Garfield Bay Lodge Rental Photos and Description

Lodge, 5 Bedrooms + Loft + Den, 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 10-14)

Park in the large lot in the forest, walk across the pedestrian bridge, and enter the over 4000 square foot house on the top, loft level. When you open the door you’ll gaze out through the 22 foot high and 30 foot wide bank of picture windows to a spectacular view of Lake Pend Oreille and the majestic Cabinet Mountains. On this level are a large loft, standard bedroom, bathroom, and the Guest Master Bedroom. The Guest Master Bedroom is spacious with double doors to its own outside deck sitting high above the lake with a breathtaking vantage point for the lake below and the mountains beyond. This bedroom has a king sized bed and wet bar with sink, beverage refrigerator, and microwave oven. The standard bedroom has a queen sized bed. All bathrooms in the house have granite countertops and slate floors.

Down the stairs from the loft is the main living area with a Great Room with living, dining, and kitchen areas. The Great Room has a 22 foot vaulted ceiling with windows from floor to ceiling and wall to wall offering spectacular views of the lake, mountains, and frequent eagles and ospreys. The Great Room has a gas fireplace, big screen TV, and rustic wood floors. At night you can lay on either of the two couches and look up at the star filled Idaho sky.

Notice the reclaimed wood beams from the Farragut Naval Training Center in Bayview on the south end of the lake where over 300,000 sailors were trained during World War II, and the handrail posts from a sawmill in Priest River on the other end of the lake.

The Dining area and Kitchen connect to the living area and have the same views. The Kitchen and breakfast bar have granite countertops, and the Kitchen has a large refrigerator-freezer, double ovens, a microwave, ceramic stove top, double drawer, pull-out dishwasher, garbage compactor, hickory cabinets, and a walk-in pantry. The Powder Room off of dining area is a convenient rest stop when relaxing or entertaining in the Great Room.

The Master Bedroom Suite is also on the main living level and has a king sized bed with view of the lake, double doors opening to the main deck, a bathroom with granite countertops, a granite topped vanity, and a large walk in closet with dresser.

The main deck is nearly 1000 square feet in size and is accessed from double doors of off either the Master Bedroom Suite or the Great Room. The deck has a propane barbeque, outdoor table, chairs, and loungers. The Laundry Room with front loading Maytag washer and dryer connects to Master Bedroom Suite closet and has a laundry chute from the Guest Master Bedroom above.

Down the stairs on the next level there are two large bedrooms with built in dressers and queen sized beds (one standard mattress and one air bed), a bathroom, a Recreation Room, and a Media Room. This level also has double doors opening onto its own deck. The Rec Room has a large bar topped with the same rustic flooring as the Great Room and having a sink with garbage disposal, dishwasher, ice machine, beverage refrigerator, and kegerator (unstocked). The Rec Room also has an 8 foot pool table and a shuffleboard table. The Rec Room has 4 picture windows, so you’re never without a view. The Media Room has a big screen TV, stereo system, and adjustable lighting for perfect viewing. Limited book, magazine, CD, and movie selections are provided. The sectional couch in the Media Room contains a double sized hide-a-bed. There is also an extra, double sized air bed that can be used in the many open areas from the loft to the outside decks (very fun).

The shoreline is accessed by stairs from the Rec Room. At the shoreline is a large 'L' shaped dock. The old, manual boat lift shown in many of the photos has been replaced with a covered, electric, 6000 pound capacity boat lift capable of accommodating boats up to 8-1/2 feet in width. A boat is not provided, but you are welcome to use the lift. The mooring whips shown in many of the photos broke in several large storms and are no longer available. The dock has heavy duty cleats for tying up as many as 3 boats or watercraft, but it is not recommended that boats be left overnight or unattended during stormy weather. Although the bay is sheltered from many of the storms, violent storms do occur. There is a mooring buoy for larger boats or sailboats with keels. A Nordik, 'Zodiac' type, rubber raft with oars is provided and makes an excellent dingy for accessing boats moored on the buoy or just playing in the lake.

The private shoreline is 200 feet in length, 100 feet of which is developed. There is a screen covered fire pit and a 7’ x 7’ x 7’ shed with a refrigerator and port-a-potty. Outdoor chairs and tables and firewood are also provided. There are excellent wading and swimming areas with lake gravel bottoms and a ladder from the lake onto the dock. Fishing off of the dock is very good, primarily for small mouth bass and perch, although occasional lake and cutthroat trout have been caught.

The loft level of the house sits 80 feet above the lake. This creates awe inspiring views. It is common to look down at the top of the head of a bald eagle as it flies by or fishes, and these eagles often sit in trees just off of the deck levels. However, this elevation change also requires stairs both within the house and to access the lake. The staircase from the lake to the house climbs 50 feet. Going down is easy, but the landings and rest areas are often welcome on the way up. Guests are cautioned that stairs are an integral part of this property.

About Jan Taylor

We are both from northwestern Montana; Jan is 4th generation and Bill 3rd. We were both raised with lake places on big lakes and both of our parents lived in year-round homes on Flathead Lake. So this is where our hearts are. We currently reside in Las Vegas Nevada, where Bill is a civil engineer. Jan has retired and loves to cook, play with the grandboys, and socialize with friends. We both love to entertain and both of our homes are designed to do just that. Jan designed the kitchen at the Lake so she can prepare meals and treats and still be a part of the crowd and enjoy the view. Although set up for gourmet cooking, Jan designed the kitchen to be understated enough that guests are not expecting gourmet cooking for every meal.

Jan Taylor purchased this lodge in 2006

Why Jan Taylor chose Garfield Bay

Just prior to our wedding in 1974, Bill was assigned to a project to design foundations for the “new” Long Bridge on U.S. 95 south of Sandpoint. This work involved driving and load testing “test piles” along the alignment of the present Long Bridge, and we lived in a condominium along the edge of the Lake for a couple of months. We loved Sandpoint and the people, as it took us back to our memories of NW Montana when that area was a little smaller and more intimate. In a relatively short period of time people were greeting us in the stores and asking us about the project. We told each other that this was a place to which we’d love to return.

During our frequent trips back to the Flathead Valley and Missoula areas of NW Montana to visit family and friends, we discovered it much more convenient and less costly to fly into Spokane, rent a car, and drive over. As we drove back and forth, we remembered how much we enjoyed Northern Idaho. This, together with the fact that it was so easily accessible that we could make “weekend” trips, prompted us to look around for a place to settle.

We looked around Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene for over two years and finally decided on Lake Pend Oreille. Sandpoint had grown up a bit since 1974. It still had that intimate feel of home, but now had excellent restaurants, boutique shops, and events and attractions.

The Lake has a lot of convenient services, including towns, hospitals, boat launches, marinas, restaurants, bars, parks, and open public lands. Yet, we also found that the size of the lake coupled with the large amount of publicly owned shoreline noticeably reduced the boating congestion and wave chop we’d seen on other area lakes during the busiest parts of summer. LPO has that perfect combination of civilization and seclusion that is just right for us.

What makes this lodge unique

The LPO area has every outdoor activity imaginable and all of them are world class. The Schweitzer Ski Resort is open year round. In the summer you can visit the shops and restaurants, ride a lift to the top of the mountain for vistas and hiking, and rent mountain bikes. Silverwood Amusement Park has multiple rides and entertainment for all ages, including coasters, thrill rides, and a water park.

LPO has several towns on its shores. Sandpoint is the largest, then Bayview, Hope, Clark Fork, and a couple even smaller. Sandpoint has restaurants and shops ranging from local crafts, to antique, to the big chains. City Beach is one of the best city parks you’ll ever find and a great place for children. You can boat to City Beach and park at the City’s marina, or you can drive. From City Beach you can walk into downtown. The Sandpoint Festival lasts over a week and draws crowds from all over the northwest. Sandpoint also has wooden boat shows, live theater, antique car rallies, mountain bike races, and other events throughout the summer.

Nearby the house there are 3 marinas in Hope, 1 in Garfield Bay, and 1 in Bottle Bay. These marinas all have gas and have 5 restaurants, bars, and other services. There are two nice restaurants in Hope which also have bars and a restaurant and two bars in Garfield Bay. Our favorite boating destination is the Beyond Hope Resort. By boat, Hope is a little more than 10 minutes and Garfield Bay and Beyond Hope a little less; Bottle Bay is a half hour. By car, Hope is 40 minutes and Garfield and Bottle Bays 10 minutes, and Beyond Hope more than an hour.

Charter fishing services will pick you up and drop you off at our dock. LPO is famous for large rainbow trout (Kamloops) and lake trout (mackinaw), and you can also catch bull and cut-throat trout, kokanee salmon, small mouth bass, whitefish, and perch.

Spectacular Place

The view and house are both lovely. Our group enjoyed themselves thoroughly and completely. There was plenty of room to stretch out and immaculate and comfortable rooms for a large number of guests.

Peaceful vacation

  • 5 of 5

We were a family of 13 and we wanted for nothing at this property. The owners have taken into consideration every detail right down to a beverage fridge on the beach. The layout was very practical and the house had everything. The owners have an associate right close with a welcoming package and they were quick to cone over when we had questions about anything. The owners have spent hours putting togethera rental manual that literally answers anything you want to know about the property. They were professional and courteous and simply a pleasure to deal with.

Perfect Week At The Lake

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time in this terrific home on Lake Pend Oreille. The house was large enough for our extended family of 9. The kitchen table expands to a large square which can seat up to 12, so it is great for large family meals as well as large family card games. The house is well funished and comfortable for a large group.

The views from this home are almost unbelievable. The house is situated on the mountainside well above the lake, and has several large windows facing the water. Soaring bald eagles were a regular site immediately outside the family room window.

The kitchen is large and is well equipped. Everthing you need to prepare meals can easily be found. There is also a large supply of various spices on hand so no need to pack your own.

The lower level of the house was a big hit. The high capacity ice maker in the built in bar was excellent for re-supplying the boat cooler each day. The pool table and bar shuffleboard tables were both big hits. Everyone enjoyed the nightly family tournaments.

The waterfront was very nice. The dock makes for a great swimming and fishing platform. The shed by the water is convenient for overnight storage, and also contains a mini-fridge for keeping beverages cold. The whip system works well for boat mooring, as does the manual boat lift.

The only word of caution I have to offer is with respect to the stairs. Because the house itself is 3 stories tall, and sits high above the water on the mountainside (which is why the view is so awesome) it requires several flights of stairs to get from the top floor of the house to the waterfront and back. For elderly folks or anyone with a disability, this may be a challenge. Otherwise, all in all, you really couldn't ask for much more. The house is great, the views are spectacular and the lake itself is second to none.

We would definatley stay here again!

Beautiful Luxury Home in a quiet bay of Lake Pend Oreille

  • 5 of 5

We are a Canadian Family who have rented luxury homes on many lakes over many years, including Kootenay Lake, Moyie Lake and Lake Coeur D'Alene. This home and our lake experience at Lake Pend Oreille, was truly second to none. A luxury home on a quiet bay of the lake, only 30 minutes from Sandpoint. Once you arrive, you really don't ever want to leave! Everything from the design of the home, the beauty of the sweeping views, the comfort of the air conditioning (which we needed at over 90 degrees most days), the gourmet kitchen, the quiet waters of the bay perfect for paddling and skiing and fishing, the hummingbirds that visited us on the deck daily, the herb garden planted for our use, the private beach and dock, and the bald eagles soaring over us made us want to stay for another week. What impressed us too was the cleanliness of the home, and all of the amenities it had to offer us, right down to the large deck, the ice maker on the lower level, the pool table for the kids, and the shuffleboard for the guys. The wine left for us after a long day of travelling and settling in, and the basket of S'mores fixins from the friendly neighbour only added to our sense of being welcomed. The fishermen in our family also loved the lake level bait fridge. If you are looking for a luxury home on a quiet bay with owners who do their very best to ensure you enjoy a wonderful vacation look no more!! Everyone from my 76 year-old mom, my 44 year-old fisherman brother-in law, my 21 year-old niece to our 12 year-old daughter loved every minute!

Exactly what we were looking for - natural beauty, private location, fantastic house!

  • 5 of 5

We were searching for a vacation rental that was somewhat private, waterfront property. With four boys, we wanted easy access to the lake, as we were renting a boat for the duration of our vacation. The private dock was perfect and so convenient. The house was beautiful, and accommodated our family of 6 to a tee. We would definitely come back again! Jan was so helpful and really ensured everything was set to make our vacation worry free. :)
