bed. There is also an extra, double sized air bed that can be used in the many open areas from the loft to the outside decks (very fun).

The shoreline is accessed by stairs from the Rec Room. At the shoreline is a large dock with mooring whips and a manual Shore Station boat lift. The boat lift is suitable for “ski” boat sized boats. It easily accommodates the owner’s 20.5 foot, 2500 pound, in-board/out-board boat. A boat is not provided, but you are welcome to use the lift. The mooring whips can accommodate much larger boats, and there is also a mooring buoy for larger boats or sailboats with keels. A Nordik, 'Zodiac' type, rubber raft with oars is provided and makes an excellent dingy for accessing boats moored on the buoy or just playing in the lake.

The private shoreline is 200 feet in length, 100 feet of which is developed. There is a screen covered fire pit and a 7’ x 7’ x 7’ shed with a refrigerator and port-a-potty. Outdoor chairs and tables and firewood are also provided. There are excellent wading and swimming areas with lake gravel bottoms and a ladder from the lake onto the dock. Fishing off of the dock is very good, primarily for small mouth bass and perch.

The loft level of the house sits 80 feet above the lake. This creates awe inspiring views. It is common to look down at the top of the head of a bald eagle as it flies by or fishes, and these eagles often sit in trees just off of the deck levels. However, this elevation change also requires stairs both within the house and to access the lake. The staircase from the lake to the house climbs 50 feet. Going down is easy, but the landings and rest areas are often welcome on the way up. Guests are cautioned that stairs are an integral part of this property.

About Jan Taylor

We are both from northwestern Montana; Jan is 4th generation and Bill 3rd. We were both raised with lake places on big lakes and both of our parents lived in year-round homes on Flathead Lake. So this is where our hearts are. We currently reside in Las Vegas Nevada, where Bill is a civil engineer. Jan has retired and loves to cook, play with the grandboys, and socialize with friends. We both love to entertain and both of our homes are designed to do just that. Jan designed the kitchen at the Lake so she can prepare meals and treats and still be a part of the crowd and enjoy the view. Although set up for gourmet cooking, Jan designed the kitchen to be understated enough that guests are not expecting gourmet cooking for every meal.

Jan Taylor purchased this lodge in 2006
Why Jan Taylor chose Garfield Bay

Just prior to our wedding in 1974, Bill was assigned to a project to design foundations for the “new” Long Bridge on U.S. 95 south of Sandpoint. This work involved driving and load testing “test piles” along the alignment of the present Long Bridge, and we lived in a condominium along the edge of the Lake for a couple of months. We loved Sandpoint and the people, as it took us back to our memories of NW Montana when that area was a little smaller and more intimate. In a relatively short period of time people were greeting us in the stores and asking us about the project. We told each other that this was a place to which we’d love to return.

During our frequent trips back to the Flathead Valley and Missoula areas of NW Montana to visit family and friends, we discovered it much more convenient and less costly to fly into Spokane, rent a car, and drive over. As we drove back and forth, we remembered how much we enjoyed Northern Idaho. This, together with the fact that it was so easily accessible that we could make “weekend” trips, prompted us to look around for a place to settle.

We looked around Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene for over two years and finally decided on Lake Pend Oreille. Sandpoint had grown up a bit since 1974. It still had that intimate feel of home, but now had excellent restaurants, boutique shops, and events and attractions.

The Lake has a lot of convenient services, including towns, hospitals, boat launches, marinas, restaurants, bars, parks, and open public lands. Yet, we also found that the size of the lake coupled with the large amount of publicly owned shoreline noticeably reduced the boating congestion and wave chop we’d seen on other area lakes during the busiest parts of summer. LPO has that perfect combination of civilization and seclusion that is just right for us.

What makes this lodge unique

The LPO area has every outdoor activity imaginable and all of them are world class. The Schweitzer Ski Resort is open year round. In the summer you can visit the shops and restaurants, ride a lift to the top of the mountain for vistas and hiking, and rent mountain bikes. Silverwood Amusement Park has multiple rides and entertainment for all ages, including coasters, thrill rides and a water park.

LPO has several towns on its shores. Sandpoint is the largest, then Bayview, Hope, Clark Fork, and a couple even smaller. Sandpoint has restaurants and shops ranging from local crafts, to antique, to the big chains. Sandpoint is home to Cold Water Creek with their flagship store on the main drag. City Beach is one of the best city parks you’ll ever find and a great place for children. You can boat to City Beach and park at the City’s marina, or you can drive. From City Beach you can walk into downtown. The Sandpoint Festival lasts over a week and draws crowds from all over the northwest. Sandpoint also has wooden boat shows, live theater, antique car rallies, mountain bike races, and other events throughout the summer.

Nearby the house there are 3 marinas in Hope, 1 in Garfield Bay, and 1 in Bottle Bay. These marinas all have gas and have 5 restaurants, bars, and other services. There are two nice restaurants in Hope which also have bars and a restaurant and two bars in Garfield Bay. Our favorite boating destination is the Beyond Hope Resort. By boat, Hope is a little more than 10 minutes and Garfield Bay and Beyond Hope a little less; Bottle Bay is a half hour. By car, Hope is 40 minutes and Garfield and Bottle Bays 10 minutes, and Beyond Hope more than an hour.

Charter fishing services will pick you up and drop you off at our dock. LPO is famous for large rainbow trout (Kamloops) and lake trout (mackinaw), and you can also catch bull and cut-throat trout, kokanee salmon, small mouth bass, whitefish, and perch.

Our recent stay at your property was truly enjoyable and relaxing, I may have mentioned to you before that this was our fourth year coming to the Sandpoint area, I must say that your home by far exceeded anything we had rented before, not only in how clean the home was but how well equipped it was, I cannot think of any thing your home was missing to make our vacation one of our most remembered stays . I would just like to take this time to let you know that I would highly reccomend your home to anyone that is looking for a truly a10 out of 10 rating,in that I mean I would definatly rent your home again Thanks again

My family and I stayed a week in August . It was Heaven! The house is awesome. My favorite was the pool room with a beautiful bar overlooking the lake. The view is amazing. Sitting on the top deck having cocktails watching the eagles fly across the lake looking for fish. Every morning the kids and would fish off of the dock getting bites every 5 minutes! I never knew where I wanted to retire but now I do. The many marinas on the lake that offer great food and activities. There are many nice houses on this lake but this one takes the cake. I will be coming back year after year.

I have had the pleasure of staying at this place twice with great friends! I've never stayed at a place and said WOW so many times! The accommodations were over the top from the comfortable beds (we never wanted to get out of) to the breath taking views you can never get enough of! We loved being able to play pool and watch movies on a large tv or read a book on the large deck or fish off the dock or just do nothing at all and soak up the peaceful serenity around us! Thank you for letting us be able to have such a wonderful experience
